We had a little contest for this game a while back in AA. No prizes, just bragging rights. :v:

oh god I am so buying this
I just want the devs to optimise the game when it's officially released, just lags quite badly on my laptop even though it seems like there's not much going on onscreen. :/
Runs fine on my desktop. Just busted out a gigantic turboed L4 making 700hp on 91 octane. :v:

Yeah, it's a bit slow on low end hardware at the moment. You'll get the most performance increase by turning off SSAO and making sure the quality slider is one notch below the top settings (the highest settings on the slider only JUST run ok on my ATI 7970..)
We're looking into getting some performance optimization consultant friends to have a bash at it too, as there are lots of areas that could be tweaked to get some more frame rate out of it.
Also, we've got a kind of quick fire "Engine Challenge" multiplayer mode on the way
I'm the Lead Artist and one of the founders of the project btw, so happy to answer any questions folks have :)
first time i played automation, i made a really decent engine just by clicking on random shit, but now it seems when i use my brain i cant make anything that runs over 4000 rpm
I've just realised the game calls for a quad core processor on the recommended specs, must be the reason why it runs slow on my i7-620m as its only dual core and I know that SSAO is a bitch for any system, especially on mobile graphics :v:
aplogies for dodgy posting, its 2am and im quite tired

Yeah, it got a lot more challenging when we rebalanced it to fix some realism issues.
Dual core isn't a huge problem, it'll be the graphics card that lets it down. What card are you on?
it's a geforce gt330m running on 188.80 (cant update the drivers)
Ahh yeah, that's down the lower end of what Automation is happy with. It runs well on medium - highish settings on a GT650M for example.
so for someone who knows nothing about cars, would this be easy to play? much like how kerbal space program needs almost no knowledge about rockets?
so for someone who knows nothing about cars, would this be easy to play? much like how kerbal space program needs almost no knowledge about rockets?
It's aimed to be playable be anyone who cares about cars and wants to learn about them, but you'll have to be willing to watch a bunch of the tutorial videos and read some of the part descriptions as you design stuff. Try the free demo if you're wondering!
TL;DR: You do need to know about cars, but the game will teach you :)
ah, alright. ill have a look!

Quick question, do you know why they changed that year slider to quality?
Quick question, do you know why they changed that year slider to quality?
Yeah, we did that A: because people found the year thing a bit confusing. and B: because we did a big rework of how quality/year affected the stats of the part in question, and part of that was limiting it to + or - 15 years "worth of tech". It'll also start to make way more sense once you start actually having factories and that sort of thing too.
Have been playing the demo all evening in sandbox mode - great stuff.
Just completed the "Brutal" 4-cyl challenge, it really made me examine my design and tuning choices. Succeeded on Silver with 1137 points; I have no idea where I will find the next 10 points for Gold level.
Also built myself a pretty nifty 2.6L twincam naturally aspirated four touring car engine, pretty heavily modeled on BMW S14 EVO architecture, with a tad more bore and stroke (95mm x 87.5mm). 420 crank HP at 8200 RPM. Built a 2.0L M10 too, just for the fun of it.
Fun game!
Is there any chance you might eventually be able to drive the cars as well, or is that entirely out of your scope?

I remember this discussion before, and they said they only wanted to do it if they could get decent physics into it.
Here's the best i could muster up.

Yep, only if we could licence some full on driving simulator. We might look at making an exporter to rFactor 2 or something for cars though, but even that's not going to happen until at least the base game is done :)
any chance of diesel or 2-stroke designs in the future?

Diesels are very likely as DLC, as they're super important.
2 Strokes are frankly more of a novelty.
I've only got the demo, so I only get to play with the Inline 4s, but making a 5.7L I4 with 770hp is incredibly very fun.
This game will have my buy, it's incredibly awesome.

I wouldn't be all that let down by exclusion of 2-stroke engines but I wouldn't call them a novelty. They're fantastic engines where cost matters, and in cost-insensitive applications can provide a very high power-to-weight ratio.

Export to RF2 would be freaking awesome. Freaking.
Wow, this looks like Street Legal Racing: Redline but not buggy as hell incarnate

SLR:R was still fun though

Yeah, they'd make it in for sure if you were making a lot of smaller things like motorcycles, jetskis, that kind of things. Our lead programmer had an RG250, and that thing was a freaking rocketship (over about a 2000rpm band, with a huge smoke screen covering it's escape)
They've only really found applications in a few cars though (off the top of my head, a few Saabs, Trabant, Gogomobil Dart). They could be interesting to play with, but as they're just as much work as diesels really, however used far far less they're a pretty low priority.
Hope that helps explain our thinking on this point.

Kinda, only with less racing and more car company running, plus a fair bit more technical detail :)
So, that's a maybe on the 2 strokes? :v:

I can't get that one more horsepower out of it
