Introduction
(Old thread)
HellMOO is a MUD (multi user dungeon) game, initially released in 2004, the game is set in a highly friendly and joyful post apocalyptic world. You can engage in fun activities such as:
-murdering and raping little orphaned children (in either order)
-knocking up a ladyfriend of yours, then feeding her baby to an underground dwelling shoggoth.
-do jobs for xp such as slaughtering infected orphans, giving medical assistance to patients, selling crank to crackheads, or slaughtering chuds and selling their meat to a guy so he can make chudburgers.
-get so drunk you pass out and have a dream in which you fuck your own dad, or go for a stroll in the park with some hippies.
-gather up your friends, assuming you have any, and film some porn for money
-mutate your body to fit your needs. you can gain features such as a sensitive nose for tracking people down, bone claws that sprout out of your arms that make your fists make a little more punch, or even make your dick and/or tits bigger if you really want to waste your time with such things.
-join up a corp (think clan) and engage in any of these activities with your awesome (or maybe not so awesome) corpie friends.
-bitch at admins until they zot you.
-and much much more!
FAQ
Q: So, how do I get started?
A: Pick up a MUD Client (MUSHClient is awesome) and connect to hellmoo.org:7777
Q: I don't recognize a term (ex: "Cube Hotel") in this thread.
A: Read all the sections, and if you can't find it, search it on the hellmoo wiki. I'm trying to convey a lot of information without having to explain every detail. Sorry!
Q: How do I grow up?
A: Find a museum flyer and have it take you to the museum, or just explore and walk there. Nothing really matters when you're an orphan / not grown up. You haven't even done character creation yet, basically.
Q: How do I quit "safely"?
A: Type @quit, but first rent an apartment (do this later when you have actual money or *need* to store items) or go to the Cube Hotel in Freedom City.
-Please read the thread first, though.

Basic Command List
HellMOO is a MUD, which means the games places are divided into rooms (or tiles). Objects such as items, players, and npcs exist in these tiles. Every single aspect you input into the game is controlled by "simple english" commands. You can move between rooms by typing directions. If a room has an exit to the north, you can type north (or simply n) to go to the north. Makes sense? Good. Most commands can be assumed, such as get soda from crate or kill bobby. Anyway, here's a basic list of commands that you'll need:
look - looks around the room and shows you what's there (abbrv. "l"), can also be used as look <x> to look at an object or item.
examine <x> - examines as an object or an item. This echos the same thing as look along with basic commands that can be used with the item or object. *use this a lot when you are starting out, it helps*
n/s/w/e nw/ne/sw/se - directional commands. The exits to a room will always (unless hidden) be outputted at the bottom of a "look" output.
app <x> - appraises something or someone. when used on an npc or player, it tells you how threatening they are compared to you. *use this a lot, all the time*
kill <x> - attacks the target thing. try not to do this to players unless you know what you're doing.
grind <x> - activates grinding on a certain skill (doesn't work when gymming a stat, see below) so you gain IP in that skill faster than others. Type grind nothing to not grind anything and have all skills progress equally. Try to use this when you're grinding *hint hint* your primary weapon skill early in the game.
drink <x> - drinks the target liquid in your inventory.
eat <x> - eats the target solid in your inventory (assuming you can).
drop <x> - drops an item in your inventory on the ground.
junk <x> - tosses away (effectively deletes) an item. be careful with this.
grab <x> - used in combat, you grab a player or npc (note this is a crime so don't just grab random civilians (orphans are ok because you're supposed to kill them anyway))
pow(er) - used in combat, you wind up and do a power attack on the target for extra damage.
sc(ore) - shows your stats (brawn, endurance, etc.), mutations, and skills.
st(ats) - shows your hp, thirst, hunger, stress and other similar things.
mut(ation) - shows all your mutations and what they do as well as how much XP is left until your next mutation slot
job - shows what jobs you have discovered and if they're available for doing
tac - shows all the entities (npcs, players) in the room as well as their health and status effects
inv - shows your inventory.
gmap / lmap - shows a large map of the surrounding area. very useful.
Character / Progression Guide
This guide will attempt to give you a decent understanding of the game. This isn't a guide that is supposed to teach you how to play MUDs. Scroll up and read the bit at the top of the commands list for that. Or just google it.
First things first, HellMOO is a numbers game. Which basically means it has very specific and intricate RPG-like features in it, and when it all comes down to it, it's about numbers such as how high your strength is and how much damage your weapons do at what speed. Things like character builds and gear play a huge role in how effective you are in game. As such, I recommend you read the *entire* guide. I'm not an expert at HellMOO, not everything I say is the best way to do things. You will reroll a lot. Rerolling is when you delete your clone and kill yourself, thus restarting your character completely. Like I just said, you will do this a lot. My personal suggestion would be to roll a Combat Fists user for your first character. Why is this? Fists are easy to grind! You already have a pair of them. So for the sake of simplicity, we are going to roll a theoretical fister. Lets begin!
So after you connect and make your way to the Museum (marked as MU on the map) and type grow. Okay! You've entered Dreams of Before!
- Dreams of Before (if you wanna read a nonspecific version of what i wrote, look here)
This the a fancy (and in my opinion, stupidly annoying) skill creation section of the character creation process. You walk around a dream of the past and pick up certain items that are around the place to "tag" certain skills. Tagging a skill gives you a headstart and basic ability in it (see Skills for more information on this). So, since we're going to be rolling a Combat Fist User, we don't really rely on a lot of skills. If we were rolling a more Brains-y character, the skill tagging process would be slightly more important and involve more grinding overall as Brainy characters need to have a lot of skills to be useful.
Anyways, the tagging process is pretty open ended for a brawny fighter like you, so you should be tagging:
Fists (obviously) - located: In the River, 1 east, 1 south, 1 southeast and 1 east from where you wake.
You've got three tagged skill slots left, for this build I'd suggest you tag any three of the following:
Scavenge - Helps you do the Chudburger job, find hidden things, get good early money and is overall useful.
located: Bottom of the River, 1 east, 1 south, 1 southeast, 1 west and 1 down from where you wake.
Climb - So you don't fall and die when you go to grind leeches around 30k XP, or have issues with Necropolis if you mutate into a Zombie and die early on (How did you manage to die as a Zombie, anyways?)
located: Top of the Tall Tree, 1 east, 1 south, 1 southeast and 1 up from where you wake.
Medic - Helps with early sustain, allows you to somewhat effectively use trauma kits on yourself for free hp. But then again, you could just go to Sister Agnes for free healing when you're a newbie.
located: Suburban Bathroom, 3 east from where you wake, in a medicine cabinet.
Wrestle - Allows you to grab stuff better. Helpful for fighting early game stuff when you're really weak. I wouldn't take this unless you plan to get the Hooligan mutation, which you usually do on Combat Fisters anyway.
located: Your Room, 2 east, and 1 up from where you wake, in a toy chest.
*Remember, the above is just an example. You don't always want to tag fists, or never tag Science or Pilot, etc.*
Things you SHOULD NOT tag:
Swim - useless when tagged
Sneak - only really useful for hideous freaks, don't tag because freaks have an innate sneak buff anyway
Persuade - good for scamming citizens (npcs), but a waste of a tag
Appraise - only for apping shit and you don't need points in the skill to do that
Linguist - does nothing.
Fuck - you filthy slut, are you really playing this game just to fuck things?
Things you CANNOT tag:
Dodge - automatically used in combat, one of the most important combat skills and is ironically super fucking hard to grind. whiff whiff.
Focus - used for certain mutations such as lighting enemies on fire, spitting out clouds of nasty smoke to cover your escape, or ejaculating on command. once again, very useful and hard to grind. ugh.
When you've gotten all four skills you want tagged, type "wake" to continue character creation.
(more skills info here)
-Bunker
So you've tagged your skills and have moved on to stats distribution. This is bit is very fucking important regardless of your build. This also varies greatly depending on every build. Most builds that use melee weapons max reflexes first, for example.
So, going along with our combat fister build;
Max your reflexes first at the speed bag.
Max your brawn second weight bench.
Put your remaining points in Endurance at the stove.
Once you're done with all of that, exit the bunker and go out into the world of HellMOO!
-Gear
So you're naked and have no weapons. What to do? Well, first things first, you need to pick up your weapon of choice. If you're going Fists then you don't need to. You've already got your weapons for about half of your grinding adventure. However if you're a Whipper or Clubber, you're not as lucky. Head over to Ammunation! (marked as "Am" on the map) and buy a weapon for your respective need. Next, you need some armor. Go to Ammunation!'s neighbor, Protect Ya Neck. They sell basic armor such as leather armor and other bits and bobs. Marked as "Pr" on the map.
Now, you need some of your utility items such as a canteen and a cocoon. Find "EO" on the map and go to it. Pick up a White Cocoon. When you die, all your items are sealed in this white cocoon. So when you run back to where you died, you can (and no one else, unless you allow them via certain pref commands) open your cocoon and get your stuff back. Next, grab a canteen and fill it up at the Orphanage Kitchen. Having water on you to quench your thrist is always handy.
-Grinding
Grinding is a major part of progression in HellMOO. Fortunately for you, depending on the skill, it's pretty low maintenance on your part and doesn't take that long. I've broken 12k XP within my first day of rerolling, and that's without sperging super hard and doing everything "optimally". So you usually want to grind your primary weapon skill be it Fists, Whips, Spears, or god forbid, Flails first. Then you diverge and work on other skills.
Your grinding adventure begins at the Orphanage. First, invoke your handy grind command (in this case "grind fists") and start bashing stuff. You may want to explore the Orphanage first (try to avoid the furnace and attacking Alvin) to see what's there. Find Sister Agnes and talk to her about a job you might be able to do. When you fight shit you get IP in the skills you use to fight and you get XP once you kill stuff, assuming it isn't too weak to give you XP.
Kill orphans until they stop giving XP. This is called minmaxing and is generally the best way to grind. Alternatively, if you're actually sane you can just move up on the list of stuff to kill after doing some test runs on the more difficult mob to make sure you can reliably kill it without being killed yourself.
The general progression of grinding goes like this:
Orphans -> Crackheads / Crackfiends / Crackwhores -> Chuds / Chobos -> Bradbury Zombies -> Rock Leeches / Karnivores / Footballers -> Treemen
However this progression varies from character to character in terms of difficulty and preference. For example, grinding off karnivores and footballers (in my opinion) is a fucking stupid idea unless you're rerolling and already have Caballero gear, leechhide, and rad-q pills to do them without dying or getting radiation mutations and you're much better off just doing rock leeches.
I'm not going to explain to you the exact location of every single one of these mobs in this guide unfortuantely, it ruins one of the best parts of HellMOO which is exploring! Yes, the game that I've been going on about being grindy and about numbers has actually interesting shit to it.

-Jobs
Another method of gaining xp that doesn't involve boring mob killing and grinding. You can find most of the jobs in the game around Freedom City. Two of the most basic ones are Orphanage Exterminator, which you can get from talking to Sister Agnes. Another is Corpse Grinder which you get by grinding a human (hint, human, don't try to use a dog or some stupid shit) corpse in the RDCD Unit. Look for "Re" on the map. All jobs in the game have a sort of cooldown to them, which means they can only be done every once in awhile. Some jobs you can only do every 14 in game days, some only 1 in game day. It varies, so use the job command.

-Journals
Journals are achievements, basically. They're unique to every time you roll a new character (delete your clone, kill self). For example, the first time you kill an orphan you get a kill journal. The first time you visit Anyport you get a location journal, and so on. There are unique quests that give more XP than the usual location or kill journal, such as dealing with a lonely girl's dead father or bombing a certain crack mansion. Explore. Kill shit. Find stuff. Blah blah blah blah.

-Death
So you died. It happens to everyone. You will reclone to whereever you are subscribed, by default you're subscribed in Freedom City. You will lose all your items on you and they will be where you died. You will also lose any XP, IP, or Mutations that you got since you last updated your clone. Your clone updates when:
-you do it yourself at wherever you're subscribed and pay money for it
-you do a job
-you get a journal

-Questions / Relaxation / Etc.
Want a break? Looking for some company? Try hanging out in Anyport ("AP" on the map, across the street from the Orphanage) and wait for some players to waltz in as they usually do. Ask questions.
Don't be a dunce and try asking questions to npcs like Care Dog or Veronica. They're npcs, silly.

XP/IP/GYM/STATS
-Stats
Your stats add extra proficiency to certain skills that they are associated with. They also affect certain non-skill factors such as your ability to resist drugs, disease, or how fast you attack with a weapon. For example, Fists is a Brawn/Endurance skill. This means if I have high brawn and endurance, my Fists skill would be higher than what it would be if I had low brawn and endurance.
Stats List:
brawn, brains, cool, endurance, reflexes, and senses.
-Skills
Skills are one of the most important aspects of HellMOO. They determine how well you can perform certain tasks such as punching things with your fists, repairing someone's brain with surgery, or crafting a shiny leather beret. In character creation, you generally tag skills that you're going to use later or are extremely handy early on (such as Wrestling).
-XP
XP is a universal number that shows how much shit you've done. Journals, jobs and killing mobs yields XP. Whenever you get more Total XP, you receive the same amount of Spendable XP. You can use Spendable XP to improve your skills past the point of grinding. Which brings me to...
-IP
IP is a decimal associated with every single one of your skills. When you tag a skill in character creation, that skill starts at 1.00 raw IP, as opposed to 0. Your raw IP in a skill determines how proficient you are in a skill. You can grind skills up to 6.00 raw. However, other players and NPCs can teach you in a skill (thus spending your Spendable XP) up to 15.00 raw.
-Gym
Every time you reach an XP milestone, you gain Gym IP. Gym IP is used to train your stats to a higher level. The maximum you can train a stat to is 18.00. However, things such as mutations and drugs can buff your stats to a higher degree than simply 18.00.
Mutations
Ahh yes, this is one of my favorite mechanics in the game. Think of these like Perks in Fallout, except a lot more diverse and interesting. Like Gym IP, you get a new Mutation slot every single XP milestone, including one at the beginning of a character. Mutations can do everything from stop you from being able to receive bleeding wounds, or give you the ability to swallow anything you want for food to morphing you into a shambling Zombie or a Hideous Freak. It's very important you don't waste your mutation slots on really stupid shit because they're a bitch to remove. You have to sail to some obscure island and use some machine which decreases your maximum health, takes off 1.00 raw from one of your top 3 skills and makes you age 10 years. Nasty. What mutations you pick up determines what kind of build you're going for. Do me a favor and use your brain. For example, if you're going Whips as your main weapon skill, which is a weapon skill that relies on Reflexes and Senses, don't pick up Brute Strength which increases your brawn. You don't need it, silly goose. If you're unsure, ask people questions. Seriously.
Ask questions. Questions questions questions.
A list of all mutations can be found here.
Implants
Implants are unique to each body, which means you lose them when you die and you need to get 'em cut from your corpse and reimplanted. It sucks. Anyway, implants cost lots of money and are used to give you small stat boosts. These stat boosts come in two flavors, which are: +1 to one stat, or +3 to one stat and -1 to another stat. Certain kinds of players such as Hideous Freaks or Abominations can only wear a lower maximum number of implants thanks to their acid blood.
Closing Thoughts
HellMOO is a deep and complex game. Don't get discouraged! It's buckets of fun once you get into it and understand it. I'm really, really sorry that this OP sucks I wrote it all really quickly because I wanted a HellMOO thread. I will fix errors / update it after I go to sleep and eat some food. Thanks for reading.
this game always comes back to taunt me to play it, how many people even still play this??
It begins again.
I sank a good month into this game before it lost its luster. It's a really cool thing though. I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it before.
lmfao "outlaws"
jesus christ thats right, fuckin gilmoo, whats even the state of it?
its a wreck much like infernomoo atm
this game always comes back to taunt me to play it, how many people even still play this??
also ~90 depending on time of day.
edit: i peeked at inferno/hatemoo and both only have players in the single digits currently, while regular HellMOO is at about ~102 at this time.
This game use to be a major time sink of time, though one of my really great friends still pesters me about it daily and it's almost convincing me to play. Any advice for filthy casuals like me?
hi im the cockler still in every iteration of hell how's everyone doin

progress is slow, but it will probably be around next year and infernmoo/hatemoo/spinoffmoo probs won't be
in gilmoo busted up implants give you mental illnesses that act like pcp but more specific to whichever hidden condition you get, it's pretty fuckin' rad
necan is now a player for some reason (???) and there a bunch of carebear corps which cannot attack/be attacked by players unless under super specific conditions (and if you somehow get the situation to meet those conditions you will probably be called a griefer)
infern/hatemoo are pretty much dead when it comes to players afaik.
How is hellmoo still alive but infernomoo isn't? I thought it was the other way around last I played, which was a few months ago.

edit: oh :3
I dunno what inferno is like now but when I stopped playing a couple of months ago it was like me and maybe 10 other people at the most on at one time.
gg way to use one of the most outdated fucking maps available

brace for retards screaming from the high heavens that gilmoo is perfect and hellmoo has never been in a better state than it is now.
[editline]27th August 2013[/editline]
gilmoo now has 100% feint immunity available to players with 0 brains or less.
that's right!!! remember how having low brains meant you were easier to feint?? not having an easily attainable 0 brains makes you entirely feint immune.
wtb fistvamps
[editline]27th August 2013[/editline]
oh and the +2 end from superlcot is now on billygoat (?????????) and iron liver has +1 end (camelfat remains unchanged)
please save me infernomoo mins. a game balanced by people who haven't played for years is terrible
[editline]27th August 2013[/editline]
pps: average players on hellmoo is 40-60, a chunk of which will be hours idle or sitting in their apartments. admins bump the score up by like 35 at peak.

carebears and modern day hellmoo players are completely incapable of griefing.
the lack of griefers is not because they "can't handle being griefed over chatnet" (lol) but instead because hellmoo has become a haven for carebears and sexhavers, the kinds of which would still be being griefed had the admin team not decided to pander to the kinds of people that fueled the grief and tear trains in the many years prior to it becoming a carebear haven.
griefers kept retarded players and weirdos from playing the game and being seen publicly. with the loss of that very major part of the playerbase, hellmoo had deteriorated in to, as was said earlier in the thread, a cesspool pandering to weirdos.
the overwhelming majority of the current playerbase bitches and whines as soon as they get killed by other players. most corps are run by people with this same mentality, and carebears can do whatever they want without retaliation, further pandering to the now large group of players that log on to fuck in public and believe that chatnet is a giant blog for their autism.
[editline]1st September 2013[/editline]
i don't think the unqiestionably superior playerbase that existed presplit would return even if the mins stopped pandering to weirdos and retards. the only reason i continued playing was to grief retards, which gave me more tears and autistic delight than i managed to get after 5 years of playing before the split.
and that was in like, a month and a half.
