Now this is something that gets on my nerves a lot. The amount of sexism you find on online games. I've always wondered why us men seem to think it's okay to verbally abuse women on forums, games and any where else on the internet. Now I'm posting this here because verbal sexism towards women is always found on games such as CoD, css, Left 4 Dead and most other FPS games. I've always wondered why male gamers do this and what drives male gamers to fling abuse like this over chat and mic to women that just want to play the game like everybody else. I know that action games don't appeal towards a female audience so should we at least praise the female gaming community rather than pushing them away. I have two steam friends that are girls and feel that it's better to play with local friends rather than on public servers. If they want to play on a public game they have to change their names to not give away their gender and both like to use microphone communication which they feel they can't because the abuse they will get simply because of their gender. We all receive some abuse online in one way or another. I've gotten "British fag" and my all time favourite "Posh fucking tea sipper" for using a mic. But that's just simple abuse. Where I can just simply jump to the maturity of the person mentally or physically. That will probably be one or two people doing that. But for a girl that could be most of the server or a group of people. Which with the female gaming community being very small will rarely have anyone to defend them in a argument. Unless the is that one rare mature person that sees right from wrong. I know when it comes to gaming it's okay to an extent not to give a shit about someone's feelings but the is a limit. Now this is what I understand twelve year old uses a mic hurts everyone's ears. Everyone tells him to shut up and stop using the mic till he either does or leaves the server. That's what I understand. It could be seen as ageism but from my experiences I see why people genuinely tell them not to use the mic. What I don't understand woman uses the mic perfectly able to understand her she doesn't put anyone off. None of this shouting bull shit or abuse. The woman would probably get more abuse than an irritating immature kid shouting, raging and swearing every five seconds. So Facepunch, What is your opinion? Why do most male gamers treat the all female gamers in this way? Please share your opinion.
Simplest answer, most male gamers are nerds who have no real idea of social interaction or ettiquette and are thus confounded when met with a female of the species who also happens to game. Also because they think it's cool.
I don't want to generalize, but I've seen a lot of "girl gamers" and a lot of the ones I've seen feel the need to talk on the mic and remind us that they are in fact a female playing games that are probably more geared towards males. Maybe this is just my experience but I generally just mute them and if a game has no mute option I'll just leave. If it's someone actually contributing and helping the team then I see no issue and I'm not sure why they would receive verbal abuse if they're being helpful, but there's a lot of cases I've seen where they're basically asking for it. Again that doesn't apply to all of them, and there's a lot of annoying male gamers as well, just voicing my opinion based on my experiences. I may very well just be in the wrong place at the wrong time in some games.
its mainly the gamer GURRLS that get flamed like this. Every other girl that plays normally like any other person is fine.
I don't have an experience with people abusing females. Hell, if anything, it'd be just for fun. Today, I joined a server and everyone started calling me a fag, I started calling everyone a shitlord and we all griefed each other. For jack reason. Pretty fun. :v:
Hell, a girl gamer in my part of the country is a struggle. I'd be glad to find one.
Don't flaunt that you are a girl playing video games then we wont wont even touch you

In my experience, though, unless you're talking about Xbox live players or recent CoD players, there hasn't been much negative sentiment towards women.
Because most people in online multiplayer shooters are wankers. Try to join any public game in L4D2, for example. Also, this is another reason why: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/there-are-no-girls-on-the-internet
Simple solution, play games with more mature audiences.
Yep, back in the days of Mechwarrior 4, We used to have a female clanner with us, did it matter she was female? Nope, although there was friendly banter/taunting done because of it (but none of that was considered abuse, even by he.r) What mattered was she was good at piloting a mech.
My gamer girl friends usually stay on their games for girls. And they can't play fps games.
Girls should stay off the internet and our video games. The only reason men came to play video games is because they were scared of girls when they were little, now they taunt us and desecrate our sanctuary
-snop-
Male gamers abuse males too, I know that one chick in my BF3 clan has demanded to be treated like a bro IE don't ever get awkward sweaty hard on for her breasts. Granted the clan is 100% bro-attitude (friends all around) but yeah this is quickly getting off topic. I feel like gamers are profoundly hostile when using voice communication. When they are met with someone they can't immediately identify with this only gets worse. Also I would love to game with your posh tea sipping faggot ass. Your accent gives me a hueg broner
I am not really convinced that girls play video games and that they hang out on gaming forums. I mean, I heard some stories, but I can only believe that those are true, I have no proof to be certain. But, for this discussion lets pretend they are here somewhere. The fact is that the "male" population is in great deal made of kids and teenagers that haven't really developed a real respect for other human beings. On the Internets they live in a fantasy in which they are all LIKE A BOSS and nobody can really stop them from behaving like that. Let's just hope that they will mature one day. Now, if those people are in fact adults behaving like that... well you all know what to think about those.
-snop-
Oh right, my clan is all 18++ so that probably helps
WoW bitches are the best. Most of them are starving for attention and will 95% of the time give you nudes after you get to "know" them.
it's a simple social issue seriously i've been talking to someone on steam who is the opposite gender of me for years and we're best niggas and we both have the same personality types you gotta look over genders, which in my opinion, is a overly trivial thing to care about it's just fuckheads who want to metaphorically flash their dick who actually act like this
I don't really treat girls any different than I treat guys on the servers I play on. They're all pretty chill and fun to play with for the most part, so I just talk / interact with them the same as I do the rest of the players. In the end we're all just people playing a game for fun. Wow, so that player has a vagina, wooooo. It's hilarious to watch people practically stumble over themselves at the chance to talk to them though. I will say that the ones that come in and flaunt the shit out of their female status are annoying as hell, though. At that point the troll guns come out.
I don't think i've ever met a girl gamer that was not all "<3 OMG I HAVE LADYPARTS".
I'm fine with them as long as they aren't all "LOL I'M A GIRL PAY ATTENTION TO ME AND GIVE ME STUFF"
I've never heard abuse, most openly vocal female gamers I've seen are self-entitled asswipes who have the majority of the males in the server eating out of their hands. A lot are handed admin perms, TF2 weapon/hats, etc. Of course, there's plenty more normal ones, but you don't notice them since they blend in and act like a decent respectable person. Only the idiots seem to make a point of being heard.
I've actually only met 1 girl gamer and she was really cool. We used to play Halo together. She was obsessed with teabagging. Kind of really weird, now that I think about it.

They should be in the kitchen making me a sammich On the real doe, most of gamer nerds have not spoken to girls so it's unusual for them
They are gamers that just happen to have lady parts that I will most likely never see in person anyways. Who cares?
because they are immature and immature boys like to pick on girls
I'm totally fine with female gamers. As long as they act normally, politely, and funny. And know how to play.
Male players don't abuse female players, players verbally abuse all other players regardless of who they are.
