Chris Roberts, the legendary creator of Wing Commander, Privateer, and Freelancer, is back from the dead. His return to PC gaming is coming in the form of a massively ambitious undertaking: a space sim called Star Citizen.
Taking place in 2942, humanity of the future is modeled after Ancient Rome. Citizenship must be earned, through service or other deeds, and this is where we come in. Lore and nerdy updates of the like can be found here.
Star Citizen is going to be an singleplayer AND online persistent universe space combat sim. Its offline component, known as Squadron 42, will tie directly into the online component or can be played entirely on its own. This part is also optional, you can skip it and hop directly online to raid space highways.
This game will be directly published from Robert's company. EA tried to court him but was shot down. Star Citizen uses CryEngine 3, and will scale to multiple cores and GPUs.
I spent too much money on virtual spaceships.
I was completely unaware that you interviewed Chris Roberts, jonoPorter. How'd that come to be?
You see back in the day there were some pretty nifty pledge packages. There was one that included an interview with CR, another that had you spending a weekend at the CIG office (when it was just the one), and one where they let you play like you're the man in charge IIRC. I think the last one was a $15,000 pledge and it was actually sold out.
I know practically everyone will be packing heat ingame, but has anything been said about unarmed combat? Was wondering if I can kick citizens in the space nuts.
There's been pretty explicit mention of bar fights because the game involves fighter pilots so I imagine there will be a rudimentary form of fist fighting.
I always had a hard on for Capital ships... shame none are available right now as far as I can tell.
I always had a hard on for Capital ships... shame none are available right now as far as I can tell.
Even if there were some available right now, I doubt you wanna shell out $5k+ on them.
plus they're mostly gone in ~5-10 minutes

Now now, I think the Idris was only $1,200.

Those are both capitals. It even says so in the Javelin description.
by the real world definition of capital warship, no they're not
SC's definition of capital seems to be simply anything that's big and has crew stations

But we're using SC's description of a warship.

The Javelin is the largest ship they want to put in the pledge store, and they made sure to leave all the guns off them, even at $2,500, so that people didn't start the PU on day 1 able to level entire fleets of newbies. CIG's said one thing and then changed their minds months later, but I have a feeling they're gonna stick with this one, because the Javelin is fucking huge, and do we really want the press to see $4,000 ships being sold on RSI.com? The gaming press is already biased against CIG, this would hand them an entire week of clickbait headlines.
Unannounced Concept Ship
Also, did anyone notice that the Completionist pack includes this, tucked away in the bulleted list?
A guy has a huge collection of almost all Star Citizen concept art, here.
Also, the latest Jump Point includes a piece on Accelerate Mass Design, and they began life as a tuning and aftermarket parts company (the first product they made was a hardware expansion board that was better and faster than the stock part, heh), and then they had an exclusive 20-year contract with Anvil (which eventually turned out less awesome than it originally was). Once they were free of their contract with Anvil, they ended up working with Consolidated Outland on the Omega, which is a customized Gamma after all.
There's a hint that Accelerated Mass Design (I can't abbreviate it to AMD, I can't) might get into ship manufacturing themselves, too.
Also in JP, there's a Skype chat interview with some of the QA people and the Bugsmasher. An excerpt from the last few pages:
JP: What do you remember most about getting v1.0 signed off?
Glenn: The flu. I was plagued in flu...
Geoffrey: Relief. It was a long, hectic wind-up to that release.
Mark: Sleep.
Melissa: friend invites not working, and having the urge to flip a few tables.
Tyler: We ended up staying extremely late and worked through the company holiday party. The community really came together and took care of us. We had junk food being delivered to the office that whole week from the community. Pretty sure I gained like 10 pounds.
...
Tyler: It was a really special thing to see the community show so much passion towards CIG that week. The forums were filled with players telling us to all go home and enjoy the holidays withour family. They said we needed to take a break and deserved it. They were almost down right adamant that we stop working. I think it's safe to say that was extremely heart-warming for all of us and only pushed us all to work even harder.
Justin: We did a very brief test of our new Public Test Universe a few days prior to release. We had asked that no-one stream from the PTU to keep things a surprise with our public release. The community was very responsive to our request and we did not see anyone streaming the PTU. We all got warm fuzzies from that.
Tyler: YES! That! There were about 10 streams online of players streaming. I made a post asking if players would not stream the Public Test Universe. To my awe, they all listened and streams went offline one by one.
That really blew my mind. They all earned mad respect from me that day.
For reference, these people are:
Glenn Kneale, Foundry 42 QA
Geoffrey Coffin, F42 Senior QA
Melissa Estrada, Austin QA
Tyler Witkin, new Austin QA (hired Nov 2014)
Justin Binford, CIG QA Manager
Mark Abent, the Bugsmasher
Couldn't leave this out:
JP: Bug-hunting, bug-smashing ... I suspect there's a more official term for this process. What is it? And what's your favorite unofficial name for it?
Mark: Shit's broke, time to get the coffee.
Melissa: what Mark said.

The Mustang Beta seemingly “came to life” and
started moving on its own the first day it was in the Hangar.
I was standing next to it one minute and the next
minute the cockpit was moving and turning toward me ...
I backed away and around it slowly, but it wasn’t stopping.
I walked up closer to it out of curiosity and the cockpit
abruptly turned and devoured my character, then the
cockpit disappeared. It was the most bizarre and hilarious
thing I have ever seen … and sadly, I have not been able
to repro it ever since.

Andy (using TrackIR) could see through his own
The buggy moving on its own. That was pretty
good. You would wander around your Hangar, then it was
like a meta game trying to find your buggy because it’s
not where you parked it.

In the early days you could shoot off every bit of a
ship and just leave the items such as thrusters ... so you
would just be a character on a chair with a bunch of weapons
and thrusters moving around.

I found in the older hangars if you used the buggy
and bumped a barrel into a Hornet, it would cause an
explosion. We got a kick out of that one too.

The space crab from the fish tank had its idle
animation swapped with the walking animation from the
Constellation cutscene. So it would spawn at the 0,0,0
coordinates of the map, and then proceed to “walk” to the
fish tank even though it was hovering about 10 feet in the
air. I opened a set of doors in the asteroid hangar expecting
to see a room that was there for a build, only to see
empty space, and then the space crab floated by. It was a
very bizarre moment.

If i was crazy enough to buy this i'd probably just use the ships for a corp or give them away or something, because youll fuck over your own progression and fun if you have literally everything, jesus.

My guess is that they update that list whenever a new ship is released and then add it to the hangars of people that have bought that package beforehand. That bit right there is probably just a way of saying "You will be getting more ships in the future."
See all this crowdfunding and early access hoo hah has me really confused as to how this game is going to be shipped?
Is it a subscrition MMO? Is it a one time buy thing? Is it F2P?
Is it actually a game and not just a premium ship concept buying simulator where you pretend to buy virtual ships?

This is something that gets asked quite often. We should put the answer in the OP.
After it's out it's going to be a one-time-buy. At the moment you only need to buy a ship that comes with the appropriate package to have access to the beta and to the full game after it's released.
IIRC you'll be able to buy credit with real money, but only a specific amount for a given time so that you don't progress faster than someone who plays a certain amount of time per week.
After it's complete it's going to be a persistent universe with a particular instance system (I don't remember the specifics) that's focused on being a first person experience. There's also Squadron 42 that's some kind of "campaign" mode which is an optional prelude to the PU experience.
