What's Ace Combat?
Ace Combat (AC; エースコンバット; Ēsu Konbatto) is a hybrid arcade-simulation flight action video game series featuring 12 games,[1] published by the Japanese company Namco Bandai Games, and produced by Project Aces, an internal development team. The series emphasizes fast-paced action and dramatic plots, and has established itself as one of the most successful arcade flight action franchises.
The gameplay in Ace Combat revolves around shooting down enemy planes with guided missiles and a machine gun, and in the later games, a special weapon that the player can select. There are also ground targets that the player has to engage, as well as super-weapons, enemy ace pilots, and even large missiles, in some of the games. Typically, the storylines of the Ace Combat games involve war or insurrections, and sometimes conspiracies.
Another thing that occurs in most Ace Combat games is that the protagonist is different in each game (aside from a conspiracy that the protagonist of AC04 (Mobius One) is actually the protagonist of AC0 (Cypher)). All Ace Combat games are set in a universe called strange-real, where the earth is not quite the same as ours, and there are various different continents and countries, but that's really the only noticable difference, as most things in the strange-real universe are very similar to our own universe. Here's a map.
The games

Air Combat/Ace Combat
Air Combat is the first game in the series. It was released on arcade machines in 1992, but was then ported to the PS1 system in 1995. Set in an unnamed country in the strange-real universe.

Ace Combat 2
The second game in the series. Only released on the PS1 system in 1997. It introduces Aces, which are more advanced enemies that challenge the player. They are recognizable by their different colour planes, and usually arrive in squadrons. Set in the country of Usea in the strange-real universe. This game also introduces Wing-men that the player can fly with, and be given orders.

Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere
The third game, and a science fiction game. Released late 1999 for Japan, and early 2000 everywhere else. Only on the PS1 system. This game is set in the year 2040 in the strange-real universe, and features made-up plane designs. The game's north american release was alot different to the game's Japanese release, in the way that the Japanese release had more story content. In 2011, Namco included the game as the first part of the 'United Galaxy Space Force' series, which connects alot of Bandai-Namco's series into one universe.
NOW WE'RE ONTO SOME REAL FUCKIN' GOOD SHIT.

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies or Ace Combat 04: Distant Thunder
The fourth game. Released on the PS2 system between 2001 and 2002. This game introduces the asteroid impact with the strange-real universe (which happens before the game's beginning), and introduces the player's character of Mobius one. It is unknown if the Asteroid impact happens after the events of AC1 and AC2. Despite the previous games having already awesome soundtracks, this game introduces a new, higher-quality soundtrack to the game, available with the new PS2 system's technological abilities, a trend that continues through to most Ace Combat games after this point. This game features anime cutscenes, radio-chatter, and the inclusion of some of the first super weapons seen in the series, as well as some local multiplayer.

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War or Ace Combat: Squadron Leader
The fifth game, and perhaps one of the longest. Released between 2004 and 2005, for the PS2 system. The game takes place in a different continent from AC04 and the earlier games, so the asteroid impacts dont really matter here. This game features more interactivity with Wing-men, but with only YES/NO answers. This game also introduces small, skip-able segments where the player can land on aircraft carriers, airstrips, and refuel in mid-air. This game also introduces improvements to the player's map, and improved targeting systems.

Ace Combat: The Belkan War or Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
This is the sixth game released in the series, but is actually a prequel to Ace Combat 5. Came out between 2005 and 2006, for the PS2. The game takes place in mostly the same continent as AC5, but it revolves around the Belkan War that happened around 10-15 years before the events of AC5. The game features new Aces that are actually a large part of the game's storyline, and the player's actions through the game change dialogue and what Aces the player faces throughout the game. This game is also the only Ace Combat game to feature live-action cutscenes. The previous YES/NO interactivity with Wing-men is removed in this game, but the rest of the options for Wing-men (such as giving orders) are still available.
Now we get to the most recent games.

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
The sixth game in the game's universe, released in 2007, only for the Xbox 360. The game features new online features, such as team deathmatch modes and co-op modes, along with downloadable missions and aircraft skins. Received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike. The game's story takes place close to Ace Combat 5's events, but no relation is made between the two, although AC6 is set in a country close to one of the countries that AC5's story revolves around.
(This shit doesnt deserve a picture.)
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
A spin-off of sorts, hated by fans of the previous games for how much the gameplay and storylines deviate from the typical Ace Combat style. Released on the PS3, Xbox 360, and recently, the PC. The gameplay is much changed from the gameplay of typical Ace Combat games, and features, simpler, combat. The game features missions where the player uses different aircraft, like an AC-130 and an attack helicopter. The story is set in the real world, yet still features some fantasy elements. The game also has multiplayer, improving on what multiplayer the game had in AC6.
Spin-offs, ports, and other titles:
Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception - 2006, PSP
Ace Combat Xi: Skies of Incursion - 2009, iPhone
Ace Combat: Joint Assault - 2010, PSP - The only other game besides Assault Horizon to take place in the real world.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy - Takes place in strange-real, and features Aces from the previous games.
But seriously, listen to how good the fucking music in these games is:

What's all this about a new game?
Ace Combat: Infinity is a free-to-play game exclusive to PS3. It has a campaign, but also a co-op multiplayer mode where two teams of 4 compete in different levels for points. It includes stuff like ranking, a plane tech tree, credits, and the like. It has a pay to play mechanic where, if the player doesnt buy more fuel, the player can only play the multiplayer every 4 hours. It is set in a world where the real world and the strangereal world have combined.
It is in open beta from the 4th of Feb to the 11th of Feb. Everything is free right now, so play it before you have to wait 4 hours between every game!
Can't wait
I hope they bring back enemies who freak out over the radio when they see you

That, and reversing assault horizon
Air Combat and Ace Combat 2 are two of my favourite games for the PS1. I played through the original when I was a kid, then bought AC2 about half a year ago on a whim and finished it.
The orchestral themes of the later instalments are monumental, but I think I still love the cheesy synth rock of the first two games just a little bit more.

that fucking guitar starting at 0:44 is one of the best things I've ever heard
Even though nobody knows exactly what the new game is about, I am already hyped. Tonight might be the reveal for the game. The promotional teaser site has been counting down in an obtuse way, and with Ace Combat references from the Strangereal universe.
At this point it's looking likely that the next game is going to be back in Strangereal. That's honestly what I'm most excited about. My biggest problem with Assault Horizon wasn't the CRA mechanic, but that it took place in real life. One of the best parts of Ace Combat to me was that because it wasn't real life, you could get away with anything story-wise. In the modern day there's just no plausible way for air combat on the scale of Ace Combat to happen. It makes anything you might want to do seem really silly when you try to come up with excuses in the context of modern politics and air forces.
Not to mention Strangereal allows you build crazy superweapons and fight airplanes that never made it past the prototype stage. Seriously, in the course of a single Ace Combat mission, it's not uncommon for you to destroy more of an aircraft type than was ever built. Especially when you start talking about the more recent Russian stuff like the Su-35 or Su-47.
OP already covered the messages and teaser site.

Wow, these are actually awesome. Thanks for showing me these.

Don't forget flying inside of said superweapons with your plane to blow them up miraculously and come out unscathed all with the enemy chattering about how ridiculous it is that they're getting reports from their comrades of airplanes flying underground.
Tomorrow @ 9AM (Central European Time), we will fly again.
Yay! I can't wait.
Apparently (I don't have a FB to check myself) from this guy's page: https://www.facebook.com/tony.shoupinou
He's the EU community manager for Namco Bandai Games.
That translates to 3AM EST and midnight PST.
[editline]18th July 2013[/editline]
But the updates to the teaser site happen around 9PM EST, so maybe that's just the time for the official announcement in Europe.

I'm gonna add this to the OP.
I wonder if it's going to be next gen
Hopefully AH sold well enough on Steam (despite the crying) to convince them there's a viable PC market as well, else I'm going to have to buy a PS4 sooner than I would like

I wonder what kinda shit they could pull with a next-gen AC game
...BIGGER superweapons
ULTRAWEAPONS
I REALLY hope it isn't anything like AH. It hurt me to play it after all of the others, and shit like this.

Really?
I REALLY hope it isn't anything like AH. It hurt me to play it after all of the others, and shit like this.
Mind you, sometimes some of the other games got abit too cheesy. Like, the intro when you first start AC04. And some of the dialogue in the games.
Cheesy vs literally 75 percent of the combat being qte with the other 25 dedicated to finding things to qte.
I can't wait for the announcement. I just hope the missions are a bit more open like 6 instead of AH. Also, if I remember correctly, Kottos was the name of the ESM support platforms for the Aigaion in 6.
Also, please PC release.

Holy shit, really? I didnt play AC6. Anyone know anything else about the stuff mentioned, like Ridgeback one?
Can't have an AC thread without people complaining about AH
Holy shit, really? I didnt play AC6. Anyone know anything else about the stuff mentioned, like Ridgeback one?
I don't remember what Ridgeback is. Considering Ridgeback is calling out to "Edge," Nagase's callsign, it sounds like a piece of dialogue from AC5.
The Kottos was indeed from Ace Combat 6. The Aigaion carrier had two types of support ships. The Kottos was the ESM support ship like jmchief mentioned.
Kottos in the left ship in the background, the Aigaion carrier is the big ship in the background, and Gyges defense ship is in the foreground.

I genuinely liked AH and had a lot of fun with it, but I completely understand why many didn't. I don't really care to argue with them though so I try not to bring it up like I'm making the mistake of doing right now.

I can't keep myself from getting into arguments about it because it feels like a portion of the complainers either never actually played it
And the ones who have played it act like a spin-off game raped their sister
Maybe it's best not to start talking about AH, it'll just cause an argument.
What about AC6, though? Did you guys like it?
I played up to mission 3 and then sold it. I just wasnt enjoying it.
Having never owned a PS2 until a little over a year ago, Ace Combat 6 was my first Ace Combat. After having played the rest of them from 4 and up, I like 6 for what it added, but it was weak in the story department. Gameplay-wise it was improvement in pretty much every way from the old games. It looked (and still does look) gorgeous and for the first time you really got a sense of scale in conflicts.
In the old games there would be maybe 50 planes in the air total, with maybe twice that in ground units. In 6 there could easily be hundreds of airplanes in the sky, friendly and enemy. Same goes for ground units. They were all active too, your allied tanks and jets would shoot at enemies on their own. The battlefield felt so much more alive. More like an area where large squadrons and companies of units were fighting and less like a shooting gallery. Plus, when you did an allied strike the result was always an impressive and Macross scale barrage of missiles and guns across an entire front.
The only real problems I have with 6 is that the story and characters aren't as inspired as the old games. Zero is my favorite Ace Combat because of how memorable all the characters, fights, and music were, but 6 is in my opinion the better game from a mechanics and battles point of view.
Also 6 had the best missile effects out of all the Ace Combats, including the newer Assault Horizon. Just look at all that smoke.

Tonights image.
Soon.
Going to pick up preowned AC6 tomorrow since my disk broke a few years back
Liberation of Gracemeria is one of the best AC songs, if not THE best
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWuzU1aK0jo[/hd]
Quick breakdown of the stuff I caught. Feel free to add.
Definitely the real world. Disappointing at first but…
ASF-X Shinden IIs from the Assault Horizon DLC
Stonehenge from Ace Combat 4, Strangereal
Fragments and multiple impacts across the globe
The clock ends at 2019, possibly impact date or game’s date
Crater in the middle of a coastal city
CFA-44 Nosferatu from AC6, another Strangereal exclusive
Aigaion airborne carrier from AC6, more Strangereal
"Iyuli Special Economic Zone of Russia"
PAK-FA flying over presumably the same crater city as before
Well… I don’t know. It definitely takes place in real life, but they’re throwing in all kinds of references to Strangereal. It seems like they’re trying to tie the two together in some way.
Does Strangereal take place in our future? It seems unlikely because the geography is known and too different. Maybe they’re just going to throw all the Strangereal stuff into real life? Maybe it’s something completely off the wall and it’s literal universe crossover craziness.
Your guess is as good as mine.
Those headphones have Usea on the earpieces.
EDIT: maybe. hard to tell.
[editline]19th July 2013[/editline]
Actually the more I look at it the less it looks like Usea, so nevermind
Namco Bandai has announced Ace Combat Infinity, an all-new download-only entry in the flight combat series releasing exclusively on PlayStation 3 on September 25, 2013.

September 25th?
Jesus this game just came out of nowhere, glad I have a ps3
AC4 has to be my favorite game for the PS2, although I just recently lost my disc for it. I just went and bought 4-6 though, so Im going to be having a lot of fun when I get off work after this weekend.
How are 5 and 6 in general compared to AC4? Are they steps up I'll enjoy?
EDIT: Why did I say 6, I meant zero since its the other big hit. Excuse my dumb

5 is my personal favorite, has the best story and you will really enjoy it if you like AC4
6 is good but it has a lame story and the missions don't change up very much.
Also don't forget to pickup and play Zero sometime
Oh man, all this strange-real stuff in infinity
What the hell is it gonna be?
So FYI I just wanted to let you guys know I have the entire Ace Combat collection except for Assault Horizon, which I mean to get. My collection is Air Combat, Ace Combat 2, Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere imported from Japan(it's really damn good, the story is unlike any other AC), Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies(my fist PS2 game ever), Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation (Donated to a school I was going to, unsure if I will get another as I no longer have an Xbox 360). Yeah, you could say I like this series. I've also been searching for the Ace Combat flight stick for PS2. I've also got 100% in all the games but Electrosphere.
New game looks interesting. I might be wrong, but I think I saw the nose of an X-02 in the trailer(0:39), so this one looks like a decent throwback to Strangereal planes, as well as other references like Stonehenge and the asteroids from AC04.
[editline]19th July 2013[/editline]
On second look, the plane I thought was the X-02 at 0:39 is most definitely not. Anyone got any idea what it is? A new superfighter, maybe?
