Lately, I've been going to back to my (not so fulfilling) childhood, and playing all the games that defined that particular era of my life. And, I thought about it, did a quick Facepunch search, nothing came up about it in the General Games discussion, so I just thought I'd try and start a discussion (AKA a Gush-fest) about games from the past. NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis, Hell, even Colecovision, Vic-20, Atari 2600, anything equal to or before PS1. So, here comes my rants on my favorite games and memories of various systems.
Nintendo Entertainment System

This is the main system of 2 that I had over at my grandmother's house. I'd play it and the Nintendo 64 at her house over the weekend. They were both hooked up to a television in the living room. And it was legitimately my first video game system. The first video game I played was Super Mario Bros. 3. But I'll get into that in a minute. So every weekend I'd get some time on the NES, and let me tell you. It was just amazing, it was fun. Back then I didn't really get the concept of "This game is good for X reasons" "This game is bad for Y reasons." The game either held my attention and kept me playing, or it didn't, and that was the bottom line. I believe I had about... 20 games in total, I don't remember exactly, and when my grandmother passed away, my cousin took the NES and all of the games claiming them as "Her's". My favorites included Castlevania, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 1, Crystalis, and Mega Man 2.

So I guess I'll talk about my ABSOLUTE favorite on NES, that being Castlevania.

Castlevania is without a doubt the best game on the NES in my opinion. The game was fucking hard. Simply put. But the game wasn't hard because of bad controls, cheap enemies, or lack of proper preparation, but genuine difficulty. For those of you unfamiliar with the game, you play as Simon Belmont, a vampire hunter infiltrating Dracula's castle to... you guessed it, kill Dracula. There are several levels all that have their own feel, own music, and own difficulty. It's so hard for me to pick my favorite level out of all of them, probably the level with the mummies as the boss. Or Death. And that was one of the cool things about this game, is that every single horror cliche imagined just melds into the game, and it feels perfect. It's relatively quick to beat (Took me about 50 minutes), it's got a simple objective, the controls feel balanced with the game, and it's just fun to play. Go play it. Now.
Super Nintendo Entertainment System

I owned one of these, but for a short time. My list of games was pretty short. Paper-Boy, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, Megaman X, and Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. I'd play this with my brother, and by myself. The game I'd play the most when I was alone was Chrono Trigger. And let's be honest here, Chrono Trigger, is one of the best games ever made. In recent years, I've played Castlevania IV, AKA the SNES remake of Castlevania. This would be my favorite game if Chrono Trigger was not made.

Now let's discuss Chrono Trigger.

This is my favorite game of all time. Hands down. Chrono Trigger had the mish-mash RPG system of Final Fantasy, a FANTASTIC story, loveable characters, plenty of things to see and explore, great controls, and great graphics. The time travel element was enough to get me interested in this game, but when you get down to it, and play it for a while, it just envelopes you in its story line, throwing new punches and twists at every turn. For those of you who didn't play this game, (you miserable fucks) the basic story line is this. You play as a young boy named Crono. It's the year 1000 in the kingdom of Guardia, Crono's friend Lucca creates a teleportation machine for the Millennial fair. On his way to the fair, He runs into a girl named Marle. They go to the teleportation machine. Crono demonstrates it, and then Marle wants to give it a try. Marle goes to try it, and it fucks up and transports her into a portal, later discovered to be a time travel gate. Crono goes after Marle, and the story progresses from there. It's such a behemoth that I can't explain the entire thing in a few sentences.
There's plenty of things to do in this game, as well as a deep story line and background information that can be found out by just interacting with the game in the different time eras. There's a variety of items for every playable character. All 8 of them. Don't you want to kick ass as a frog with a mythical sword you went back to the prehistoric era to get the materials to fix it? I will tell you this right now, if you have yet to play this game, and you call yourself a gamer, you are not worthy of that title. This game is just that great of an experience, and to miss out on it is to watch a piece of your life fly out the window. It is a masterpiece.
I think that's all I'm gonna say, I want you guys to contribute to the thread as well! Gush, inject yourself with nostalgia, bash other people's favorites, just make sure to back it up with why. I might go on a rant for the N64 as well later on, but I'm too damn tired right now.
*Nostalgic sigh*
I've always been partial to Super Bomberman 2 for the SNES.

The only Bomberman I remember playing was the one on Game Boy. That was good fun.

Though in retrospect it went with a sidescrolling manner, rather then the standard format.
A sidescrolling Bomberman?
That ain't bomberman.

If it's the only Bomberman you've played, it is Bomberman :P But I do agree I should play the actual Bomberman sometime soon.
At least you didn't play this.

A terrible game.
A terrible game.
Definitely looks like it. I dunno what it is about the older games' charm that is so appealing. I just love them over the mainstream games nowadays. When Skyrim and MW3 were coming out, I replayed Castlevania and Megaman X, and it was a load of fun.
I never had a SNES or a 64, but Super Mario Bros 1 / Duck Hunt (NES) was a big part of my childhood.
I'll leave this image here.

Yeah, the combo version? That's the one I had, though we only had one zapper that didn't work, so I rarely played Duck Hunt.
EDIT:
Oh definitely. One of the best FPSs of all time.

It was the greatest for its time, but it has aged pretty terribly.

I disagree. I think it's only thought of that way is because people have gotten so attached to Call of Duty, and games with similar mechanics. And, in the beginning, Call of Duty was very similar to Goldeneye.
I never had a console until I was 10 (N64) but we had a pretty slick computer which lead to many hours of this game:

I was always hooked on Lucas Arts point-&-click adventure games. It's a shame Lucas Arts has gone down the shitter recently.
I have always wanted to play that game. It looks so awesome :c
Probably because it is! Play it, you won't regret it!
Don't forget to patch it though, since several parts bug on modern computers due to being too fast.
(Such as an incredibly annoying moment in a particular elevator)
Probably because it is! Play it, you won't regret it!
I never got used to the Resident Evil-esque controls. Why they ditched the point and click system is beyond me.
Games for me started with the PS1 and Spyro and Crash Bandicoot.

Where can I find it?
My favorite game of all time just might be Super Mario 64.

In terms of Bomberman games, I think the N64 trilogy was amazing.

I remember being able to point & click as well as tank controls.

I remember giggling in a very evil manner when I made them explode
My parents never let me have a game console until the PS2. But I always played mario party, bomberman, and other games at my neighbors house because they had a N64 and a gamecube later on.
Ah, a nostalgia thread, time to gush about dark forces 2 again.
