ff7 is one of the greatest stories ever told in a video game.
Final Fantasy VII is a thing of its time. A personal story about revenge and indirectly maybe saving the world if it succeeds, that turns into a search for identity and confirmation and the conflict within oneself. Steampunk, dieselpunk, fantasy and 90's technology at complete random mixtures, horror-like elements strewn about while an evil corporation does dickish things, goofy humor randomly pervades the scenes combined with a flagrant disregard for the laws of physics just because rather than for rule of cool, and a generally bleak storyline overall that has strong hints of idealism nonetheless.
I won't say the game has no flaws, and there's a reason why people debate which games were better seeing as pretty much every Final Fantasy is radically different in world and story from eachother (and sometimes gameplay too) so I can't honestly say it's the best game or best story ever. But for what it does, a person can't really say FFVII sucks objectively.
they all look so gross. I miss my chibi anime kawaii cloud and his more flattering weaboo avatar image

It's not even the greatest story told in the FF series.
Cloud gameplay looks like MGR:R

It certainly won't play like it, though.
Maybe because fans have been clamoring for one for quite some time now? Plus they get to rake in the dosh.
