What is Artemis?
Artemis is a multiplayer, multi-computer networked game for Windows computers.
Artemis simulates a spaceship bridge by networking several computers together. One computer runs the simulation and the "main screen", while the others serve as workstations for the normal jobs a bridge officer might do, like Helm, Communication, Engineering, and Weapon Control.
Artemis is a social game where several players are together in one room ("bridge") , and while they all work together, one player plays the Captain, a person who sits in the middle, doesn't have a workstation, and tells everyone what to do.
Artemis is a software game for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 (can be made to work on Mac and Linux).
Why You Should Care
If you were to bug a room where a group of people are playing Artemis, this is what you would hear the players saying:
Captain: Hostile report?
Science: Group of three cruisers in B4, 120 degrees from here.
Captain: Helm, take us to 120, warp 4 until we're approaching firing range, then use impulse.
Helm: Gotcha.
Captain: Engineering, power to the forward shields, phaser array, and torpedo tubes. Weapons, load two homing missiles and a nuclear.
Weapons: On it. What should I set phasers to?
Science: They're weakest against frequency C.
Weapons: Setting to C, targeting closest enemy.
Captain: Engineering, make sure the repair crews are standing by in the middle, we need them close to the front for repairs after we punch through, but not so close they'll be killed.
Engineering: Mhm.
Captain: Here we go.
[Battle ensues, helm is in constant communication with engineering and weapons to ensure proper firing arcs and shield distribution]
Captain: One enemy left. Comms, ask for their surrender.
Comms: They refuse.
Science: They're loading weapons.
Captain: Weapons, nuke 'em.
KRAKOW
Captain: All enemies down. Damage report?
Engineering: Shields already powering back up, one repair squad down.
Captain: Helm, set a course for station DC38. Comms, tell them to start building us some more nuclear missiles and to ready some replacement repairmen.
Comms: We have permission to dock.
Helm: Initiating docking.
If reading that doesn't make you want to play this, then either I'm terrible at representing this game or you have never experienced science fiction.
The game is $40, but you can install it on as many computers as you like. You can play online with some extra work, but the real charm is lost if you do. It takes only 2 or 3 people to man a ship very badly, 6 to do it well. There IS PvP combat.

Really neat idea but it would be way too much work to set things up to actually play.

It's really not so bad; generally speaking, if you're a gamer then you and most of your friends probably own laptops. That's really all you need.
looks complicated
looks complicated
It really isn't, since each player only has to control one or two aspects, except the captain who just tells people to shoot/scan/whatever.
how is gameplay? PICTURES?

Good point, but most of the gamers I know have laptops as well for school or work. But if you are a desktop gamer, then you and your friends probably have some old PCs around somewhere, and this can run well on a pretty damn low-end machine. Basically, if you can scrounge up 3 or 4 computers of any kind, excluding older Macs, you should be fine.

Watch the video up top, it shows some tidbits.
I play this with a few friends. It's fun if you know how to play.
If you don't, god help you.
This would be fucking amazing at a game convention or get-together.

It usually takes less than half an hour to learn how to control a given station, but of course getting good at it is another thing entirely, and being captain requires knowledge of the abilities and limitations of all of the stations.

Well, I'd say that's an average, not for all. Comms and Science take like 5 minutes but Engineering / Mainscreen can take a while.
Helm and Weapons are unique, too.
Man, if only I had 5 friends to play it with...
Man, if only I had 5 friends to play it with...
Two friends should be enough if you're willing to multitask a little bit and play on an easier difficulty. I played with just ONE friend today and had a lot of fun.
Oh god, well manned PVP at a LAN could be amazing, the $40 asking price seems a bit steep though, would probably split it between friends if I were to buy it.
This sounds amazing, but as Creeper said the price is pretty steep for something that'd take a lot of work to get going online then only play a few times.
This looks even better to grief on then SS13.

Yeah, but if you try the comms guy will punch you in the head.
I'd love this if you could mod it tbh.
lol this is a great idea and it looks hilarious. Sort of reminds me of Shores of Hazeron with all the consoles available, but the ship combat is more detailed.
Captain: One enemy left. Comms, ask for their surrender.
Comms: They refuse.
Science: They're loading weapons (Lie)
Captain: Ask for a Hail
Other team nuke the shit out of them
Captain: What the fuck noob
Weapon: FFS
Comms: lol

To be fair, that purchase allows you to install it as many times as you like on as many computers as you like, and you're encouraged to share it with all of your friends so that they can play with you. I've been doing just that, including installing it on a freaking Macbook from 2008.

Fully modable, with a visual mission constructor. You can even make missions where there's a Gamemaster controlling the events and enemies.

Oh nice, hopefully someone takes up the challenge and creates a mod for it based on the space battles of the Halo universe.
I got a free copy of this game for making a terrible video.
Share it with everyone.
A social game for antisocial people.
The whole thing would be awkward as hell to play, barking orders at your friends in a sad, roleplay environment.
I wish I had $40.
Wait, so can this be played online with random people?
Wait, so can this be played online with random people?
No, you have the IP and connect to your friends.
Ah, Hmm.
We should try to get a FP thing set up for it.
