Yes, amazing isn't it?
Along time ago people were yearning for something to do...and board games were invented.
But hey, who actually gives a shit about the past? Let's keep it in our time frame.
I'm going to start off with the most basic of board games... ready for it?

Monopoly

Charles Darrow is known to have played an Atlantic City variation of "Monopoly", created by his friends, and decided to sell copies of the game. In 1933 he launched it and it was a huge success. In 1935, Parker Brothers bought the rights from Darrow and started manufacturing a slightly updated version.
The objective of Monopoly is to bankrupt the other players to win.
There are many versions of Monopoly available today:

Axis & Allies

Axis & Allies is a strategy board game designed in 1981 by Larry Harris, and it is the most successful of Milton Bradley's Gamemaster series.
It depicts WWII on a grand scale, full global level. Up to five players can play on two different teams. The Axis which has Germany and Japan, and the Allies which has the USA, the United Kingdom, and the USSR. A full map of the world is provided, broken up in various chunks similar to Risk. The game comes with gobs of plastic miniatures that represent various military units during WWII. Players have at their disposal infantry, armor, fighters, bombers, battleships, aircraft carriers, submarines, troop transports, anti-air guns, and factories. All of the units perform differently and many have special functions. Players have to work together with their teammates in order to coordinate offenses and decide how best to utilize their production points. Players also have the option of risking production resources on the possibility of developing a super technology that might turn the tide of war.
There are several versions of the game available today:
Axis & Allies (2004 Revised edition)
Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
Axis & Allies 1942 Edition
Axis & Allies: Europe
Axis & Allies: Pacific
Axis & Allies: D-Day
Axis & Allies: Battle of the Bulge

Discuss: board games
Just want to say that Carcassonne and games like it are damn fun with a buddy and an alcoholic beverage. Especially when one keeps stealing the pieces and you play by your own rules.
Technically Tic-Tac-Toe isn't a board game, as board games, as in the name, require a board to play on. of course I'm sure people have made tic-tac-toe boards, but it's not a predominantly board game.
Tic-tac-toe is considered to be a board game, but technically it isn't.
I've never played chutes and ladders
I am always the car in Monopoly.
ALWAYS YOU FUCKERS
this will not end well
Settlers of Catan is one of the best board games i have ever played.
Although i end up spending too much resources making swastika roads.
Add Settlers of Catan to the OP.
I fucking love Risk, yet I haven't gotten an opportunity to play it in MONTHS.
Who the fuck actually has a smart board or touch-pad in their house. Not even a download link the OP.

Dungeons and Dragons is also very enjoyable, even if it's not traditionally seen as a board game.
Chutes and ladders? What the fuck is that.

Whenever my sister is coming home, we play fucking ticket to ride. Awesome board game.

At the beginning of the round, everyone gets 3 tickets. It has a starting and an ending point. Your goal is to build a railroad between the two points, using cards. If you can't finish the road, you will be substracted of the points that's on the ticket. Pretty fun actually.
Chutes and ladders? What the fuck is that.
Now snakes and ladders, however...
I agree with this, what the hell is Chutes and Ladders?

This so much. Chutes and ladders sounds like what the generic-brand version was called to avoid copyright :colbert:
Risk is awesome.
Risk is awesome.
Yeah but no one wants to play it because of the long playtime
Except me :saddowns:
I agree with this, what the hell is Chutes and Ladders?
There are many variants of the game across the globe, and in the USA it's always been called Chutes and Ladders.
There are many variants of the game across the globe, and in the USA it's always been called Chutes and Ladders.
Probably because mothers in America would complain that its made by the devil and the snakes are his servants trying to tempt the children to commit sins!
Like every other american game
Someone has not mentioned Dominion? Well, it really isn't a board game, but I still see it as a great traditional game none the less.

Dominion is a card game where you will build your hand up in order to obtain victory points.
and the setup goes something like this.

as you can see you start off with a certain amount of victory points and a certain amount of gold in order to purchase cards once your turn is gone the gold and all the cards you purchased from the gold get reshuffled back into your library until you next turn comes in which you will draw again.

In the first game alone there is a whole variety of cards you can choose from to play with, making every game always different.
here are some of the expansions if that's not enough for you
