Found it strange that nobody had made a thread for this game yet, so here it goes: Xenonauts is the debut title of Goldhawk Interactive and is for the most part a remake of the old X-Com games. In the game the player takes the role of a commander for an organization called "Xenonauts" formed as a reaction to an impending alien invasion. The player controls this organization through what is called the "Geosphere", a tactical map of the earth where the player can build and manage bases, attack enemy UFOs and send troops all over the world to defend it against the alien invaders. [img_thumb]http://www.xenonauts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/geoscapefull.jpg[/img_thumb] The player must also control their units movement and tactics when engaging in air to air combat and ground assault by telling their units what to fire upon and where to move. In realtime during dogfights and in a turnbased type fashion when engaging in ground fights. [img_thumb]http://www.xenonauts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/aircombat_concept.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.xenonauts.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/groundcombat_beforeafter_ind.jpg[/img_thumb] As the game progresses the situation of the Xenonauts organization and earth will become more and more dire. Some countries might be taken over by the alien invaders and lost forever, and your performance will decide how much money the countries of earth are willing to give you. Losing is a very easy in Xenonauts. Even though defending the earth alone against an overwhelming alien force might seem impossible. Your organization's highly skilled scientists and technicians will give you a fighting chance by researching and producing new technology like laser and plasma weapons, planes and tanks built with alien alloy and much more based on alien tech. [img_thumb]http://www.xenonauts.com/devimages/newUI.jpg[/img_thumb] That pretty much sums up the game though there is much more to it than I have described here. There is currently a kickstarter going for it which you can check out here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/69341191/xenonauts. It has almost reached it's goal of 50,000 in two days, which is quite impressive. There is also a very large demo out which contains almost the whole game as it is now in alpha: Torrent link: http://www.xenonauts.com/devfiles/Xenonauts_Kickstarter.torrent (Fast) Direct download link: http://gliv.es/xenonauts (Slow) More screenshots and stuff: [img_thumb]http://www.xenonauts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/xenopedia2_small.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.xenonauts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/soldierequip2_small.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://www.xenonauts.com/devimages/scientistprogression.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://www.xenonauts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/missionvictory.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://www.xenonauts.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/groundcombat_landed.jpg[/img_thumb]
Reminds me of Xcom, I loved Xcom
I think I saw a video TotalHalibut did on this a while ago. Looks really cool, definitely going to get it once it's released.
Cool, I loved the first XCOM, hope it lives up to its predecessor
I just got the time to really get into the demo. An I must say it really holds up to X-Com as a successor. The difficulty is at least as high as the previous games, just lost 5 soldiers to a camping alien because I forgot to bring enough nades. Then 7 more due to a heavy fighter shooting down my troop transport. :v:
This game is so epic, it has so much potential and the devs do a fucking great job.
Played the demo for a good couple of hours last night and this game is amazing, takes me back to my Xcom days.
Considering the development of this game started off with (imo) an absolutely terrible decision (the engine) its a vastly strong credit to Chris and Goldhawk that the game is this well even in alpha. Also to clear things the site says the game is mechanically complete but that is perhaps bad word choice.. I think he meant they have the very smallest core of the game in place which is working geoscape, air combat and ground combat together. It has said that for 1.5 years now and so much mechanics has changed and is due to change they haven't even got a proper AI in yet
I'm pretty happy with the engine progress. The only thing I'm really worried about is that it won't have as much content as I hoped. They did say that the public beta has the endgame content stripped out. But I'm still worried that it won't have as much enemy variety and tech stuff as I want it to. Hopefully, with the kickstarter complete. They can start working on some more content for it though.
There's a considerable lack of progress in the game in terms of content. Look at the XML files and note how much unfinished stuff there is. That's quite a bother to me personally.
Is there any sort of tutorial anywhere? I've not played X-COM at all so this is all rather alien (hehe) to me
There isnt... If you have Steam, Fergeh, add me, I can explain the basics as I know it so far.
There isnt... If you have Steam, Fergeh, add me, I can explain the basics as I know it so far.
Very kind of you, what is your username?
My username is the same one as on here. I'm always online, so add the StarToad that's online (Due to there being one other, Vac-banned StarToad.)
Just backed this, I just love X-com, and this is what X-com should be. Not a fps shooter.
Kicked in 20 bucks in kickstarter.
Kick starter doesn't take my card :gonk:
Looks like alots of fun, gonna keep an eye on this one.
There's a considerable lack of progress in the game in terms of content. Look at the XML files and note how much unfinished stuff there is. It's taken them three years to get to this point. There's obvious evidence that they've started labelling out some of the progression stuff (Hyperdrives and Hunter Vehicle Chassis, for example, at least, that's what comes to my mind immediately) in the XML files, but none of it has had any real additions. The devs are also aiming for a Q4 2012 release, so it's what's a bit worrying to me, due to the lack of content. I can understand bugfixes and such, those are always a very good thing to have, but they could at the very least have worked on some content between the start and the beginning of the Kickstarter.
I haven't follow development that much but even from the tip of my brain in the past few months I can remember they added: research, machinegun, new scifi weapons, new armour, manufacturing, other type of rocket launcher ammo, alien grenades, complete overhall of industry tileset, added the farm tileset, more alien types, terror missions, support aliens, medium scouts, fighters, crash sites to the actual crash sites, tail until over land, interior of UFO with revocerable artefacts, air-combat AI so they don't always retreat, the ability to save and load on geoscape, saving and loading in battlescape, overhaul chinook and ufo tiles, more props for tilesets, more submaps for tilesets and variance in thickness of smoke for explosions To say there is no progression in the content; your perception is deformed.
The Actual Engine itself is very nicely done, probably better then most other X-Com Remakes/clones (OpenXcom comes to mind for being close to it, but that's another story). Taking a Gander into the XML files reveals a ton of stuff is yet to be completed, and there's no map variety at all for crash sites. (Always the same city-esque map. Reminds me of the Terror Sites from UFO Defense, sort of.) That's the kind of content that i'm talking about. The "Meat" of the game.
I understand it looks exactly like a modernized X-COM, which I loved, but the current graphics style doesn't look too good, in my opinion.
Taking a Gander into the XML files reveals a ton of stuff is yet to be completed
That perhaps has something to do with the game being in alpha stage of development
I understand it looks exactly like a modernized X-COM, which I loved, but the current graphics style doesn't look too good, in my opinion.
The graphics look fine to me.
I really like the look of the game so far, it fits so well.
The graphics look fine to me.
While it looks right in some scenes, it looks absolutely horrible on the vehicle.
Gnnn, dat X-com feel. It's been a while.
While it looks right in some scenes, it looks absolutely horrible on the vehicle.
I disagree. The Hunter vehicle with the .50 caliber machine gun looks very cool. And having that thing tear down walls with its machine gun and rend anyone behind it feels extremely dakka. Wish you could duct tape that really durable alien alloy to the hull of the vehicle. You don't need anything fancy. Just something for it to stick and protect against the bigga shootas.
