I'd like to name my WiFi "Valve HQ" or something, is this legal?
Will Valve care?
yes
You will receive several notices from them, companies like Valve don't joke about with things like that. I did the same with my wifi, I called it "Virgin Media HQ" (ISP HQ) and apparently it was freaking people out so I received a warning else I'd be fined.
Not worth it.
This is concerning.
I really would like that name though, so I'm gonna email Gabe himself to ask him if it's ok.
I will report back when he replies.
As long as you're not hosting the network in, like, literally the same building as Valve, I don't think anyone actually gives a shit
Don't do it you'll get vac banned.
[sp]No.[/sp]
this is how the half life 2 beta got leaked
DONT DO IT
Yes, it's illegal in Germany t impersonate a person/company. Naming yourself Valve HQ would get not only you fined, but the person who pays for your internet to. If I remember correctly, it's a 200€ fine, with the possibility of jail time between 2-10 years depending on severity.
Source: I totally study law.
The SWAT team is being dispatched as we speak...
My wifi is currently called "Frat Brother Pope" but I'm thinking of renaming it "Black Mesa Northeast" or something like that.
Are you guys serious? Setting specific WiFi names is some countries is illegal? What a joke.
If you're in the U.S., you should be protected under parody/fair-use laws.

What's his email again? Can somebody explain it, specifically in song form?
-edit actually nah i think that's dumb-
if you don't live in Seatle, then no
This whole thread.
man.
I can't tell what's sarcasm and what's not anymore.
careful OP, wifi names are serious business
my network's called SkyNET and so my disk drive occasionally spits out miniature terminators
This thread reminds me of the last place I used to live at before now, one day in the first couple weeks of having moved there I opened up the list of different wifi connections and almost all of them had names like "poopoo", "fuckyou" and "orgyfan69". The neighbors were an interesting lot.
even if you live in seattle valve won't do anything; if you live downtown beside their offices then they might ask you to change it but elsewhere in the city you could just say it means something else or it's your six-year-old's juvenile nickname for their pillow fort
