• Crowdsourcing a Source Mod

I'm curious of the legality in this matter; is it fair practice for developers to use something like KickStarter or Fund Anything to raise some kind of salary for their efforts on a Source mod, say something as modest as $5,000, and then release said mod in its finished entirety free to the public? Is Valve entitled to some of that money since their engine is being used? Is their permission necessary?
Go ask on: sourceengine@valvesoftware.com. Tho not sure.
I believe not. The Black Mesa developer team (not a developer team of Valve) don't and can't accept money for donations for example, for legal reasons.
The Black Mesa dev team can't and will not accept donations. The main reason for this is the fact that they are using someone else's engine and intellectual property (Half-Life). The Source engine belongs to Valve and hence the dev team aren't allowed to make money from it without a commercial license. The ads on the website generate enough money to keep the site up and running. If you have the money and really want to do something with it, go and give it to some charity such as Child's Play.
