You can fly seamlessly from the surface of a planet to another, and every star in the sky is a sun that you can visit. Explore uncharted solar systems and catalogue unique new forms of life. Every planet’s landscape is different from the next, and populated by species never before encountered. Is there a goal to the game? • There is no story and the game is about the player's individual journey throughout the universe, however there is an underlying goal to reach the center of the galaxy, as each player starts from the outskirt planets and you'll have to upgrade your ship to get there. There is also lore and an ominous "galactic menace" which haven't been revealed yet. • Procedurally generated galaxy that will feature space stations, pirates, space battles, fleets, planets with their own eco systems, wild life and weather conditions. • Realistically sized galaxy and planets. • The game will feature dogfighting with space ships, first person action, exploration, resource gathering, trading and more • AI wingmen to help you in combat situations. • You can upgrade your spacesuit, ship and weapons. Be entirely combat-focused, become a pirate who raids freighters or upgrade your gear and explore, the choice is yours! • You can go anywhere, from the nearest planets to the most distant stars and seamlessly land and explore planets' surfaces. • As you discover new planets, wild life, plants etc. you can choose to upload this information for others to see or keep the information to yourself. • Discover ancient artifacts that will reveal information about the galaxy. • Every player starts on a different planet. • To feasibly travel between solar systems, you will need a hyperdrive because the universe is so huge that you could literally drift for days.
Sean Murray (Founder of Hello Games): You can encounter other players, but the reality is that the likelihood is very tiny. What we're dealing with is planet-sized planets, so even on one planet, if million of us played, we'd still be really far apart. Scale that up to a universe and it's really unlikely that you and me are ever gonna meet. There are elements of cross-over and interaction from other players, but that's not what this game is about. We're the opposite of an MMO, we're taking all the players at play and flinging them across the universe.
Q: In the trailer we saw that when you flew to a planet where another player has been to, you see who discovered that planet first. What else can players discover?
SM: You get to discover not just planets, but lakes, mountains, rivers, resources, aswell as space stations and trading routes et cetera. You can then choose to upload this information or keep it to yourself. As the first people start the game, they'll open the map and it will show every planet and star, but as you zoom in it will just say "Unknown". As more and more people play, they'll gradually start to fill in all the information.
Q: All of the planets obey their natural laws, so what can we expect when visiting these planets?
SM: In terms of ecology, almost everything is possible, the type of creatures you see, the environments you visit, even we don't know what's out there. It's not random or chaotic, but it's procedural.
Q: You take certain laws of the universe into effect, so if a planet is too close to the sun, there's no life there, there may be liquid but not water, things like that?
SM: Yeah. The way we build worlds is by these simple rules. Water creates atmosphere, contents of the water affects the moisture that's in the atmosphere and that might change the color of the sky, which will determine the kind of weather and life grows there.
(Source)
I loved this, really reminds me of GOF2 in terms of general space ship design and dogfighting, but unlike GOF2 you can walk on the planets.
i've said it before and i'll say it again, i remain sadly skeptical of complete procedural generation, quoting starbound as a source. maybe you'll see new creatures for a while but eventually you're either going to start seeing clones or patterns.
Now I hope this is the case... I really do and I've not seen a really good space game in recent days that'll let me do it but... Can I get my hands on a fuckoff big battleship? Like really, so many MANY space sim games don't let you do this.. at best you get a largeish frigate that still plays like a fighter. I Want to be in command of the battle star, launch the fighters and engage the port cannons! Take orbit around a planet and launch landing craft from my mobile star fortress thingy, that sorta stuff.
Really skeptical but could be pretty great.
Can't wait to see more about this game, but at the moment it sounds to good to be true and most of the times its is just that, to good to be true.
Well those devs made Joe Danger which is a great game. I highly doubt it's gonna be as amazing as it sounds, but there's high chance it's gonna be very fun regardless.
pc was confirmed? wikipedia says just ps4 so far
The graphical style is really easy on the eyes. What is the goal of the game? To survive?
Not much has been revealed yet, but the devs are emphasizing that the main goal is exploration. There's also no story to speak of, but rather the journey that the players go through themselves as they discover the galaxy. In an interview they revealed however that there will be some galactic menace, but they won't talk about it yet.
pc was confirmed? wikipedia says just ps4 so far
PC is confirmed. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/06/09/no-man-s-sky-coming-to-playstation-4.aspx?CommentPosted=true#commentmessage
Today’s E3 press conference brought the news that No Man’s Sky will be playable on PlayStation 4 in addition to its formerly announced appearance on PC.
Which makes sense, since the devs have talked about Rift support. It was also announced for Morpheus. Honestly, I hope there's some level of base building. I know they're taking the Journey route with multiplayer, but I wouldn't mind being able to establish a research base on some far-flung moon with a few buddies.
Aren't they releasing on PS4 first then PC? Vaguely remember reading that somewhere.
Aren't they releasing on PS4 first then PC? Vaguely remember reading that somewhere.
Yeah that's what I keep hearing aswell.
i've said it before and i'll say it again, i remain sadly skeptical of complete procedural generation, quoting starbound as a source. maybe you'll see new creatures for a while but eventually you're either going to start seeing clones or patterns.
I share your concern, but really it's too early to say because we don't know anything about their tech yet. See this interview where Sean Murray, one of the devs explains the process.
The graphical style actually looks quite a lot like Wildstar.
I would imagine that after awhile the creatures and planets would begin to look the same, but with friends there is possibility for a lot of fun.
Playing with friends will be tricky, since everyone starts off from a different planet and you'll literally be light years apart. So it could take awhile before you actually get to meet any of your friends, not before you get your hyperdrive atleast.
Didn't this studio get hit by a flood and lost a bunch of progress?
Didn't this studio get hit by a flood and lost a bunch of progress?
Yes, basically their whole studio was destroyed. Polygon did a story on it.
Would be nice if they could get this on Xbone and Wii U; maybe even some previous gen consoles
I wonder if this will have oculus rift compatibility.
Yes, basically their whole studio was destroyed. Polygon did a story on it.
that was depressing to read. imagine losing most of your stuff to something as unexpected as that then knowing there was nothing you could do to stop it. computers, TVs, his console collection, all gone. personal memories and years of artwork, that's really depressing. my SSD "died" earlier too (as far as I know), and after reading that I really think I'm going to invest in a second HDD or a cloud solution to back up stuff I need.
I'm too scared to get excited. Ive been hurt by games before
I feel the same but at the same time, a break from "SURVIVE, BUILD, SURVIVE MORE!!" would be a nice touch. But then again, exploration can really only do so much. Have they hinted toward a 2015 release? I mean exactly how far is this game along?
Honestly, I'd be happy if I could just build things. Don't worry too much about resource harvesting or survival or any of that, I just want to fly out to some desert planet or chunk of ice out in space, set up a little research base, and "live" there. There are other ways to break the tradition of "Mine, Build, Survive" than removing the only tools we have to make an impact on the game. Then again, in games like this, I sort of prefer to RP a bit and make my own game. It definitely seems open ended enough, I think being able to beam in a set of pre-made buildings would be right at home. Of course, I also wouldn't mind if they took a path similar to Rust, but with less box huts.
Remind me again why everyone loved this? It's just another sandbox survival game with some flashy effects and spaceship fighting.
I wonder if this will have oculus rift compatibility.
Pretty sure it will.
How is it some "another" survival game? Just look at it, it's completely different than those "generic indie early-access survival crafting build simulator!!" Did you even watch the videos? It looks stunning graphically. Very colorful and easy on the eyes. We don't know much about it yet, it's way to early to declare anything. But I'm optimistic about it.
You can paint a turd gold but it's still a turd on the inside. I'm hoping this game does prove me wrong in every way though.
Honestly, I'll be happy if it just looks nice. If it turns out like another Dear Esther, something to show off and look pretty, I'll probably buy it. Especially if it looks good enough in VR. Just forget the game elements, it's the perfect virtual environment simulator.
This is one of the few games I'm genuinely hyped for. The trailer by proxy introduced me to an awesome band too:
I was a little iffy on getting a PS4 just for Destiny but seeing this game for first time at E3 really made me sure. Even if it is just a another game of its genre I haven't seen one done in a really cool sci-fi style. That appeals to me much more than forests and primitive huts ever could. I am so ready for this game.
Remind me again why everyone loved this? It's just another sandbox survival game with some flashy effects and spaceship fighting.
Yeah it's yet another game where you get to explore an uncharted procedurally generated galaxy and fly seamlessly from planet to planet in your customized spaceship. Because we've seen it all before, right?
You can paint a turd gold but it's still a turd on the inside. I'm hoping this game does prove me wrong in every way though.
Man you must be a real fun guy to hang out with, huh?
