Rhythm Game Megathread v1 - Don't stop moving to the funky funky beat

I'm surprised this isn't a thing yet (or it is a thing and it's so buried that I can't find it.)
Quick Summary
This thread is all about Rhythm games. You like Rhythm games? Post about it. You got an insanely high score? Post about it. You are so incredibly frustrated with this one song and that one note just won't hit? Post about it.
What is a Rhythm game?
It's pretty self explanatory, but for those that do not know a Rhythm game is a game in which you have to "tap" along to the beat of the song to get points. The most well known example of a Rhythm game would be Guitar Hero or Rock Band.
Rhythm Game Recommendations
(this is just a list of the ones I play and like, I will add to this list when people recommend other rhythm games)
Guitar Hero - Does it need to be explained?
Audiosurf- You play as a ship that travels down a road that is shaped to the beat of the music, and collect notes. On Steam.
Cytus- Pop the bubbles in time with the music. On Android, iOS and the PSVita.
O2Jam U - Like guitar hero, you tap the notes as they get to the bottom of the screen. On Android and iOS.
osu! - Based off of Elite Beat Agents prequel. On PC and iOS. Has its own dedicated thread
Rhythm Heaven - Press touch and flick your way to victory as you play through hundreds of mini-games to the beat of the music. On GBA, DS and Wii.
Vib-Ribbon - Press different button combinations as your squiggly bunny friend try's to survive the beat. On PS1.
Donkey Konga - Drum along to the beat on a pair of bongos. On Gamecube.
Dance Dance Revolution - Dance along to songs by hitting up, left, right, and down on the dance mat. Originally an arcade machine, also released on pretty much every console worth a damn.
StepMania - Same as above. Open Source on PC. Help for playing online.
Flash Flash Revolution - Flash game of DDR where you press the up, left, right and down keys on the keyboard instead of on a dance mat. Flash game on PC.
Beat Mania - A DJ style rhythm game in which you press keys and spin a turn table to the beat. Released as an arcade machine, also on Gameboy Colour and Playstation One.
DJMax - Another DJ style game. On PC, PSP, iOS/Android and PSVita.
PhaseShift - A free Guitar Hero clone. On PC. Download Link
Only rhythm game I see people play on FP regularly or semi-regularly is osu!
But yeah I play osu and used to play O2Jam a long time ago.
My recommendations:
Rhythm Heaven (Series)
Rhythm Tengoku (GBA) - Remix 1
Rhythm Heaven (Rhythm Tengoku Gold) (DS) - Remix 8
Rhythm Heaven Fever (Minna no Rhythm Tengoku) (Wii) - Remix 3
The second and third are also available in America, but I just prefer the Japanese versions. :v:

I remember playing this in a shop once, that's the only experience I have with it. It's a shame the Wii version never made it out of production, I can't see how they would have failed to make it amazing.
I stilll have my copy of donkey konga an the kongas that came with it laying around, it's a fun game but the songs do get old pretty quickly.
Let's get some videos in here, post some crazy clips of people getting insane scores on insane songs.

I think this was the video that made me buy this game, it's just so intense and the joy in his voice when he gets past the tough parts and completes the song. It sums up for me why rhythm games are so great.

I'd consider buying it myself but at this point I know it will get old fast, and I am sure the set is rather expensive to begin with.

I think it's around 10-30 dollars on ebay which is quite cheap. The songs get old after a couple of hours yeah but it's great fun and quite addicting if you're playing against a friend.

Oh wow you're right, I just glanced on ebay and they have some for £20-25. I was expecting it to be around £50 but I might just have to get it now...
..Where's Stepmania/FFR/DDR on these lists? Come on, guys! Some love for the old besties!
Here is a great website to get everything you might want relevant to Stepmania, including setting up the networked gameplay that comes with all versions of Stepmania, in order to play with your friends.
no beatmania? no djmax?
so like are we merging the osu! thread with this one? i was wondering if we should turn osu thread into general rhythm game thread for a while now because there's really not much to talk about. and you've already made this one, sooo

this song sucks
my keyboard sucks
my webcam sucks
my fingers suck
I used to play that really shoddy GH clone for the PC.
Am I alone on this?
I forgot what it's called.
Anyways, I moved from that to osu! and never looked back.

Check your webcam settings, that looks blurry and low fps as fuck. Get better lighting and shit
Check your webcam settings, that looks blurry and low fps as fuck. Get better lighting and shit
my webcam is literally 7 years old
i'm surprised it can even barely do 30fps
buying a new webcam hasn't exactly been a high priority for me ;;
[editline]hi[/editline]
if you know of a good one like on newegg or something that's relatively cheap let me know
although all i'd ever really use it for is showing off my sick button mashing skills

Added these, sorry for not adding much to the original OP, I have never played much besides Guitar Hero a few times and Rhythm Paradise.

So you mean SUPER CRAZY GUITAR MANIA DELUXE THREEEE?. I have fond memories of being told off for playing this as I was destroying a perfectly good keyboard. Good times.
Sweet, a rhythm game thread.
I really want to buy a dance mat to play DDR or StepMania, it would be great exercise. Too bad; living in a studio apartment, I don't think it would go down well with the neighbours.
Audiosurf- You play as a ship that travels down a road that is shaped to the beat of the music, and collect notes. On Steam.
Does Audiosurf really count as a rhythm game? A music game most definitely but there's very little to do with rhythm in the gameplay itself.

Well it's different to the regular but I think it still counts as the gameplay is based on the rhythm of the song, play a slow song and it's slow gameplay, play a fast song and it's fast gameplay.

Holy shit that game was awful. I remember that, too. Me and my friends at school would play it during study period whenever we got the chance tho.

Well, you collect notes? It's something I suppose. Audiosurf 2 is on early access. I heard it was really bad though.
I'm terrible at rhythm games, donkey konga and rocksmith are the only ones I am good at. Playing a hard song on a real guitar/bass is easier than doing that shit on guitar hero's expert mode.

I am also really bad, though I can feel myself improving quickly as I practise.
For example in Cytus at first I was struggling to get S ranks on the really easy songs, but now I'm struggling to get S ranks on harder songs and the previous ones I have gotten Million Master (absolutely flawless) on. So that's reassuring as I grind my teeth when I fail for the umpteenth time to get this one note right.

i could do through the fire and the flames easily on expert when i was in highschool
never rly tried playing an actual guitar although i've been meaning to eventually
pretty sure i still have my disks for GH1/2/3, along with a guitar controller somewhere too
Might as well ask here.
I've really been enjoying DT on osu! recently and I'd like to find some more songs that are around the level of Shotgun Senorita [Hard] on DT mod.
If anyone happens to know any, shoot 'em my way pls

also did this
streams suck eh

Maybe the puzzle modes are a bit more rhythm based but in general the game doesn't feel like a rhythm game to me, it just feels more like a music game without the rhythm aspect. Same with something like Symphony though I would argue that's a little more rhythm based personally. And Audiosurf 2 doesn't suck per se. The dev just changed it a lot and last time I tried it more classic modes such as ninja mono didn't feel right. I haven't played since Christmas though so maybe he has changed that. (Hopefully he has in fact.)
And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Audiosurf shouldn't be listed here or anything, I just question it being labelled as a rhythm game is all.
Audiosurf is as much a rhythm game as beat hazard is a rhythm game.
In Audiosurf though the only thing the rhythm of the song really affects is how fast you go. In Beat Hazard it tends to affect everything from your weapon speed to how many enemies spawn.
But that still doesn't make either of them rhythm games. They're arcade games based on music but not rhythm games.

Er, what? That's what I've been arguing this entire time is that I don't think they should be classified as rhythm games. :v:
