Mobile and Tablet Games Thread: Because we just don't have the time man
19 replies, posted
Every now and then, a user will post in Fast Threads asking for recommendations on what games they should get for their new phone or tablet. Because I'm sick of recommending the same games every single time, I thought it would be good to create a thread where we can all give in-depth recommendations, as well as just having a general discussion on them. I think for a guideline, that we should only discuss games on platforms such as iOS, Android, and other mobile operating systems.
There are still members of the PC gaming community today that disregard mobile and tablet games as nothing more than glorified Flash games with price tags added. This might have been the case in 2008, but as of early 2014 it is far from it. Mobile gaming is a massive industry, and not only are there heaps of indies who give it a go, but the big publishers such as Activision and EA have also joined in. Not just to test the waters, but investing for the long term. And they've brought their franchises with them.
Battlefield, Call of Duty, Need for Speed, The Sims, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto, Rage, Deus Ex... these franchises have all made their way into the mobile games ecosystem, and in full 3D as well. Even if some can't replicate their counterparts on the other systems, they do a damn fine job. But most impressive of these franchises is Grand Theft Auto, where GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas have all made their way to mobile in full recreations. And they play very good as well.
There are also the games made from indies, as well as the bigger companies that started on mobile games. Although they attracted controversy with their free-to-play model, Firemonkeys' Real Racing 3 is undeniably a great racing simulator with a good car and track selection as well as awesome graphics. Then there are other games like Galaxy on Fire 2 which offers good space combat, exploration and ship customisation. Can't forget Aralon, which the Elder Scrolls fans will love.
Below are a selection of games I recommend that you should check out if you haven't seen them already. I'll post links to the iOS versions, but if you use another OS you'll still get the idea.

An open-world RPG with a main storyline, tonnes of side missions, character customisation, and shit like crafting and fishing. Play however you want pretty much.

Customise your ship, explore the galaxy. There's a main storyline but you're free to do whatever else you want to do. Fight pirates, do side missions, mine minerals, whatever.

Real Racing 3
Race on real tracks such as Laguna Seca, Mount Panorama, Suzuka, Dubai Autodrome, Silverstone etc, and in over 70 cars from Nissan Silvias to Shelby Cobras, McLaren F1s, Pagani Huayras, and FIA GT1 cars.
I'm not going to steal all the thunder, there are heaps of other awesome games out there and I won't link to any more at the moment.
I recommend any games by Kairosoft.
I have played them all and they are all 5* flawlessly excellent games.
They're usually management focused sim-types, and the best thing is, you just pay once for all the content, and can play as fast or slow as you like. None of this greedy DLC bullshit.
I'll outline a few of my favourites below:
Sushi Spinnery

For those who don't know, you are a spaceship captain. Anything can and will go wrong.
Anyone who wants an action games on their phone/tablet, but isn't sure about the controls, get Max Payne Mobile.

The game follows Max Payne, a fugitive ex-cop who is out for revenge on those who killed his wife, child, and best friend. It was great a decade ago, and it is great now.

I gave up near the end, at the part where you have to shoot explosives off of an elevator's shaft walls, WHILE you're in the moving elevator.
It's just impossible to aim that fast on a touchscreen

To be honest it was a pain in the ass for me in the PC version.
I just used the grenade launcher

I don't think I've ever come across a 3D game wit a decent system of touchscreen aiming. Although it means you have to play the game in a certain position (of your body, so if you're sitting down you can't lay down) I found the accelerometer aiming system of Call of Duty: Zombies to actually be really precise. I just can't understand why other developers won't implement that system.
Any of you guys play puzzles and dragons? Definitely my favorite for phone games so far.
You guys should check The Room out, it's pretty fun.
Haven't played The Room 2, though, it's Coming Soon™ to android
I've been having fun with Anomaly 2 so far. it's better than the old anomaly for sure (Thanks to them ditching those really cheesy British accents.. seriously NOBODY over here talks like that ever)
What with the new abilities and the unit morphing mechanic mean that there is a plethroa of new approaches to any given situation.
Here, have Carnivores ported to Android. I played this for a while until I had one of every dinosaur in my trophy room (yes, even T-Rex, but it was blind luck that caused me to down that motherfucker).
Got a samsung galaxy ace 2, anything i can play on that?
Grand theft auto San Andreas is on iOS and android for like 7 dollars
All the GTA games and Minecraft are fun. Also Plague Inc. is great!
i got FFIII for kindle a while back and it was rad to play through
got 2 bullet hell shooters too, one as a daily free one, and other i just paid for, xelorians and plasma sky, both well worth the money. sonic CD is pretty good too, if you can get used to the touch controls (which i couldnt)
jones on fire is neat too, got it for free and its a cute/fun game to play to pass the time, and who doesnt love saving kittens?

Just a FYI, if people buy this and it crashes a lot, just restart your device. I had it crash every five minutes but after restarting my tablet it runs flawlessly.

Missing features is standard with any version of Minecraft not on computers.

They constantly add new features. Its a nice version of Minecraft. I only paid 10c for it because Google is awesome.

I expect it to not be the same as the PC version, but that doesn't say what exactly it lacks. Does it have survival mode, does it have the nether, does it have multiplayer?

I know for a fact it has survival and multiplayer, but I'm not sure on the Nether. It's been awhile since I played M:PE.

I was thinking of getting it, but the $7.50 price tag was putting me off. It's funny, even a mobile game on discount to 99 cents won't help convince me to buy it but as soon as I see an Xbox 360 or PS4 game on special (so anywhere up to $80) and I'll impulse buy it. Maybe I'm just spoilt by the F2P games like Real Racing 3 and Dungeon Hunter 4 - the ones where you can pretty much get through the entire game and its masses of content without dropping a single cent on them. I'm a dick like that.
Firemonkeys confuse me though. So in Real Racing 3 you gradually 'unlock' (you don't get immediate access to them, you still have to spend credits) cars as you make your way through the game, so that means when you start off even if you buy the currency packs you can still only buy 4 cars from 80 in the game. When RR3 was first released you could buy any car as long as you had the credits regardless of where you were in the game - I was still racing Ford Focus' when I managed to save up for a McLaren MP4-12C.
If they wanted revenue from in-app purchases, wouldn't they just have all cars unlocked so that players might consider spending real money to get the top end cars, rather than the system now where you have to drop at least a hundred hours into the game to get your way there to unlock the cars so you can purchase them? At least add a real money purchase to unlock all cars for in-game purchase. Took me forever to get to the FIA GT1 cars but I still have the Ferrari's and hypercars to unlock. I don't mind the grind (lol rhyme) but I know not as many people are as patient as I am.
