What is a speedrun?
A speedrun is running through the game speedily. :v:
While this may seem straightforward, there are actually several different types of speedruns:
•Any% - Basically means "do whatever you can to see 'The End'". Glitches and sequence breaks are encouraged, and the results can be... interesting to say the least.
Examples of this include...
Super Mario Bros. (NES) - 4:59.4
•Low% - Beating the game with minimal items/pickups/progress.
Examples of this include...
Super Mario 64 (N64) 0 Star - 9:11
•100% - Doing every goal, every mission, every sidequest, getting every pickup, basically doing everything the game has to offer in the quickest amount of time.
Examples of this include...
Quake 100% Secrets + Enemies - 48:00
Speedruns take a lot of effort, and if you watch a stream of a run, don't be surprised if you see a few hundred resets when something doesn't go to plan.
However, some of the most interesting speedruns aren't done by humans...
Tool Assisted Speedruns
Put bluntly, these are speedruns done by computers.
Put less bluntly, these speedruns are done using special emulators which render the game one frame at a time while the speedrunner chooses very precise inputs, much faster than a person physically can. The point of these runs are to see how fast the game can physically be beaten. Most of the time these use extremely game-breaking, frame-precise glitches that look amazing in real time, and sometimes can just be plain entertaining:

I know what you're asking yourself now:
But Dacheet! Where can I watch all of these amazing speedruns!?

It's so worth sitting down with a bag of chips and a drink and watching quake done quickest 100%
Any% speedruns are awesome. There are people out there who are still looking for ways to break some 10-year-old games even harder.
Here's Cosmo (you might know him as the guy who plays a lot of super monkey ball and paints his nails) doing LoZ: Ocarina of Time in less than 23 minutes, in front of a live audience, for a cancer charity. He talks about the LoZ game-breaking scene, it's really interesting.

Him talking about the glitches and such is like some sort of bank heist directory talking about all the different schedules of guards or details in the system that allow one person to steal the declaration of independence or something.

Someone did a video wherein they skip most of Ganon's tower via falling rocks, like Cosmo said:

There are also some really amazing Super Smash TAS out there. One of my favorites, espescially when it becomes Falcon v Falcon:

Moonwalking down the stage select like a boss.

Also, Speed Demos Archive should be added in OP as well.
The mother of speedrun games.

Speed Demos Archive is pretty good, they team up with Speed Runs Live every year and do a week long charity livestream of speed runs. loads of videos on their channel, wasted countless hours there.
I did download WSplit to try run myself, but i suck at games

Look 12 posts up.
I'd love to get into speedrunning but I need to find a game that I can get comfy with (and for that matter find a capture card that works with 8 without having to buy one)
In the meantime I watch SRL, mainly almo's Paper Mario: TTYD runs (fuck up window skip? instant reset 40 minutes in. bad RNG in chapter 3? instant reset. oh god it's painful)

Found this cool Sweet Half-Life speedrun with excellent annotation commentary. Be sure to leave annotations on for it, of course.
