In the ruins of a fallen civilisation, a shattered ecosystem struggles for survival.
Bone-shatteringly intense rain regularly pounds the surface and flash floods tear through the subterranean levels, making life as we know it impossible.
But in the brief windows between storms, strange and deadly creatures emerge to hunt.

You are a nomadic Slugcat, a clever, agile, tool-using animal near the bottom of Rain World's brutal food chain.
When the rain stops, you must emerge from your shelter to find enough food to survive the next hibernation... but other, larger predators have exactly the same idea.
Features:
* Explore a massive, open world with 12 distinct regions and over 500 screens (so far).
[T]http://i.imgur.com/gSHJJhj.png?1[/T]
* Fluid procedural animation - all creatures are physically simulated in the world.

* Persistent, dynamic world - The creatures of rain world go about their business - hunting smaller creatures, running from predators, fighting over territory - regardless of whether you are around to see it.

* Creature AI that is smart enough to fool. Use thrown objects as distractions, or break line-of-sight of your pursuer to lose them.

I've been following this game's Devlog over at TIGSource for some time now. The devs, Joar & James, have been working flat out for around 3 years!
So much so they don't seem to have time to pimp their own game... so I'll be coming through here from time to time to post their progress & any info I didn't put in the OP.
The artstyle is breathtaking in itself but it's the softbody effect of the animations that really sell the enemies. They all have such a unique movement style. I especially liked those chicken stilt things running at full tilt and stumbling over each other (was the orange eyed and more frilled one commanding the others or being attacked by them?) and the smoke bird thing that moved itself around with its wingtips but also flapped inbetween doing so
The concept is great also. Wonder if there'll be an overarching 'story' or if it's more of a survival mode? You'd think the "persistent, dynamic" world would add a lot of replayability. Regardless, instant fanboy, definitely keeping an eye on this one
[editline]27th September 2015[/editline]
Ah, so it's more of a 'venture out when the rain stops, try to find some prey and then find another place to sleep when the rain comes back' kind of gameplay loop? I really like that
Yeah, I definitely agree on the softbody thing - that's why there's so many gifs in here. Pictures just don't do it justice.
As for the story, supposedly there's going to be bits of it scattered around the world. Figuring out the reason the civilisation is in ruins might be a bit too much for your character's little slugcat brain - but it will probably be hinted at.
Stuff like that weird brain tree in the "Slugcat Life" trailer, perhaps?
Given the art and animation style, I'm getting a Heart of Darkness vibe from it.
This is going to be a pretty brutal game.
Are all the GIFs in the OP really necessary? My machine chugs whenever I scroll past it
That's just the format the devs post them in. I could try to use webm from here on out... I guess.
This is going to be a pretty brutal game.
You better believe it!
If you die in a room with multiple lizards in it a huge brawl will break out as they fight over your corpse. If you don't reload the game the camera follows your body as each lizard tries to drag you back to its den while the others chase it down.
Are all the GIFs in the OP really necessary? My machine chugs whenever I scroll past it
How often are you going to scroll past the OP? Anyway if you're chugging on the page itself it'll be fine once we get to page 2. I wouldn't mind a gif from twitter posted every now and then as I'm not on twitter
Looks beautiful but I can't help but notice there's nearly no gameplay, just jumping around and throwing a spear.
Hopefully it's more complex than that, the animations are too beautiful to be wasted on an empty game

There are also slugcat kittens that have been shown, which involves teaching them but also protecting them as you try to move to the next storm shelter (So very Shelter), but we don't know how they fit into the "story"
I saw this years ago on a TIGSource blog, and I forgot what it was called. I cannot wait for this to come out. Everything looks so organic and fluid.
I love the procedural animation and wow that art style.
Wow, god damn. This is pretty.
That artstyle really sells it well. That is just so fluid and natural, and yet, absurd, and otherworldly, in every good way.
I really like the artstyle, but it hasn't really sold me on the gameplay. Seems a bit too basic, imo.
Here's a run from an old alpha version (late 2014?) that was for Kickstarter backers. Lots of stuff missing from the latest alpha, has bugs, etc.
In the alpha, the goal is to eat 7 bats and get to shelter before the rain hits.

The difficulty of the alpha is quite punishing at times. It only takes one screw-up and you're dead.
Or, for example, [sp]a lizard or two to suddenly get in your way as you make a mad dash for shelter[/sp]

IMO the game is at its most fun when you're hunting bats and avoiding lizards at the same time.
Or when a bunch of lizards are chasing you and a vulture shows up. EVERYTHING in the room suddenly shits itself and tries to run for cover.
this looks amazing

Wow, the music is incredible.
[editline]29th September 2015[/editline]
What other game had a similar aesthetic but was about ninjas and robots? It had a kickstarter too and we made a thread here but I don't remember what was the name.
The devs are doing behind-the-scenes audio stuff at the moment. So here's some stuff with audio.

(no, I've never heard of coub either - can't embed it)

The devs mentioned that trying to make three pups survive make the game EXTREMELY hard. So from what I remember, they are completely optional.
Wow, the music is incredible.
The soundtrack is quite... varied from what I can tell.

Also check out those coub videos. The ones with music go on for minutes despite the video looping every 10 seconds.
Some are pretty weird, but I really dig the more ambient ones.

Actually upper subterranean. Might have multiple cave ins and mixing in with the upper regions.
The devlog has been quiet as the last region is being kept a secret. But here's some new stuff:

These centipede-things have movement-based vision. Apparently they can see and attack with both ends as well, for extra fun.
But even the big ones aren't at the top of the food chain...

The "daddy long-legs" is totally blind. It sweeps the room with its tentacles if it hears something.
Your only reprieve from the creature is that it has no preference for slugcat meat. Use other creatures as distractions!

According to their kickstarter they are in the 'final stretch towards a launch date'.
So hopefully not too long!
Truly looking forward to this. Looks like a great mix of Limbo and Ori which I never knew I wanted until I saw it.
Thanks for sharing, art style is enjoyable
Wow, I am loving this, some real great imagination behind it!
Old example of co-op.
