What is it?
Starfighter INC is a work in progress space combat simulator, being developed by the former developers of the XWing, TIE Fighter, and XWing vs TIE Fighter games under the name Impeller Studios. They also have former developers of the Crysis series and Desert Combat. The game is intended to be a PvP multiplayer experience, focusing on physics based space combat in a hardcore simulator environment.

More about the Gameplay
The game is intended to be a skill based space combat simulator with high speed and destruction in the vein of the dogfighting seen in StarWars. Players will be able to test their mettle as lone pilots, or band together for team based cooperation. Impeller Studios background with the Mechwarrior series also shows in Starfighter, with fully customisable ships, allowing for both aesthetic and functional changes to spacecraft.

The focus on realistic space simulation will lend itself to both functional and aesthetic aspects of gameplay. Given the frictionless vacuum of space, players will be able to perform high speed manoeuvres not achievable in atmospheric combat. The space environment will also have an effect upon the immersiveness of the the player's cockpit, with realistic sound design employed to make the player feel as if they're piloting the craft. The pilot's breathing, the sound of the cockpits instruments, the muffled shockwaves of nearby explosions: all designed to create an immersive and believable space environment.

This looks badass. More space games!
Another game that'll release before Star Citizen gets into beta.
I don't care how many crowd funded space sims there are/will be, bring em all on.
another very promising space game campaign and it may again not be funded ...
we lost already
Nexus 2 (twice)
Shallow Space (once)

The last message was posted in November last year. Did the developer die in a car crash?

He's still working on it. It's taken longer than expected because he changed what he wanted to count as the base game to something more comprehensive than the arcade game. The gameplay is still the same, but the art has been completely redone and the game now has a procedurally generated campaign.
From what I understand, he's mostly doing polish (interface, readability, controls, etc.) at this point. The last I heard from him on Twitter, he had just converted the game to Unity 5.
yeah, he did a small stream a few months back and the game looks totally different. it went from that really basic homeworld look to having a lot more visual fidelity to it. it still has the flashy homeworld colors but the ships have went from basic shapes to having really detailed models. pretty much went from homeworld to homeworld remastered in terms of visual fidelity
It seems quite unlikely that this will reach its goal. What they have shown looks quite good and the idea is great, but i think the Kickstarter hasn't been handled too well, especially those Stretch Goals - Even if it was very successful it probably wouldn't have got past the 2nd goal. The base goal seems quite limited as well, if it had included the content from the "Big Multiplayer Experience" goal as part of the base game that would have been far better.
That it would have required them to be one of the highest funded Kickstarters of all time to reach all the stretch goals should have been enough to show they were asking for far too much.
