Among them is a major improvement to Dota 2’s engine that we are aiming to release in the first half of next year. One of the main features in this engine improvement will be the ability to rapidly create entirely new game modes. You’ve seen some of this work with the Dota 2 Workshop Tools Alpha that began earlier this year. In the past, our Diretide and Frostivus updates contained game modes that were very time consuming to build and maintain, and would need to be rebuilt from the ground up after the release of the engine update. With Diretide this year, we decided that it didn’t make sense to build another one of those resource-intensive game modes, for two reasons. The first was that the mode would quickly become obsolete when the engine changes arrive, and the second was that building it would have taken resources away from the work that needed to be done to ship the engine change itself. Now that Frostivus is on the horizon, we find ourselves facing a similar choice and, after some thought, we believe that once again the right choice is to not develop a Frostivus game mode. This doesn’t mean that you won’t see interesting updates from us before the engine improvement goes out next year. We are already hard at work on our next major update, the New Bloom Festival in February, although we will continue to avoid building new game modes until the engine improvements come along.
Engine update? Source 2 confirmed for next year
Shame about Frostivus, but a bigger shame for those Workshop dudes who made those winter items.
Even though we didn't have Diretide this year we still had themed sets released in that treasure chest at the same time, don't count out a winter themed chest just yet.
That's unfortunate. Frostivus has been my favorite event for the past 2 years (yes, I liked the Greeviling). Last year's New Bloom Festival was really boring, so I'm not exactly looking forward to version 2 of the Year Beast...
I know I'm the minority, but I loved the Year Beast event.
I literally haven't been able to play any event yet.
I literally haven't been able to play any event yet.
youre not missing anything, the only really good event was the first diretide because rares and mythicals out the ass. Now they just throw in assloads of filler items with no purpose and 30mins-hour long bossfights.
I had fun with the Greeveling
Each event has its own charm, I don't give a shit about item drops. It's all about taking a break from regular dota and doing some dumb shit.
I hope they at least re-release the winter themed map during Christmas. And about this update, I feel like this is what Valve NEEDS to do. Not like in the past where they remained silent and it caused a wave of Give DIRETIDE. I just hope they continue to make updates like this instead of staying silent.
I know I'm the minority, but I loved the Year Beast event.
I loved abusing the visage/LD bug and farming 30$ battlefuries/shadowblades all night. Ended up making a killing on the market. Other than that, Yotb/Wraith King raid boss events are boring as fuck. Nothing will top coming up with the most cheesiest and scummy combos for Diretide.
Valve could try some multiplayer/singleplayer challenges for an event, think of dota-olympics. Maybe a bullet hell type fight with the year beast, maybe a rhythm game with invoker (invoke element instances at beats, when you complete a set he automatically invokes and casts a spell at the beast, then the next set, and you fight the beast like this), maybe several different kinds of predetermined ability draft-esque skillsets where you have to do something specific? Not grindy bossfights that take +20 minutes and are easily abuseable.
