The game begins in a Boston quarantine zone twenty years after the initial plague. The 14-year-old orphan Ellie, lives in a strict boarding house, and Joel, who is a black market dealer within the quarantine zone, sells weapons and drugs. An unknown event then occurs where Joel makes a promise to a dying friend that he will protect Ellie and help her escape. As they both make their way out of the quarantine zone with their lives, the game then starts to play throughout areas across the United States, including a now post-apocalyptic Pittsburgh and other locations reclaimed by nature. Evidently, things take a turn for the worse, as the military quickly finds out about their escape and begins pursuing them. After a nearby safe haven fails to work out, Joel and Ellie continue their venture across the United States, and their dire attempts to escape from law enforcement begins to unfold. Along the way, the duo must also overcome countless hostiles, ranging from infected enemies to hunters and enemy survivors. It is also suggested that survival will involve both killing and scavenging. Gameplay Mechanics: The player will take control of Joel, while Ellie will be controlled by Artificial Intelligence (She will assist Joel when needed). The game will involve gunfighting with a cover system, melee combat, and platforming. It has been suggested by developers of the game that using cover may be vital for the player to stay alive and maneuver around enemies without alarming them. In the demo Joel and Ellie enter a flooded hotel where they hear other people, at which point Joel’s ammo and health appear, showing four bullets in his revolver. Joel's limited number of rounds also suggests that supplies will be limited, a typical mechanic in end-of-the-world games. He and Ellie quickly go into cover, a violent fight ensues, taking the player through several areas of the hotel while showing the different styles of fighting and weaponry in the game. The hand-to-hand combat fighting mechanic is brutally detailed and realistic, as seen in the stage demo gameplay Joel puts a man in a rear naked choke hold knocking him unconscious, taking his revolver ammo. Artificial intelligence is shown for other human survivors as he is adding the stolen ammo to his revolver, Someone sees him and he is forced to engage in a gun-fight with several enemies of the same group. Later in the fight the player runs out of ammo and an enemy recognizes the dry-fire of Joel's empty revolver. Which shows off the weapon mechanics and AI. An inventory system and crafting mechanics were also demonstrated in the demo from which Joel grabs alcohol from his backpack, combines it with a cloth and sets it on fire with a lighter, to use offensively against other enemies. There will also be somewhat limited platforming involved in this game, typical in Naughty Dog titles. Except with platforming in this game, everything is always randomly generated. For instance, in the demo when Joel climbs up the ladder, sometimes that ladder does not spawn and you have to either get ellie up there to find something for you to stand on to get up there, or you can find other objects in the environment and pick them up and put them in the specified area so you are allowed to jump onto the scaffold/landing. This mechanic works the same way with enemies. Sometimes specific enemies don't spawn, or go in other directions and investigate/search other areas. Development: The game was first teased before the Spike Video Game Awards on November 29, 2011, with a billboard in Times Square mentioning "a PS3 exclusive you won't believe". Initial trailers showed an apocalyptic event, including riots, epidemic, quarantine, and violence, as well as a clip of the BBC's Planet Earth showing an ant infected with Cordyceps unilateralis, a dangerous parasitic fungus that usually kills insects such as ants. On December 9, players of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception spotted an in-game reference to the aforementioned trailer with the newspaper headline "scientists are still struggling to understand deadly fungus". At the Spike Video Game Awards, Sony officially unveiled the game, a brand new intellectual property from Naughty Dog, created by a previously unpublicized 80-person Naughty Dog development team. A gameplay trailer, made up of in-engine footage, showed a man and a teenage girl fending off other survivors and what appeared to be people with unusual fungal growth, before running out into a dilapidated city covered in greenery, reminiscent of the film I Am Legend. Shortly after the unveiling, Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells posted on the PlayStation Blog new The Last of Us details: "The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States." The announcement confirmed that the new project is being headed by studio game director Bruce Straley. Former lead designer on Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Mark Richard Davies has been working at Naughty Dog on the game. After Uncharted 2: Among Thieves shipped in 2009, some of the development team from the game formed the team for The Last of Us, while the remainder worked on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. The Last of Us marks the first time that Naughty Dog has become a two-team studio. It is also the first time the studio has introduced a second new IP in the same hardware generation. A gameplay by the developers was shown at the E3 2012, showing us the stealth and confrontations we will have to survive in-game. Concept: The concept for The Last of Us arose after watching BBC nature documentary Planet Earth, which showed the cordyceps fungus-infected ants, resulting in taking over its brain and controlling it's body while producing growths from its head. The idea that the fungus could infect humans became the initial idea for the game. In a recent interview with developers of the game, one of them said "While the fungus epidemic is the main backdrop of the game, The Last of Us is not a 'zombie game', but a story about a father-daughter-like relationship". In the same interview, it was also stated that the video game was influenced and inspired by the movies No Country for Old Men and The Road, the comics The Walking Dead, historical novel City of Thieves, Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend and the I Am Legend films. The composer for the game will be Gustavo Santaolalla. The team wanted to focus on emotion with the soundtrack rather than horror. On release of the initial trailer for the game Dead Island, the team was concerned that the two games would be largely similar, both exploring the human or emotional side to an apocalyptic event. However, on release of the aforementioned game, the team realized that the gameplay did not match up to that showed by the trailer. By contrast, lead designer Neil Druckmann feels that the trailer for The Last of Us is "very representative of what we're going for". Druckmann also stated that he wants the story in The Last of Us to raise the bar for other video game developers, as he feels the standard of storytelling is not as good as it should be within the industry. I can't stop calling this game "I Am Alive" when I talk to people about it. oh yeah you used my brick to face gif
Looks really neat. It reminds me a lot of the movie "the Road".
Looks really neat. It reminds me a lot of the movie "the Road".
It was actually inspired by that movie, and the I Am Legend novel.
Honestly, this looks really neat. At first I was sceptical and all. But the conversations between the guy and the girl is really well done. Also like she freaks out when he is using the molotov. The fights seem also pretty intense. The visuals are really beautiful, like the animations. The only thing is disliked is that it looked really linear, like at first when they move to the appartement, some larger areas would totally fit the game. Also the shooting needs some improvement, but all in all. I am really following this. Close quarter combat looks brutal.
That gameplay looked really good. I'm not sure if everything was just scripted or if the AI is really good. I hope the latter.
Lol, I just noticed that the game has infected people :v: Also I just wonder if those conversations are dynamic and change depending on the situation, because if it is heavily scripted, it would take out a lot of the atmosphere. [editline]10th June 2012[/editline] What? A ps3 exclusive, what the fork :(
I love how the infected guys aren't your run of the mill 28 Days Later zombies. They look fucking scary.
So many great games coming up... I'm sorry, purse.
Is this still a PS3 exclusive?
it's a naughty dog game, of course it's gonna be a ps3 exclusive considering naughty dog is a sony-owned company.
This being an exclusive I'm okay with, well, because I have a PS3 :v:, I honestly can't wait.
What the ellen page
This game looks so fucking great. Thank God I bought a PS3. I'm going to be picking up the Uncharted series soon, as I haven't played a Naughty Dog game since Jak 3. It's going to be interesting to see how they evolved over time.
I might just buy a PS3 for this.
That gameplay looked really good. I'm not sure if everything was just scripted or if the AI is really good. I hope the latter.
There's a video around somewhere where a dev explains (to an obnoxious interviewer who interrupts him all the time) how the AI has a large set of different behaviours which are triggered by a variety of variables which the game checks constantly, such as your health, your equipment, ammo, the nature of your surroundings, your and the girl's position, etc. This is how stuff like the girl throwing the block happens, or how the one dude first tries to talk to the player for an instant when he holds that other dude hostage, but then when the player aims at him goes "fuck this" and dives for cover. [editline]10th June 2012[/editline]
I might just buy a PS3 for this.
I bought a PS3 for GTA IV. [editline]10th June 2012[/editline] Then sold it along with my 40 inch TV when I emigrated to the canary islands. [editline]10th June 2012[/editline] Guess next year I'll be buying another PS3 and a new TV.. (my pc monitor has only got a VGA in)
I'm really interested in how the relationship between weapon dealer guy and that girl will feel in the game. Hope the player grows to actually care for her saftey instead of being annoyed of some brat he/she has to protect.
This looks amazing, sadly i don't have a ps3, as with some other people in this thread, i might just buy a one for this game. also little big planet because it looks fun as hell
I read about this awhile ago, but now that I'm actually looking at it I think I might just have to buy it.
I like the fungus on the head of the infected :v:
Why did they make the girl basically a super-attractive woman that has been shrunken to child-seize they even gave her womanly hips and super seductive lips what is wrong with these people?
naughtydog's doing an M-17 game for once after uncharted? yesssss
Why did they make the girl basically a super-attractive woman that has been shrunken to child-seize they even gave her womanly hips and super seductive lips what is wrong with these people?
She just looks like a short 14-15 year old to me.
I wish this wasn't on the one console I don't regrettably have. This looks so damn good. Reminds me a little bit of Condemned Criminal Origins, for some reason. [editline]10th June 2012[/editline] Don't put so many gifs in the main post christ
Why did they make the girl basically a super-attractive woman that has been shrunken to child-seize they even gave her womanly hips and super seductive lips what is wrong with these people?
Super attractive? She's just a kid. Give her a few years and then start complaining about her looks. Anyway, I'm liking the looks of this game. It was one of the things that caught my eye during E3.
Why did they make the girl basically a super-attractive woman that has been shrunken to child-seize they even gave her womanly hips and super seductive lips what is wrong with these people?
At least they didn't add boobs.
They said that the gameplay wasn't scripted in the E3 demo, for those that were wondering about scripted a.i.
Don't put so many gifs in the main post christ
It's his thread, he can put as many gifs in it as he wants.
Looking at it some more, the game looks like something I'd be really interested in. Haven't seen a decent survival game for ages, just action malarkey posing as survival. [editline]11th June 2012[/editline]
Why did they make the girl basically a super-attractive woman that has been shrunken to child-seize they even gave her womanly hips and super seductive lips what is wrong with these people?
Super seductive lips you say? Don't get a boner now.
