The game is designed and directed by Fumito Ueda, and shares stylistic, thematic, and gameplay elements with his previous games, Ico (2001) and Shadow of the Colossus (2005). In The Last Guardian, the player controls a young boy who befriends a giant half-bird-half-mammal creature, Trico, and the two work together to evade guards that are after them both. The player must manipulate Trico as they would a real animal, such as luring it with food, to use it to reach high platforms or other remote places, while evading enemies.
Release Date: December 6, 2016 Website : https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/games/the-last-guardian-ps4/ Screenshots [img_thumb]http://cdn2-www.playstationlifestyle.net/assets/uploads/gallery/the-last-guardian-info-dump/the-last-guardian-14.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://static1.gamespot.com/uploads/original/1197/11970954/2886484-tlg_e315_07.png[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://images2.mobilenapps.com/data/images/full/11734/the-last-guardian.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://media.comicbook.com/uploads1/2015/06/the-last-guardian-e3-140199.jpg[/img_thumb] Trailer Gameplay [credit to Neddy for the OP content, credit to myself for using ctrl + c and ctrl + v]
Was that 12 hours pure gameplay or it includes time being stuck on a puzzle or a tricky jump ? I feel this would be best if it was a shorter game you finish in just few sittings like Ico. Then again imagine working 10 years on something that lasts just 5-6 hours :v:
This is like Clifford the dog but a video game
Been hearing that the game has some serious performance issues on the default PS4, dipping to 20FPS at times - which is reminiscent of the framerate issues Shadow of the Colossus had. Besides that, it's getting pretty good reviews! Looking forward to playing it.

Should have used one of those hairless cats and get 60 FPS.
So far the camera acceleration/smoothing is really aggravating me (and also the low fps) but the world is so beautiful.
You can pet the puppy bird This the best game
One thing I noticed while playing and I don't know if it does anything near the end of the game but I'll spoiler tag it just in case. [sp]Trico's horns grow slowly over the course of the game. I'm about 2-3 hours in and his horns look like they're fully grown now[/sp]
So how does this compare to Ico and SotC? May want to grab it for Christmas
So how does this compare to Ico and SotC? May want to grab it for Christmas
About the same as ICO for me imo. I still think SotC is the best one. I never got to finish ICO but if I had to rank them I think this one performs a little worse than ICO.

In other words I won't pick this up ehwn I get a PS4 in thwe future.
wow, this finally came out?
Ico is one of those games that I'm glad I experienced, but don't really want to suffer playing through again. The Last Guardian is probably a lot less stressful and annoying because it seems like it's a reversal of Ico's gameplay (instead of an game-long escort mission, you're the one getting escorted in a sense), but I may wait for a sale anyway. Considering I got Ico and SotC for $20, even though I did enjoy them a lot, I don't know if I can justify $60 for a game that's pretty similar in terms of content.
wow, this finally came out?
Either it did, or I'm playing the most interactive trailer ever created.
Just finished the game, yeah the game has the downside of having low framerates from time to time but the visuals were just so astounding that it made it bearable. Anyways, i personally got this game for the story and i couldn't be more amazed by it, i literally cried at the end of the game. The AI of Trico was so impressive that it made my journey through the game so much more rememberable after the credits started rolling in, it truly made me get attached to the damn beast. Also, the music was so good and complemented the atmosphere of the game perfectly. This one along with Final Fantasy XV are my favorite games this year, i just feel kinda sad that this is the end for this series of games.
Would you recommend this game for a person [read: heathen] who's never played an ICO game before?
Would you recommend this game for a person [read: heathen] who's never played an ICO game before?
None of them are really connected so yeah. On a different note i just finished the game. That ending was [sp]a hell of a lot better than I thought it would turn out. We got a happy ending instead of a gut punch.[/sp]
None of them are really connected so yeah. On a different note i just finished the game. That ending was a hell of a lot better than I thought it would turn out.
You might wanna spoiler tag that, some people might not wanna know even the slightest thing about the ending.
Would you recommend this game for a person [read: heathen] who's never played an ICO game before?
It really depends on the kind of games you like, if you prioritize story telling, art style and puzzles in a game, then The Last Guardian is definitely for you but if you really wanna make sure you'll like this kind of game i'd say play ICO (and maybe SoTC too) first, you can easily get a PS2 emulator and try it.
Fantastic game. I just finished it and Ueda really knows how to pull at my heart strings since this game and ICO are the only games that have made me cry.
Would you recommend this game for a person [read: heathen] who's never played an ICO game before?
That depends. Play ICO and see if you like it since this one is more ICO then Shadow of the Colossus. ICO only takes 4 hours to beat.
None of them are really connected so yeah. I'm a few hours in on the base PS4, and while it has awful technical problems, I'm still finding great enjoyment in this game. It's very unique and Trico is amazingly detailed and animated.
I've finally got the game via amazon.com and have played an hour or so of it. While I appreciate what the developers were trying to do here, both with the mechanics and immersion, and the sheer beauty of the environments there are some notable issues I've experienced through the whole deal: 1) Rendering Trico and the environment in a realistic fashion while everything else in your typical "ICO minimalism" flavor (including the protagonist) is a bad artistic design choice 2) The controls are ... kinda demanding, shall we say (I know I'm controlling a kid, not Nathan Drake or Lara Croft, but it's telling that at times I got a headhace during the platform sequences) 3) The camera in this game is not that good: on top of being hawkward to turn around, sometimes it locks at piss poor angles at the worst possible time (like when you are about to attempt a risky jump) 4) It never ceases to amaze me how, even in 2016, PS4 exclusives developers didn't quite understand the capacity of the hardware they are working on, so this and other games are locked at 25-30 fps constantly (the issue is worse in this game because, honestly, I can't see why a game with such design can't get over the 30 fps limit even on a PS4 Pro)
Uh what? spoilers for how they're connected: [sp]Ico is the descendant of the Wanderer and I think the group of people in you see in The Last Guardian are the same clan of people in Shadow of the Colossus[/sp]
I meant story wise you don't need to play the previous two to understand TLG.
This seems awfully similar to platformers like Uncharted. Can't really see what so unique
This seems awfully similar to platformers like Uncharted. Can't really see what so unique
Team Ico games are renowned for their minimalist aesthetic and creating emotional stories using little to no dialogue (and when there is dialogue, it's with a fake language), while Uncharted games are bombastic and cinematic. Gameplay-wise, it seems like it reverts back to Ico's simple platforming and puzzle-solving, but their most fun game (and my and most others' personal favorite) is Shadow of the Colossus, which you should definitely try out. But ultimately, people like their games because of their atmosphere and powerful storytelling, which are always centered around creating a strong bond between the player and your (often sole) companion. Unfortunately, I think the market for quieter, more emotional games have become a lot more saturated than when Team Ico's previous games came out in 2001/2005, with games like Journey, Limbo, the massive amount of indie walking simulators, Jonathan Blow games, etc. becoming a lot more popular than in the early 00s. I don't really feel the urge to immediately play TLG just yet but there's always something special about their games.
It's been a long time since a game made me sad that it ended. Whats upsetting is there isn't anything to substitute it since its so unique and Team Ico will probably not make a sequel or DLC for it.
I've finished the game. I stand by my original opinion: you can have the greatest narrative device ever and the most breath-taking visuals the game industry has to offer (althought this is not the case), but your videogame can't hold together if the mere act of playing bores the player out of his/her fucking mind at every turn. The main reveal was also extremely disappointing. So in Ico you face off an ancient witch of immesurable power and in Shadow of the Colossus you are the villain. Towards the end of this game you may be expecting to find a sorcerer and discover he/she's has been animating those armors you have met and put a spell on Trico. Maybe something related to the previous two games. Nope: [sp]the villain is a barely animated ... computer sphere thing[/sp] and no mention is made of both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Ok.
"And no mention is made of both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus" The games were barely related as it is.
Of course. It's not like the protagonist of Shadow of the Colossus gives birth to the lineage of horned humans the evil queen from Ico seeks to use to prolong her life indefinitely. Nope, no relation here.
