My two cents
A few weeks ago a friend tipped me off about a new indie game in development called Kenshi. Soon after, I downloaded the demo and tried it out, decided I liked it, and started reading up on what plans the developer had for the game. After deciding it was well worth 10$ I bought it, and haven't regretted my purchase since. For now he's working alone (he's planning on hiring an artist), and he has been putting a lot of time and effort squashing the bugs and crashes being reported while at the same time slowly adding to the game.
About the game
At the moment Kenshi is purely free-roam since missions haven't been added, the setting and feel of the game reminds an awful lot of the flash game Caravaneer. You have a trade center in every town, with resources that can be traded between locations. The towns are scattered along the desert plains, with caravans, bandits, police and recently also empire troops traveling between cities. The biggest pull of the alpha right now is how the AI interact with each other, and the recruiting and training of a squad. Other unique aspects that characterize this game even in this early alpha stage are as following:
Advanced health system - Your characters health is defined for your Blood, Head, Chest, Stomach, Left- and Right- Legs and Arms respectively. HCS are your vitals, if one of them drops below 0 you pass out. When you are hurt, you receive a wound and start to bleed, bleeding wounds can be bandaged to stop bleeding.
Asian weaponry - Planks, Toppers, Hackers, Katanas and more! The weapon choices are wide and new ones can easily be modded in.
Modability - Just like Mount and Blade the game is aiming to be very mod-friendly, with the first alpha release of the game a modding toolset was already included.
Down the line (Read: Potential!)
From what I've read at the game design section of the site, it seems like the game is gonna end up being reminiscent of Mount and Blade, only much better and much more dynamic! We're talking base-building, large armies, a huge and dynamic world, extensive and advanced AI in the form of factions of all sizes, limb loss, robotics, harpoon turrets, etc. The list goes on and this is only what we will see in the vanilla, more fun to come with inevitable mods.
If you liked M&B, or maybe just the idea of Asian weaponry in a free-roam StrategyRPG format then download the demo and try it out at http://www.lofigames.com/
Looks promising, I'll try it out.
Looks interesting, thanks for sharing.
Actually looks cool. I'll download the demo.
Edit: This is actually really cool, I'll be waiting for a beta.
I saw this posted somewhere a while back, didn't realise a demo was out.
This looks very interesting. Gonna give the demo a try.
This game looks like my dream game.
Asian weaponry - Planks
that's some high tech weaponry right there
I remember this game. It looked fucking awesome. Glad to see a demo now. Trying it out.
that's some high tech weaponry right there
I'm actually legitimately hoping for some projectile weaponry, whether it be bow and arrow, gunpowder, black powder, or laser.
A free-roaming squad based RPG. Focusing on open-ended gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a mercenary, a business owner, a doctor, a bandit... the list goes on. Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert. Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors. Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
Description better not be bullshitting because that sounds awesome.

FUCK WHAT DO I DO
i fell off the starting mountain and i dont know how to attack clicking randomly does nothing D:
I'm glad to see that I managed to spark some interest!
First of all, the Plank is actually a long, wide, thick flat piece of metal, it reminds a bit of a Buster Sword really. I'm not sure if there is even an actual edge to this thing, it is classified as a heavy weapon and primarily does blunt damage.
Second, about ranged weaponry. Planned for the game are bows and arrows, harpoon guns, and harpoon turrets (I'm imagining a big turret type structure placed on a wall to fire large harpoons). I'm sure we will see other kinds of ranged weaponry modded in as soon as the base mechanics have been implemented of course.
Third and last, baby steps tutorial. The first thing you want to do once you've created a character and started, is to left click your character portrait to select him. Then proceed to right click the portrait to get the camera to follow him. You can then right click anywhere on the ground to walk there. Right clicking friendly AI will initiate dialogue, and right clicking hostile AI will initiate combat. You can also hold right click to get a drop down menu of different actions to perform.
You notice that you start in a town, go find the bar and recruit the sword for hire. Now you have two people, hold shift and left click both of their portraits to select them, and then walk to the town entrance. Usually there's a group of bandits visible from the town entrance, if you can't find them try zooming out with your mousewheel. Once you've identified the bandits, run up to them to get their attention, then run back to the city entrance to get help from the guards. When you're sure all the bandits are busy with guards, you can right click one of the bandits to start attacking them and train some skill.
When the bandits are all incapacitated, you can start looting them. Pick up whatever you can find and proceed to sell it at the weapons and armor store in town. You now have enough money to buy a backpack, find the guy who sells backpacks and buy a large one. After you've fitted the pack in the appropriate slot in your inventory, you can proceed either by scavenging bandit gear in the desert or trading between towns. You can also try following a merchant caravan in hopes of encountering bandits along the way.
Oh and the arrows on the right side of the screen are speed settings.
God this game is so hard. Got myself a sword for hire and tried to lure a gang of bandits back to a nearby city's walls. On the way I met some dudes in black armor who were hostile to me as well as the bandits, so a fight started between them. The guys in black armor were killed so I continued my journey to the city walls.
Once the bandits were dispatched by the town guards, I noticed a lone bandit hobbling on one foot towards the town. Decided to train up my guys' skill levels by quickly finishing him off. To my surprise, however, that wounded, lone bandit killed my main character, leaving him bleeding to death, and completely mangled the left arm of my sword for hire :(
I got some random graphical glitch.
I remembered when this guy frequented Fun-Motion and always posted about his gamemaker games in very poor english. They were cool, though.

Oh wait, he was named Lafe
Awful game.
It's so incredibly bland.
It may have potential if they actually put some effort into the world.
It's an early alpha, right now it's more of a tech demo than a game (comparatively speaking), and there is still a fair group of people having fun with it. I think that says something about the potential for the game :P
Of course I understand that some people just aren't interested in the genre or concept, but that's a whole 'nother thing.
Similar vain as Mount and Blade?
Multiplayer ?
I was just waiting for someone to make a thread about Kenshi. I maxed out most stats in the demo version, now I can actually kill groups of enemies.. you really feel that you're getting stronger with the time.
Also, pro tip: If someone strikes you down, speed up the time and wait. Once you don't see any red on that health bar window your guy should just stand up.

I like the character maker.
Multiplayer is not in the plans for the game, it might be something to be looked at after the game presents a rich and full singleplayer experience, but if you ask me it'd be a nightmare to try to synch all that AI calculation together :P
And I'm not sure exactly what you are asking Nodachi, but the way the game is played reminds of M&B. You start out lousy and alone and you recruit a band and train them. It does look like Kenshi is gonna have more modability than M&B did though.
On Badunka's note, there's apparently a guy on the Kenshi forums who made an entire squad of elite freaks ^^
This game crashes before i can even save my game. Next update better be good.
looks fun, too bad my computer is teh shit
Bear in mind that there is a bug reporting forum, if you are having crashes or graphical glitches then make a thread (preferably following the template on the forum), and it is quite likely that it will be fixed.
This game is absolutely amazing. I might actually buy the alpha, it reminds me of a superior version of mount and blade.

You're right, i should.
This game looks like my dream game.
Really? How so Rofl my Waff.
There's been an update on the main page about the project, planned features and such.
This game is really awesome, I played the demo and I loved it, only thing they need to add is damn sounds. I also like the Asian desert style, I think they should keep the location but only add more rocks and other objects that make the world live.
