The game is currently playable on PC and Linux, but is planned to be released on Steam at some point.
My goal with this game is to combine elements from my favorite genres and games without losing what makes them unique. The complex interactions of a roguelike, the fun beat 'em up action from games like The Punisher and X-Men, and the exploration from games like Zelda. All while keeping the core game simple and intuitive. You can interact with almost every object in the environment, and you must use them in creative ways to stay alive.
Online cooperative gameplay: Team up and take on the dungeon with up to 15 of your friends! The game is primarily balanced for 1 to 4 players but will dynamically change to suit how many people you bring on your journey. 2 to 4 Player offline split screen: The return of the couch co-op experience! Team up with up to 4 players locally, and re-live the days long past. Requires 4 controllers. ( Note: Split screen is currently windows only but is planned for linux ) Real time combat inspired by Zelda & beat 'em up games: Hack slash and charge your way through your enemies! You can pick up almost every object in the world and beat monsters over the head with it. You can also throw objects from afar in classic beat 'em up fashion! Boss fights inspired by classic games: Lots of fun bosses to fight with your friends, inspired by classic NES & SNES boss fights! Permadeath: Death is the end and there is no coming back! Even in co-op, once the last player dies you can never return to the same dungeon again. But don't worry you can revive your teammates by carrying their corpse down the ladder, or finding powerful magic. If you fail they'll be trapped in a coffin on the next floor. Procedural dungeons & randomized items: Every time you play it's a new experience! The dungeons are procedurally generated, the items and monsters are randomly placed. On top of that each time you play you'll have to figure out what each magical potion and scroll does! Custom characters & skinning system: You can easily create your own character using the in game character editor. It'll even be sent over the network so other players can view it! The entire dungeon, monsters, and items are all reskinnable as well. Each model is simply a 2D PNG sprite file easily editable by most programs. Voxel art style, destruction, & physics: The look of the game is inspired by one of Rotondo's favorite games '3D Dot Game Heroes'. Almost every object in the dungeon can be destroyed, and pixel debris are physically simulated for more fun. Honestly this looks pretty okay, I got a laugh out of that "take THIS" gag :v: Wish he woulda used different sprites rather than those generic chunky sprites you see in a shitload of games of this genre
Honestly this looks pretty okay, I got a laugh out of that "take THIS" gag :v: Wish he woulda used different sprites rather than those generic chunky sprites you see in a shitload of games of this genre
Honestly they just kind of came out similar to the general oryx/RotMG set, I'm working with 8x8 pixels so I guess it's just a side effect. I might change them in the future but I'm not sure yet. Though the entire game is customizable so you can change it to whatever you want once the game is released, but it'll still be limited to a low sprite size. You can see some of the characters people made here, ---- Anyway, I'm the developer of the game so if you guys have any questions feel free to ask. Also thanks for making the post Masterlegodude.

I just wanna say gameplay wise this is looking rock solid so far, I love being able to pick up and throw things. Adds a lot of much needed mayhem to combat. Can you pick up and chuck enemies too?

So I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. Yeah you can, you can also pick up the dead monsters and beat other monsters over the head with their corpse. I should really make a gif showing the interactions that can happen, but for now picture this rock in the second part as a dead monster. Another cool thing that adds more crazyness to the game, is if an enemy has a special ability like freezing when you throw that monster whatever you hit will be frozen. I should also probably make a gif showing that off as well lol... Edit: unrelated to this thread was there a great post purging at some point? I've had this account for years but I don't seem to have any posts anymore. I swear I made more than that 1 post about blockland.
I won't quote that big post but that's fucking awesome Rotondo. I saw a video of some guys playing it and I noticed there's a boomerang you can pick up and throw, but it's not an actual subweapon. Got anything planned for reusable subweapons? Maybe a hookshot or a subweapon variant of a boomerang?
wait wait wait, are you Rotondo that made some Blockland add-ons back in the day? If so, then holy shit that's awesome. The game looks interesting - it reminds me of Hammerwatch which I completed with my friend and we had a blast, so we'll definitely try this game out once we'll have some money. Looking forward to seeing the development progess!

Not only that but if you drop it the enemies can use it against you. I definitely want to do something like the hookshot or even the pegasus boots. I actually already have two feather items in game now, one that gives you a links awakening style hop, the other gives you a demons souls style roll dodge. Thanks I'm happy you like it. ---- The kickstarter is doing really well, we're already 90% funded as of now and it's only been 8 days. I also made this gif for you guys, People have been getting a kick out of the in game letters, a few youtubers have already spelt out some funny things with them lol.
Yeah. I saw your modest kickstarter goal is already nearly met. I feel like this game deserves it, I noticed you've also added magic staves to the game. You could always add a cane of Bryna item too, summoning blocks to stop projectiles or to pick up and throw at dudes can be fun too. Any plans for rare one of a kind weapon types?
Nice. That would be an awesome item to add, you could use it to not only drop blocks on enemies heads but you could also push them around or pick them up. It might even be really cool to be able to use them as a way to get across pits. I'll definitely write that one down. Right now there's only normal version of weapons but I was thinking of adding a few modifiers into the mix, for instance weapons could have a rare chance to get ice or fire effects. Edit: You guys should check out this video the mindcrack guys put up if you want to see the game in action. You can also see things from the other players perspectives here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dk7wN11qa4 It's interesting because at one point he gets high on shrooms then tries to convey what's happening to the others lol. Edit 2: Put up an update showing off an idea I had for the in-game Kickstarter credits, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/posts/1391885
Ah, I've enjoyed watching this grow, glad to see you reaching your goal Rot! :)
Backed it, looking forward to splitscreening the hell out of this with my friends. [editline]23rd October 2015[/editline] Also out of curiosity, do you think it'd be possible to do dual-monitor splits similarly to how Black Ops 3 is going to, where you have one screen on one monitor and another on another but one machine doing everything? I've got three screens in my room and while everyone crowding around one screen would work fine, I'd rather it not be so crowded and leaving people at bad angles, etc. Just a suggestion if it's totally feasible [editline]23rd October 2015[/editline] B/c either way this game looks :incredible:

I started with just doing separate game instances entirely, and I've been slowing making it work from within one window. So yeah you can already do split screen that way, though I do still have to make a nice GUI to allow you to customize exactly how you want the split screen to go. ---- Today we are only 382 dollars away from hitting the goal! It's pretty exciting, it's especially awesome that this has all been through word of mouth, reddit, or youtubers.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/description The Kickstarter made the goal, woo! Just backed $24, this game looks great.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/description The Kickstarter made the goal, woo! Just backed $24, this game looks great.
Thanks so much for backing!
I quite like the look of the game, but I think the biggest thing that irks me is the flatness of the characters. I like a voxel aesthetic when the characters are a bit more volumetric. I think the thing about the characters is that because they're so flat when viewed from the side they're basically just a line of color and it's hard to make out what it's supposed to be from that angle. It isn't too bad, and I understand that one would want to keep it as simple as possible to edit. But, it'd be nice if the characters were thickened by a layer or two, especially the player and anything larger than them. If that were to happen, I'd especially like it if we were allowed to edit each layer, so we could really bring out the depth of our 3D characters. otherwise I quite like it and I especially like that this game wholeheartedly embraces custom player skins and game texture skinning, it's one of my favorite things to do when customizing any game.
Thanks for the post, right now the in game editor only supports one layer but the actual sprites in game support one additional depth layer. You can see the bosses and a few enemies have more depth to them. Eventually I'd love to add an option for full on voxel models but this will come later. ---- So we got funded! I also updated the stretch goals after rethinking them, you can see more about the update here https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/posts/1394984 It's been a crazy ride so far but we're only about halfway through, thank you for all your support guys.
I fucking love Blockland, had it for years now. And this game is looking awesome, so I'll be sure to drop some money on this. You guys gave me so many great memories with BL that I have no problem supporting your project.

It's crazy thinking how long Blockland has been around for. Today's been a good day for the kickstarter, someone posted the game to r/indiegaming and it got a pretty big boost in views and pledges.
One thing that bothers me is that Blockland is essentially dead since FTB was shut down :(
We got really lucky over the weekend this gif, Went viral, racked up 550,000 views! The Kickstarter went up over 1700 dollars in one day, it looks like we have a good shot at hitting the MAC & Deathmatch goal. I made an update on the kickstarter talking about the history of the game a bit, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/posts/1398568 I also added a PayPal option to the kickstarter if you guys were waiting for that. In other mysterious news we got a surge of views from Europe Saturday, I have no idea from where as it was all from people googling with "unknown keywords".
Just hit the 48 hour mark, wanted to give you guys a final update. Sorry for the double post. We hit the MAC & DM stretch goal a little while ago, We also got to the front page of PC Master Race with this gif, http://i.imgur.com/q9Wx26I.gifv I'd embed it but it's pretty big, we're at over 1,500,000 views on the 3 gifs of the game. That's also just counting when the images was hosted on imgur, they also got cross posted to 9gag and funny junk. Thanks again for all your support guys, it really means a lot. Here's the links to the updates you guys may have missed, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/posts/1403697 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/posts/1407301 https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rotondo/forgettabledungeon/posts/1407617
