I don't know if I shouldn't have made a thread just to ask about this.
Anyway, are there games similar to Mount and Blade or X3TC, like, they're sandbox, but you actually progress, getting more ships until you've got a fleet, more people until you've got an army and stuff, while establishing a decent financial foundation? Any kind would do, although one with a blend of action would be more preferable.

Sid Meier's Pirates was probably the biggest inspiration for Mount and Blade. But instead of a generic Middle-Ages theme it's all about pirates. It's a really good game so I suggest you try it out.
