I haven't seen any real active Skin threads around here lately, and since I enjoy making skins as a hobby I thought it would be neat with a new place where people can share and get feedback on their creations. Sorry about this thread being pretty late compared to when I announced it in the general chat thread, I've been a bit busy with work and shiz :v:
Anyway, here's some of the shit I enjoy doing

Now for all you people new to making skins, I thought it might be appropriate to share some tips and tricks on my workings.
What program do you use to make my skins with?
I personally use MCSkinEdit to create all my skins. It has a nice character pattern laid out that makes it very easy to draw and preview new characters, it also automatically makes the character background transparent which is a requirement to utilize the hat layer.
What is your preferred method of previewing and taking screenshots of your character?
I prefer to either take a screenshot of the inventory in the game, or use the "import" feature in Skincraft.
Skincraft has one of the most accurate previewers for how your skin will actually look in game.
The previewer in MCSkinEdit is very useful when creating your skin, but sadly it's not a perfect representation of what your skin will actually look ingame with the main issue being that the hat layer is very exaggerated compared to how it actually looks like in the game. (Furthermore it also spasms and jumps around like a 5 year old on crack)
The Hat Layer
One of the things that makes the attention to detail stand out in a lot of my skins is that I don't use the hat layer just for hats, but also for facial features.
The hat layer when making skins works a lot like the helmets do in game, they're an additional layer drawn outside of your characters head. This layer is very easy to utilize if you're using MCSkinEdit where all you have to do is draw within the lines, but if you use any other program to draw you need to make sure that the entire background of the character is transparent and that the file is always saved as a PNG. Nothing you draw on the background layer will show up in the game and might prevent the hat layer from showing.
This layer is excellent for making hats, but also for adding beards, jaws, hair, bug eyes, big foreheads and other defining characteristics.
Is there more layers I can draw on except the hat layer when making Skins?
No. Sadly, you only get a layer around the head to work with. There is no way to extend the hat layer further outward, and no way to add layers anywhere else on your characters body. There are no workarounds to make this work online with other people.
The bottom layer of your characters head is previewed wrong with most programs
This is a how the bottom layer of your characters head looks from the front and back in most Skin Previewers
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l189/Simski_2006/test1prev.png
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l189/Simski_2006/test2prev.png
This is how the bottom layer of the same skin looks like while in game
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l189/Simski_2006/test3game.png
As you might notice, the bottom layer is backwards. This is something to keep in mind when making your skins, especially if you plan to use the hat layer to make a beard or a jaw. Don't trust the skin previewers too much, load your skins in the game every now and then and look at them inside your inventory.
The Noise Filter
When you feel completely done drawing your skin, it's often a good idea to use a noise filter to simulate the grainy effect on most Minecraft skins. MCSkinEdit comes with an inbuilt noise filter that's very easy to use. I highly suggest saving an original unfiltered copy before adding the filter in case you wish to make any other changes to the skin down the line, or in case the filter ends up making your skin look like ass. I personally recommend setting noise somewhere around 17-20, as more noise than that might often destroy small details on your skin.
Anything else?
It's usually a good idea to load the default character skin as a background when you make a new skin. Using the default skin as reference is a good way to see where on the sides you need to have slightly darker colors to simulate shadowing.
Here's some of the skins i've made:

I've made tons more, but i can't be arsed to post them here.
Here's the skin i'm currently using, made with the new format:

I'd be willing to take requests if anyone want anything specific. I wont do skins in the new format however, not until SkinEdit's been updated.
Here's a fun idea i had a while ago:

You could probably draw another face under the head aswell.

My attempt at Gman
Made this. Something along the lines of sci-fi, I guess. Not the best thing out there, but I think it's better than my last one.
