Ryzom is a french MMORPG that was released back in '04 a month or two before World of Warcraft, which gave it kind of a rough start. That's why you never heard of it. The game takes place on a small living planet called Atys on which four humanoid races are struggling for survival against a horde of giant bugs known as the Kitin. I've been playing this game for eight years and it's the most unique and sandboxy MMORPG I've ever played. This week (monday/tuesday) they are merging the three remaining servers (wiping all guilds, items and re-balancing the broken economy) and are going to re-run some great events that originally ran during the game's prime-time back in '05-'06, e.i. this the perfect time to check it out!
Homin (Playable Races)
Tryker "Shorter of stature then other Homin races, The Tryker have retained their flighty and carefree nature despite the events of the past. Excellent explorers and inventors, as well as experts in wind technology, the Tryker have built their new civilization in marvelous floating cities of the lakelands, dreaming of a world without the burdens of tyranny or intolerance. In their penchant for conservationism, the Tryker have also developed the technique of water purification, and they continue to look on water not only for its biological value, but seek to use it for energetic ends." Matis "The Matis are proud heirs of an old Monarchy from the haunted woods who seek to restore their lost Kingdom. Highly cultivated aesthetes well versed in forest botany, the Matis are both a romantic and a conquering race. They staunchly believe that, just as every particle of the universe has a function, every homin must strive for his or her true place in society." Zoraï "The Zoraï'i are feared mystics from the dark and hidden jungles who zealously serve the living planet. In their search for spiritual enlightenment, the Zoraï'i have grown close to the mysterious Kami. Since the devastating swarming of kitins, the Zoraï have once again expressly chosen their new sites in the middle of the enchanting jungle where pollution of the Goo is rife. Now they seek to recover the magnificence of their former dynasty and make it shine as a beacon of wisdom. They are keen to share spiritual awareness throughout the world so that all hominkind may attain eternal bliss." Fyros "The Fyros are a bold warrior civilisation, who value above all truth, honesty, and discipline. Determined, loyal and fierce; the Fyros rank themselves among the greatest Atysian warriors; priding themselves on the hardiness they display by choosing the tough life of a desert people. The Fyros are also dedicated to discovering the truth about the Great Dragon of Myth - much to the ire of the Karavan. However, despite their honourable intentions, the uncompromising nature of the battle-loving Fyros can lead to them being seen as brutish and wilful."
Factions
Kami "Strange and eerie entities capable of taking on various appearances, the Kamis constitute a major influence on Atys and its habitants. They stand vigil over the plant kingdom and ensure that no one may destabilize the fragile equilibrium of the planet they cherish. They share a collective consciousness and it would seem that no living species may escape their perception, and consequently, their wrath if their laws of conservation are transgressed. Like the Karavan, the Kamis travel freely through the lands of Atys keeping endless watch and endeavoring to make pacts with laudable homins in exchange for deeds done." Karavan "Karavan is composed of mysterious anthropoid beings in black suits and helmets that cover their entire heads. With the exception of the Prime Roots, the Karavan is present throughout Atys. Indeed, the homins have never yet explored an area where Karavan presence is not felt. The members of the Karavan live in great metallic vehicles and use weapons of technology as yet unknown to hominkind. The homins mostly hold them in awe."
Features
Open skilltree -Four basic skills. I got to test this as well. Pay per month bother me through but they have to get money somehow. Nothing I can afford now trough. That sand box thing sounds interesting. This is like the second open source MMORPG I know of, or third. Others are Planeshift, that is shit; and WorldForge, that looks like shit

I remember I used to play this a long time ago. I was stuck on the beginner world because you had to pay to go anywhere else. It was pretty fun

Stop it.
I'm confused but interested, the trial sounds awesome,I might try it out. Also,do we have a "that homin" going on or something?
I tried this back in 04. Was terrible.
So let me get this straight - it's open source, but subscription based?
Some of the great changes after the merge; -The currency is actually worth something now -A lot more events -Almost all areas are populated -The 2x xp for subscribers makes to go solo a viable option -A great opportunity to learn french! And the backside of the merge; -The French really doesn't know how to speak English -Veterans are complaining that they can't get all the money they'll ever need by hunting 20 minutes every month -Still three different communities
So let me get this straight - it's open source, but subscription based?
Yeah, the open source-part doesn't contain any world data. If someone had the time and knowledge they could recreate all of it though.
