• Half-Life 2: Tweaked [Config]

Well, since I had no idea where else to post this, I'll do it right here. So I personally love Half-Life and have played about every single game to boredom. So I wanted a little more challenge. I had a quick look at the damage and ammunition variables etc. This is something anyone can do, but I just want to share this slightly more challenging HL2 experience with everyone in here. Here's a few things I tried to emphasize here: - Your damage multipliers are almost identical to NPC's (meaning a shot that can kill an NPC can kill you too) - Less ammo capacity (since less bullets kill, you have to conserve it a little too) - Tweaked enemy health to accommodate the new damages (Metrocop health from vanilla to tweaked: 40 --> 115) - Tweaked movement speed (you're not a jet engine with feet anymore) Overall from my own playtesting it kind of makes the game tougher. I had no problem casually walking through the game even on Hard, but now I have to hide my ass from the chopper in the canal chapters if I want to keep my dear life, especially when on foot. Unfortunately I couldn't find the commands that tweaked the accuracy of weapons, but excluding the SMG and shotgun, not holding down M2 and aiming a tad more carefully makes you just as accurate. HUD is also disabled so you have to kind of evaluate how much you're been shot. Health Chargers also get a way bigger meaning here: they can show you how much health you lost. Since the script itself is quite long, I'll share the GB site here: http://www.gamebanana.com/scripts/7293
Is there a way to tweak graphic settings like this even higher?
Is there a way to tweak graphic settings like this even higher?
There are a few cvars that are usually disabled to enhance fps. You can tweak those to enhance graphical quality a little, such as uncompressed textures, higher draw distance, preloading the maps completely etc.

Actually, this is about the first time I've ever been killed by a manhack. Fuckers deal 25 damage per hit.
Well, that seems to be cool, but I think I've played HL2 too much already. Good job btw.
Well, that seems to be cool, but I think I've played HL2 too much already. Good job btw.
Thanks, I try my best to improve this as I progress in the game. I already did a play through on a way easier config, but this requires obviously more thought. I got genuinely scared when I was surrounded by two separate Civil Protection patrols and heard them running towards the small nook I was hiding in. At the last moment I crouch jump out, shoot the two guys on the left and switch into the magnum to kill the cop on the right. Jump back to cover, wait with the crowbar until the manhack comes and carefully time each swing to take it out without damage. Even with all that consideration, I still took 40 damage.

This should have been a difficulty setting to begin with. Edit: Oh and you should do this with EP1 and 2.
This should have been a difficulty setting to begin with. Edit: Oh and you should do this with EP1 and 2.
How about Half-Life Source too! The weapons did ridiculously little damage to for example the HECU Grunts or whatever they're called, it always takes atleast half to an entire magazine to the face to kill them, even up close, no matter what weapon used. It annoys me to no end
Defending Alyx in the courtyard while she fiddles with the Combine barrier behind her is going to be an absolute nightmare with this.
Defending Alyx in the courtyard while she fiddles with the Combine barrier behind her is going to be an absolute nightmare with this.
I always fucking hate that level
Playing through HL2 with Smod:Redux on hardest setting was an absolute bitch. Gonna test if this can get me down later.
This should have been a difficulty setting to begin with. Edit: Oh and you should do this with EP1 and 2.
If people really want this, I can do it too. It really includes just a few new enemies so little tweaking is required, but I need to think how difficult do I really want to make Hunters. Early on when you encounter them they should be though as shit, but near the end they get really numerous, so they should not act as much as minibosses at that point. Also, Zombine might be easy but the Overwatch Shotgunner might be a difficult one. I want him to be droppable by a double-barrel shotgun blast, but still strong enough to endure a lot of damage. Also, seeing that a few shotgun blasts at point-blank range can take you down, he should be a first priority. Also considering making Elites a lot tougher. Problem is, skill.cfg does not include combine elite health, so I can only assume they share the health variable with the normal Soldier. Instead, increasing NPC's AR2 damage would be the more viable option. Right now it's 18 instead of 8, but I could increase it to 20, making 5-9 hits drop you depending on how much suit power you have left. Episode One and Two editions are coming up if this post gets +5 agree ratings. [editline]21st December 2011[/editline]
I remember playing HL2 and then going back to Half-Life. Headcrabs were actually a challenge back then.
Well, seeing that fast crabs deal a ton more damage and poison crabs STILL take me down to one hp, yeah this is going to be a little more challenging. Especially normal headcrabs. Zombies are something to look out for, too. Normally one swing deals 8 and two 15 damage. Now the same attacks deal 20 and 40 damage. You can notice the increase right there. But I'm thinking of increasing it to 30-60 and Poison Zombie's swings to 85. [editline]21st December 2011[/editline]
Defending Alyx in the courtyard while she fiddles with the Combine barrier behind her is going to be an absolute nightmare with this.
Really, it is doable, mainly the problem will be deciding which order do you use the weapons in. This doesn't restrain any weapons from you, if anything it makes them deadlier, but you gotta restrain from spray & praying with every single one. I'm probably gonna start out with the SMG. The go AR2->357->Xbow->RPG->Shotgun->Pistol. And yeah, RPG's will be useful because Elites are gonna come with normal soldiers. AR2 hurts like a motherfucker in this script, especially the latest version. So hopefully the supplies help me last. Also, should I weaken the health and suit chargers or the pickup vials, batteries and kits? I think making both a tad worse would increase use of tactics as health would get more scarce. Right now I'm considering making batteries restore 3 suit power, vials 5 health, kits 15, chargers 45 health and 60 suit. Tell me if you feel that's way too rough. Then again, it probably is but doable with enough tactics.
I've always looked for a script that made the game harder. After playing the game over and over again, it's just way too easy. I wish you didn't add health to the meto cops though.
I've always looked for a script that made the game harder. After playing the game over and over again, it's just way too easy. Don't worry, the headshot multiplier is so ridiculously high on NPC's that they still die quite well if you aim carefully. I drop them with two to three headshots and they have quite shit accuracy themselves. Just don't stand in the open and they don't have any hope to defeat you. Right now I'm in the canals, going to fight the chopper for the last time. Probably gonna die a lot but that's life. Oh, and each mine deals 60 damage on my current script. I just remembered that thing spams them by the hundreds. Fuck. EDIT: So apparently my configuraton file stopped working for whatever reason. I'm looking into it, but it seems that regardless of what I do, the game doesn't accept the new values but instead keeps the old ones.

Well, I've looked into it and am currently attempting communication with Valve. In the meanwhile, I'll start working on Episode One and Two configs and see if they work due to any weird magic different Source versions might have.
Good and bad news here, folks!
+Got scripts in Episodes to work +They are hard as fuck -Crashes Basically, I experimented stripping the entire thing to it's bare bones and then trying to run skill.cfg. Unfortunately, it was exactly the thing that caused Episode One to crash every time I was in combat. I have no detailed information of why it keeps crashing, all I know is that the moment I try to change anything within it, the entire game goes hoo-ah on NPC interactions. I can't get it to work at all in HL2, Ep1 seems to crash and Ep2 is untested yet, although I'm expecting the same results as Ep1. Fortunately, I discovered this config works wondrously on any Source mod that uses the same enemies. For example HL2: Calamity and Sebastian work pretty fucking well with this. I personally just tried Sebastian and my god, was it fun. It's almost like an alternate Episode One. Now, assuming that mods accept this without qualms, I should learn how to make a mod for just my config :v:
