The Wii U and You The Wii U is Nintendo's new 8th generation console, and their first HD console at that. The system is much more powerful than the Xbox 360 or the Playstation 3, athough the specs aren't the main focus of the console. The main idea behind the Wii U is the controller: the Wii U GamePad. Much like how they introduced motion controls to the previous generation, Nintendo has brought a new idea to the table. The Wii U GamePad is a massive controller with a giant touch screen in the middle of it. Despite looking so large and clunky, it's actually very light and comfortable to hold. The GamePad The touch screen controller offers countless new ways to play. Some games can be played right on the GamePad, freeing up the TV for any of those pesky family members that want to watch the newest episode of their soap opera or the big football game. Other games utilize the GamePad for menus, or to take some of the clutter off of the main game screen. Sometimes, the games put one player on the GamePad while others play on the TV. Nintendo designed the GamePad to be as versatile as possible: Developers can use it for whatever they want. The GamePad also has a number of other features, such as a microphone, its own speakers, a camera, NFC capabilities, a gyroscope, and an accelerometer. It can even serve as your TV remote! What if I don't want to use the GamePad? Never fear! Nintendo has also created a much smaller, simpler controller for games that don't absolutely require the GamePad. This is the Wii U Pro Controller. The battery can last for up to eighty hours on one charge, which is over ten times longer than the GamePad can last. The Pro Controller can be plugged into the console using a USB cord, and there are even some ways of making the Pro Controller work as a controller on your PC! Is it backwards compatible? Indeed it is! The Wii U can play any Wii game that you shove into it. It supports all of the Wii's various controllers, including the Wii Remote, Nunchuck, Classic Controller, and Balance Board. However, the Wii U cannot play Gamecube games, nor does it support Gamecube controllers. There are some Gamecube-to-USB adapters available, but they're not licensed by Nintendo. Does it have online? Yes! After the online debacle that was known as the Wii, Nintendo has finally embraced the world of online gaming. While it has all of the standard features, such as online play and a friends list, the Wii U also provides a unique service known as Miiverse. Miiverse is like a social network for Nintendo games and players. You can post on a game's Miiverse community to ask for help on a hard level or share a funny story. Miiverse also lets you draw pictures using the GamePad, a feature which some Miiverse artists have made great use of. (Seriously, Miiverse drawings are amazing.) Price? The Wii U comes in two versions: the Standard version for $300, and the Deluxe version for $350. The Standard version is basically that: Standard. It comes with everything it will take to get the console up and running. Nothing more, nothing less. The Deluxe version, on the other hand, includes a lot more in the box. On top of everything in the Standard version, the Deluxe set comes with a couple of stands for the console and GamePad, the popular Wii U game Nintendo Land, 32 gigabytes of memory (as opposed to the Standard set's 8 gigabytes), and a special promotion. How about the games? The Wii U has been designed to favor first, second, and third party developers equally. While the Wii didn't have much in the way of third party support, the Wii U aims to change that. There are already a number of great games out for the system, but the best are yet to come. Upcoming Games What about downloadable games? The Wii U features an online store called the Nintendo eShop. Much like on the Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo eShop lets you download game demos, Virtual Console titles, DLC, indie games, and even full retail games, all in one nifty store! The eShop operates on a policy similar to Steam, allowing developers to put their titles on sale whenever they want and for however much they want. Wanna join FP in some online games? Submit your Nintendo Network ID and view others here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...rive_web#gid=1 If you want to add someone, send them a friend request through Miiverse. Adding them on the Friends List doesn't notify them, and they'll probably never know to add you back unless you hunt them down and tell them to. Trust me, I know. Credit goes to Sift for making the original OP. Credit also goes to Qaus for stealing the original OP and making changes.
Ah good, now my search bar is back to normal, but the forum is not. Anyway, how about that there Nintendo Direct tomorrow? You guys excited?
Okay, so I fell asleep for a bit and I came back. What the hell happened in the short time I was gone?
Okay, so I fell asleep for a bit and I came back. What the hell happened in the short time I was gone?
Thread caps returned.
Thread caps returned.
Ok jeez, was thinking a mod may of went insane or something because half the front page is locked and dead. [editline]13th January 2015[/editline] Almost as if someone went........... postal.... [editline]13th January 2015[/editline] and made the video game subforum... dai...
Not that it's relevant to Wii U or Nintendo, but the Minecraft section got nuked/merged with GGD.
There were moments when creating this thread I considered to make it a general Nintendo Console thread, but I wasn't sure if people would have liked it.
I would have liked a Nintendo General, not sure how the 3DS thread regulars would.
There were moments when creating this thread I considered to make it a general Nintendo Console thread, but I wasn't sure if people would have liked it.
Nah, I think it's good to split the 3DS and Wii-u, keep things less confusing.
This is the third V2 thread for Wii U iirc
This is the third V2 thread for Wii U iirc
I think we can consider those wiped fresh after they removed the original cap. This is for the new era of caps.
We could have a Wii U / Nintendo Consoles General Thread, and then a 3DS / Nintendo Handhelds General Thread. I was going to suggest that but didn't think we would have to deal with such drastic changes so soon.
No reason to do it, we usually talk about the previous consoles in the Wii U and 3DS threads anyway.
If no one makes a 3DS thread I will in a bit. One not copy/pasted and more up to date that is.
---
how much do u guys think my prerelease copy will go for on ebay
how much do u guys think my prerelease copy will go for on ebay
Thanks for the catch, just cut that out now.
My old OP was severely outdated and I apologize.
There were moments when creating this thread I considered to make it a general Nintendo Console thread, but I wasn't sure if people would have liked it.
Maybe for past consoles starting with the Wii, but I think WiiU and 3DS should remain separate. [editline]13th January 2015[/editline] Also would be awesome if you re-added the old recommendation list, I needed that for future reference.

Well whoever makes the threads be sure to add the Nintendo Network ID and Google+ Page NNID: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvJkLQPAHVMzdEMwcnBrVHR6V3dkRWFlNGtEZ2ttUmc#gid=1 Google+: https://plus.google.com/communities/100002924932719543581

I doubt they'll do the same for a tiny direct, so I'm gonna miss this.

Something big is coming, it may just be the N3DS but it's a important event
I wouldn't get too excited, it's probably just the NN3DS. Technically, Nintendo hasn't announced the console in NA yet, so they're treating it like a big announcement because Nintendo likes to pretend that the internet doesn't exist. Or it could be a new Metroid game. It's probably a new Metroid game.
Or it could be a new Metroid game. It's probably a new Metroid game.
I actually hope it isn't and they reserve the announcement for E3.
Hopefully we see star fox tomorrow, but i'm doubting it seems like something they save for E3.
I bet they'll show release dates/months for the games in the first half and new teasers for the rest of the games, like Starfox and Zelda, coming later in Fall and Holidays.
Does first time update usually take this long? I've been sitting for a good 30 minutes and it's barely 10%.
Does first time update usually take this lonht? I've been sitting for a good 30 minutes and it's barely 10%.
Take a nap or something. That shit moves at a snail's pace.
I forced my wii u off and restarted the download, it's a lot faster than before now.
I wonder if we will get any Animal Crossing news tommorow. They did tease us by saying we would get an announcement in early 2015 last December.
Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive 500gb that'd totally be cool to connect to a wii u right? I'm thinking about getting an external drive for saves/backup or what not. I heard something about it needing external power or something.
