• Gameplay vs. Story poll

I've been curious to hear what people's opinions on this issue are. Do you prefer games that focus more on gameplay or games that focus more on story? If you could answer this poll it would be helpful http://www.strawpoll.me/11789460 And I hope we have a good discussion on this issue! Don't care too much about Story unless its like a JPRG or something. In which it better have a good story.
It just has to be good. If the game has a huge focus on the story and spends a lot of time on it, that story better be fucking good. If the game has a huge focus on gameplay and spends a lot of time on it, that gameplay better be fucking good. Basically, don't waste my fucking time. If your game is spending a lot of time on something, make it good.
Graphics and Quality-of-Life features all the way. I'm sorry but if your favorite game doesn't feature sunbeams and hitmarkers then its literally unplayable.
A good story can make a mediocre game bearable, but a game with good gameplay doesn't even necessarily need a story.
I do like myself some story, but it better be told well rather than just dumping a bazillion cutscenes in my face. I don't think a good story can exist without good gameplay to express it with (Like a really well thought out dialogue system or dynamic AI). Good gameplay can work on its own though.
A bad story doesn't really drag down gameplay, but horrible gameplay will drag down a good story. I can't see a story if i have to struggle with everything else.

Anyway I'd ideally prefer an interwoven design, where the story facilitates the gameplay or vice versa, but honestly don't really mind as long as both gameplay or story are good.
Gameplay before story but I won't reject a great story to go with it either. Convoluted as it is I fucking love Legacy of Kain for this reason.
That poll is too convoluted. The last option is basically "I like games that I happen to like".
That poll is too convoluted. The last option is basically "I like games that I happen to like".
Was going to say the same thing. In fact i'm not going to vote because i'll just be ticking every option. For me, I want games that focus both equally without being a detriment to the other, but I can and actively do absolutely love games than focus on 1 or the other and that includes exposition, be it AI conversations or cutscenes and files / cocuments i can read, so long as i can skip over them them on a repeated playthrough. Spec ops the line, gameplay was dull but the story was great and it was helped by the charecters. Wolfenstien the new order, an absolute brainless shooter with generic action hero on the face of it, actually pretty bloody deep with an incredibly well crafted world with suprisingly human charecters, even the bad guys. DooM, Plot and chacreters? Who the fuck cares, you're on mars becasue reasons, demons are here, you go to hell for a bit. Actually fuck you dickhead, just kill everything and stop asking questions.
