• Multiplayer games not working, at all

If i get banned for this, i'm gonna have to dismember mikymikmik for overriding the rules. Anywho. I'm currently having issues with all multiplayer source games and mods (i.e. using hl2.exe). When I launch the game, whether it be garrys mod or counter-strike source, steam shows me as ingame like normal, but the game fails to launch. I investigated further and found that in all instances the process hl2.exe manages to run, but stops as soon as it uses 10,000 K of memory (As per task manager's process list.) I've tried reinstalling; just wasted my bandwidth. I've verified the cache files for all the affected games as well as the half-life series (which, by the way, works as normal.) Now, there's no way in hell i'm gonna reinstall steam unless it's guarunteed to fix this, as I currently have no way and nowhere to back up my files. Can you give me any insight? I believe the issue started about a week ago, when I attended a large LAN. It had stopped working between my packing up and setting up the computer at the event. In a possibly related side-note, I currently get windows errors reporting the HID.dll isn't working. Thanks for listening, Flaillomanz. Below is steam support's replies so far, none of which worked:
Hello, Thank you for contacting Steam Support. Please provide a screenshot of any error(s) you are seeing. Also, follow the instructions linked below to provide a diagnostic report for your system. The task manager thing is self explanatory, too; Is this reply auto-generated? I'll attach my .nfo to this reply. Thanks for helping, anyway.... also, apparently, no-one I know (or on the forums as far as I can tell) have had this problem before. And it's still happening. To re-clarify, its only the multiplayer source games. [Message by Support Tech Robert on Fri, 30th Dec 2011 3:38 am] Hello, There may be a problem with the Steam client Service. This service is a required component of Steam on Windows Vista and Windows 7. If the Service is not operating properly, certain Steam functions may fail. To repair the Steam Client Service, please do the following: Click the Start button, then 'All Programs', and 'Accessories' Right-click on Command Prompt and click "Run as administrator..." In the command prompt, type the following command, including quotation marks, and press Enter: "C:\Program Files\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe" /repair Note: C:\Program Files\Steam\ is the default installation directory for Steam - change this to the correct directory if you installed Steam to a different location. This process will take a few minutes to complete. Once finished, the message "Steam Client Service repair completed." will appear. Now, reboot your computer and re-test the original issue. The following instructions describe how to temporarily disable applications running in the background which can cause conflicts with Steam. These instructions are for temporary, diagnostic use only and your system should not be left in this state. Please try this: Click the Start button, then "Run" (or Windows key + R) Type in: msconfig Choose "Selective Startup" Uncheck the box labeled "Load Startup Items". Now, click on the "Services" tab. Please make sure the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box *is* checked. Then, click "Disable All". If you are using Vista or Windows 7, please re-check the "Steam Client Service" as this is required for Steam to function on these operating systems. Click "OK" and allow your computer to restart. Test the issue and let us know the results. This is for diagnostic purposes only. You should not leave your computer in this state, but it may help us determine the cause of the issue. To set the system back to normal, launch msconfig again and choose "normal startup", close the window and restart your computer. If the issue persists, please *temporarily* uninstall (not disable) all NOD32 Anti-Virus and Hamachi software and re-test the issue. Should the issue continue, please provide an Msinfo report *after* making the above changes. I'm out of internet for the month, so I'd rather wait before uninstalling ESET... it takes a while to download, I purchased online. And, small update, through experimenting with the games I have, it turns out only the multiplayer source games I purchased from steam fail. Multiplayer modifications such as Garrys Mod 9 work fine, but Garrys mod 10 (which was 10 bucks) does not, as does TF2, DOD:S and HL2:DM. In other words, only the games within the "sourcemods" folder work. All my other games work fine (like fallout new vegas). While I wait for my internet to reset, if you have any other possible fixes (no matter how unlikely) could you please share them with me? Thank you. [Message by Support Tech Robert on Wed, 11th Jan 2012 8:49 am] Hello, Please try the following: Exit Steam entirely. Browse to your Steam installation (Usually C:\Program Files\Steam\) Rename the "steamapps" folder to "old_steamapps" Re-launch Steam and re-install the game. Once the installation is complete, test the issue. If this resolves the issue, you may copy the new files into the "old_steamapps" folder and rename it to "steamapps" to restore your other games without re-downloading. If the issue is not resolved, you can rename the folder back to avoid having to re-install other games. [Message by you on Wed, 18th Jan 2012 9:36 pm] Sorry about not replying for a while. The issue still persists even after performing that... It is obviously not steam, then, that is the problem (is it safe to assume that?) I have noticed that after attempting to run the affected games, a windows repair box comes up, asking me if I want to repair files related to itunes (which I recently - just before the failure of the games - uninstalled). Could this have any bearing whatsoever, or is it just coincidence? I'm really stumped by this, and nobody I know seems to know a fix.
It has been quite a while since the issue started, and I REALLY want to get some hours in gmod before tafe starts. Anyone have any suggestions?

If only i could help you.
I fixed it! I'm so happy! The fix was actually a bit unorthodox, possibly unique, but for the record it's below. Once per boot, after launching any of the affected games, a few minutes elapsed before a popup informing me that some Apple files were corrupt appeared. The reason for this was my own stupidity; I deleted Itunes directly from c:program files instead of safely uninstalling it, and certain apple files were left in c/common files/apple. I attempted to delete them; turns out they were being used by one of the svchost processes, so I booted in safe mode and removed them. As this was the only change I have recently made, it is very likely that it was the fix - it might be a good idea to look into the compatability between orphaned apple files and steam. I'm ecstatic that this actually worked - the solution, it seemed, was right in front of me the entire time. Thank you for putting up with me and helping me through this tight spot. Well... to those of you that did :3 YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!
