I didn't see anything about this posted, so forgive me if I missed it http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-half-life Just stumbled across this and it looks pretty damn cool. My god, the fucking Gluon effect. [t]http://media.moddb.com/images/mods/1/24/23500/hgruntgibs.jpg[/t] http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-half-life/videos/bhl-demo-1#imagebox From that video the gore actually seems to work in a similar fashion to Brutal Doom, it's surprisingly awesome looking. I wonder how long this guy has been working on this. [t]http://media.moddb.com/images/mods/1/24/23500/gibs.jpg[/t] [t]http://media.moddb.com/images/mods/1/24/23500/Bfg.jpg[/t]
That BFG doesn't match the art style at all.
It's kinda cool, I guess, albeit Brutal Doom's kinda worn on me as of late, so this just isn't all that special in my opinion. And as Smug said, the BFG is wildly out of place.
The caption says its an easter egg so hopefully if it is in it it wouldn't be easy to find. He could just replace it with the displacer though since it functions the same, and it looks like the attack is from that.
Oh man, I hope he figures out how to do taunts and executions. Stupidly entertaining over-the-top shit.
I hope there will be HEV folks who you need to save and then they'll start fighting with you.
It's cool to finally see proper dismemberment in this game.
It's cool to finally see proper dismemberment in this game.
The last time I saw partial gibbing was on HL: Invasion.
Reminds me of Solider of Fortune quite a bit
In one of the vids it showed you could attach the silencer to the glock. I wonder if he's attempting to add some sort of stealth? Regardless, I hope the extra gameplay additions can be stripped down/disabled so I can just have base HL with this type of gore if I want to do something a bit more vanilla
this looks wonderful
Anything Brutal is fantastic.
From the looks of this thread, you can make Brutal Doom, but Brutal Half-Life is off limits.
From the looks of this thread, you can make Brutal Doom, but Brutal Half-Life is off limits.
doom is also a game that takes place in hell and is a brutal game so doing something like this works very well in its favor, this mod also isn't amazingly well-executed so it doesn't really live up to the "Brutal" name IMO [editline]dicks[/editline] yeah I guess you're right samien, to the mod's credit it does look very promising
doom is also a game that takes place in hell and is a brutal game so doing something like this works very well in its favor, this mod also doesn't really live up to its legacy IMO
probably because it is still in development and hasn't come out yet why don't you hold your judgement until it comes out and you get to play it for free, eh?
If more blood with middle finger and "FUCK YOURSELF" will be added, then it'll be a good reason to play HL again.
To everyone in this thread rating disagrees and dumbs, you are aware that there are mods where you can play as a cat, you can play though a silly interpretation of the Hazard course, and play though complete and utter nonsense, right? Brutal Half-Life is not out of the question.
None of those are one-trick gimmicks that are riding on the coattails of a different mod for a different game.
Is that really your problem with this? It was done for a different game? Jesus fuck, a few days ago I was eating at an Italian restaurant with my family. They also served ice cream. A few tables down, another family was ordering their desert. A six year old kid wanted vanilla strawberry swirl, so did his sister. When he his sister wanted one too, he fell the fuck out, crying his face off and almost got them kicked out. I guess I should thank that kid for something, because now I have a face for you.
I think I was pretty clear in stating that the rather evident flaw with this mod is that it's simply trying to be a carbon copy clone of a different mod that established its success on its own premises. This mod has even gone as far as to ape the "Brutal" moniker apparently in an attempt to ride on Brutal Doom's popularity. This is rather akin to WarZ appearing on Steam after the success of DayZ, or the million and one Slenderman clones (some commercial, including one on Steam) appearing after that one guy made that one Slenderman game. Can you think of a better textbook example of riding coattails? There is a difference here, though: this author seems to be very competent and quite technically capable of making something that's all his own. As Mr. Bloodshot noted above, this could be a pretty cool "extra gore" mod or some such if he tries to remain marginally vanilla. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen. It appears the author wants to rip off Brutal Doom as much as possible, intending to modify all of the Half-Life weapons somehow (iron sights like Brutal Doom is my guess) and shoehorn in fatalities. I'm going to guess that Gordon will probably spout hilarious Doom comic quotes as well because that's what the Brutal Doom guy did in his mod! But unfortunately for Brutal Half-Life here, Brutal Doom became wildly successful in that it was a modular gameplay modification that could be loaded with any of the many thousands of vanilla Doom/Doom 2 map sets that are available. BD was compatible with just about anything you could think of, and adding compatibility with those other WADs is trivial due to the nature of Doom modding. However, Half-Life modding, while very robust, isn't nearly as flexible. There are exceedingly few vanilla Half-Life map sets around, and Half-Life mods are not cross-compatible by design. You could run Brutal Half-Life in Half-Life's levels, maybe USS Darkstar, and not a lot more, rendering it largely a one-trick gimmick. And that's why trying to copy Brutal Doom down to a T is a flawed plan: Doom and Half-Life are two very different games. You can't expect ideas that work in one to magically transfer over to another. From what he's shown, I really think this author could have made a cool mod if he built it to Half-Life's strengths. But he's not. Instead, he's trying to make a Doom mod in Half-Life. And that's just downright brutal.
I think I was pretty clear in stating that the rather evident flaw with this mod is that it's simply trying to be a carbon copy clone of a different mod that established its success on its own premises.
Yeah- I don't care. I want Brutal Doom's outstanding features haphazardly shoved into Half Life. I've seen how it can go, and I'm not NOT pleased. It's a fucking mod. Synchronicity matters as much as your opinion on the subject.
Well, the only way to do something like that is if this would be for Gmod as an addon, so you could use it on most of the HL2 stuff. Anyway, I still saying that mod is the closer to a complete goremod on GoldSrc (which it makes me think, what if he changes their mind, and does a remake of Scientist Slaughterhouse with this?).
Which it makes me think, what if he changes their mind, and does a remake of Scientist Slaughterhouse with this?
My life would finally be complete.
My life would finally be complete.
Well, this mod is still under progress. When it gets released, we could ask him to do it. Who knows, maybe he loved that mod too and accept the challenge.
I'm going to guess that Gordon will probably spout hilarious Doom comic quotes as well because that's what the Brutal Doom guy did in his mod!
Don't be silly. Gordon will obviously be spouting hilarious Freeman's Mind quotes.
If more blood with middle finger and "FUCK YOURSELF" will be added, then it'll be a good reason to play HL again.
If you need a reason to replay HL1 you need your head examined. I have to say that for a shitty analogy, Half-Life modding is like a model railway kit with patrillions of peices, but it'll always be the track you build. Whereas DooM is like a pot of plasticene, You can always meld it together trivially, but you're still within certain restrictions.
You talking shit about cat life and hazardous course?
No. I'm using them as good examples of the silliness that comes with Half-Life mods.
can i be a beta tester for Brutal Half-Life, it looks absolutely cool (User was banned for this post ("dumb bump" - postal))
