What is Sonic?:
------------------
Sonic the Hedgehog is a platforming series produced and published by Sonic Team and their parent company, SEGA. Created by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara, the resulting final product was SEGA's mascot, a very worthy rival to Nintendo's Mario while still heavily inspired by him and some of Shigeru Miyamoto's other work.
What differentiates Sonic from other platformers, if it wasn't obvious enough, is it's huge focus on speed: while the game still incorporates powerups, obstacles and the like, it also includes fitting architecture suited for the the speed and momentum motif of the series such as springs, slopes, loops, dash pads, etc. Badniks, robots that are powered by animals that are placed inside them, take the place of mooks. Since our protagonist just happens to be a hedgehog, his main method of attacking mainly involves curling himself into a spiky ball and punishing anything that gets in the way, safely letting the animals escape their metallic prisons. Rings take the place of collectibles, but there's a twist; while you can have more than 100 of them at a time, you cannot gain anymore than 1 life after that point, getting hit by anything will make you lose all of your rings, and if you take another hit after that if you don't have any rings at all, you'll lose a life.
The plot involves the rivalry between Sonic the Hedgehog, an anthromorphic blue-colored hedgehog, and a human scientist known as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, jokingly referred to as "Eggman" by the former on occasion due to his odd egg motif. They're pretty much foils of one another: while Sonic is a nature-loving kind of guy who has an idealistic viewpoint of the world, Eggman is a scientist who wishes to take over the world through totalitarian rule, even if it means by force, for the betterment of (mainly) himself and mankind. These opposing ideals left them to be arch-enemies of one another, with Sonic continuously foiling his plans beforehand. It's up to Sonic and his friends to stop whatever scheme Eggman is up to, whether if it involves simple conversion operations on small islands, giant space stations, even all the way up to commanding the forces of nature.

The original 2D oriented titles that started it all.
Sonic 2 introduced the Spin Dash mechanic adding even more to Sonic's arsenal of attacks, and a new sidekick named Tails Miles Prower who can fly with his namesake twin tails. Sonic CD introduced the unique Time Travel mechanic and two new characters, one of them being Amy Rose who acts as the damsel in this title, and Metal Sonic whom is Sonic's robotic doppelganger and one of the finest of Robotnik's creations. Sonic 3 & Knuckles introduced Shields as powerups, the Insta-Shield technique for Sonic for when he isn't equipping a Shield making it even more easier to destroy Badniks, and another new character known as Knuckles the Echidna who acts as another antagonist of this title.
Mania, recently announced at the Sonic 25th Anniversary Party livestream event, is another entry in the series that serves as a love letter to fans of the Classic era, returning many features from the other Classic titles including a whole new mechanic known as the Drop Dash which lets Sonic simultaneously perform both a rolling Spin Attack and Spin Dash upon landing on a surface after jumping. It will be released on August 15th, 2017.
Modern Series (Adventure 1 & 2, Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, Unleashed, Colors, Generations, Lost World, Forces)
The 3D take on our beloved spiky hero.
Adventure was the first step into 3D for Sonic, adding even more techniques for Sonic and the gang such as the Homing Attack, and making Amy playable. Also introduces two new characters, E-102 Gamma who is the third in line of the E-100 series of robots built by Robotnik, and Big the Cat who's a local fisherman. First ever game to detract from Acts in Zones and introduce hub worlds with things in them such as upgrades for our heroes, and Chao Eggs for the new Chao Garden which is essentially a pet sim. It also adds a hint system to boot. Adventure 2 cuts down on the characters this time in exchange for only three unique gameplay styles and two different faction playthroughs: Sonic/Shadow stages, Mech Walker stages between Tails and Eggman, and the Treasure Hunting stages between Knuckles and Rouge for the Hero and Dark storylines respectively. Tikal and her advice is instead replaced with Omochao, a mysterious mechanical being that resembles a Chao which serves the same purpose.
Heroe's gameplay is focused around team-based objectives with three classes in particular: Speed for overall fast platforming, Flight for aerial obstacles, and Power for dealing with enemies which pack health bars now. Shadow's gameplay introduced firearm based weaponry and a morality system to the mix complete with multiple endings in different playthroughs. Sonic 06 was a reboot attempting to go back to Adventure's roots and start all over again from there.
Unleashed adds the all new Sonic Boost technique which increases Sonic's acceleration, making him plow through enemies at ease all at the cost of energy, and adds a whole new form known as the Werehog for the Night stages which, in return for Sonic's noticeable loss of speed, gives him elastic limbs and the sheer power to put those limbs into good use. Sonic Colors introduces the Wisps who are alien creatures that can give Sonic specific powerups depending on the type of Wisp. Generations is a combo of sorts of the Classic titles and later Modern titles, with stages varying from across the series timeline. Lost World returns to Adventure's mechanics and simple 3D platforming, while still retaining some features from both Unleashed and Colors. The all new Parkour technique also makes an appearance.
Another game recently announced at the Sonic 25th Anniversary Party livestream event is Sonic Forces, which is currently in the works and is planned to release in Holiday 2017. Forces runs on the newly updated Hedgehog Engine, the same game engine that Unleashed and Generations ran on, and reportedly has three unique gameplay styles - two of them being Modern and Classic from Generations and a new gameplay style revolving around a character creation system. It will not only be released for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One, but also the Nintendo Switch and PC.
The portly scientist who's one desire is to rule over everyone and everything using his technology. Eggman doesn't have a significant background, but he did seemingly look up to his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. Eggman's plans almost never change, and he's always willing to pull out all of the stops to accomplish his goal.
Eggman may possess a high IQ, but his personality is far from mature. He wants things his way, and is very temperamental when denied as such. However, despite his immaturity, he's every bit as clever as ever, able to create almost anything for his goals, and possess quite a bit of cunning and planning to carry them out. If there's one that that stands out about the doctor however, its his ego, which may only be rivaled by his long time nemesis, Sonic the Hedgehog.
No meme posts, obviously. Attempts at claiming that either the Classic era is better than the Modern era out of sheer nostalgia or vice versa will be laughed at.
Keep a minimum on talking about other adaptions of the franchise, too (AoSTH, SatAM, Archie, Boom, etc). While you're not restricted to do so, this thread is mainly to discuss the main series and spin-off games.

SEGA World for character descriptions (and TV Tropes to make up for Robotnik's lack of one).
I notice a distinct lack of Sonic Boom in the OP :v:
I notice a distinct lack of Sonic Boom in the OP :v:
Again, kind of leaving adaptions out of the picture unless multiple people start bringing up the subject.
I notice a distinct lack of Sonic Boom in the OP :v:
…And the spin-off games, perhaps? Sonic R and even the "edutainment" game for Windows?

It doesn't matter if it's a "side-canon" or whatever you want to call it to distance it from the main series, the games exist and they still count as Sonic the Hedgehog games.
I didn't exclude Other M from the OP of my Metroid thread. Sonic Boom deserves to mentioned in the OP, no matter how bad the games might be.
I hope they make more Sonic games similar to Sonic Generations because that was great.

Thanks for the feedback, OP is a bit improved.
Another reason why I put Boom on the side was that I considered the main series titles to be more important.

Gameplay wise, yes.
If the stories became just as bland if not, even more so than Generation's and equally had as many missed opportunities, then no thank you.
I agree about Generations, modern gameplay formula came close to perfection there, the only significant problems are that the game is way too easy and pathetically short. I mean it can be 100% completed in 7 hours and even one's grandma can get S rank in most stages, that's just ridiculous.
Improved the header abit, now it doesn't take as much space as it did before and lists the thread version.
Sorry for the double post but to keep the thread afloat and to attain further interest, what would you guys like to see in a (main) Sonic game in the future?
For me, I'm hoping that it brings back S3&K/Advance's differing character formula while finally scraping all the unneeded experimentation; the franchise is in dire need of regaining it's identity back.
On the side, hoping that the story is a balance between lighthearted and dark/serious, and the writing gets overall improved so it also does the franchise justice for once.
An Open world sonic game that's better handled than Sonic Boom

I just want a new Sonic Adventure style game with better story and voice acting. There were some problems with things but this is the modern times where you can go back on your problems and fix them.
One of the main issues that the franchise has is that sega seems to think that unique gimmick = sales!!!! but obviously this is not the case, what with Lost World, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic 3D Blast, and even Sonic Boom. There's not a single doubt about it that everyone had much more positive reception to games where it used only the core Sonic mechanics like Sonic Adventure(to an extent), the sequel, the original games, and, Sonic Generations.
Mario has stuck to his platformer roots while also going out on a limb for new gimmicks and that is what makes him so unique and special compared to Sonic who comes out with at the least one game a year which is usually bad and uses bad gimmick cards.
I feel as if Sega should take Nintendo's route and make games true to the original series but have a side series of games related to Sonic where they can test out new styles and ideas so that they don't get absolutely slammed each year.

We can all agree that the social media representative of sonic is the best thing.
Well, this is meant to be the main Sonic discussion general as it is, isn't it? Even if it's been kind of dead for obvious reasons, well..
Surprise surprise, outta fucking nowhere Sonic Lost World is coming to PC/Steam for $30. Hopefully this will reinvigorate the PC modding community, or get more re-releases like Unleashed or Colors.

They need to bring Shiro Maekawa (of Sonic Storybook series) back, at least in my opinion.
For those who didn't know there is the excellent Unleashed mod for Sonic Generations which adds the eight levels from the console title and they are amazing to play.
So over a month later and the Sonic Lost World PC port came out earlier this month. I doubt it'll reinvigorate conversation or anything despite modders kicking into high gear already, but hey, for those who didn't get it on the Wii U or didn't have a Wii U, well..
.. I dunno. It's an extremely all-over-the-place game, and the port is pretty bare-bones too. Nothing really notable, can't rebind the controller buttons but can rebind the keyboard, some asinine controller decisions to fit things like the Omochao missions and the Item Box onto the Left and Right Analog Sticks, and other little quirks like no proper 1080p UI so it looks a little low-res. If you must own Sonic games, especially on the PC, then this is a better version to get than the Wii U since mods will inevitably extend its lifetime a bit, but there's better ports and better Sonic games out there because they didn't really tweak or change the gameplay at all from the questionable and mixed title we got two years ago
The only distinct positive I can give the port on its own is that the video and audio settings aren't stuck in a launcher like previous 3D Sonic games on PC.
So, you guys looked at that sonic boom cartoon? What do you people think about it?
So, you guys looked at that sonic boom cartoon? What do you people think about it?
From what I heard it's much more polished in comparison to the Boom series games yet isn't "great" just good.
You guys know Freedom Planet right? It is a 2D platformer with lots of likeness to the 2D Sonic games.
They are making another one.

Aww yeah.
Freedom Planet had some awesome gameplay that fondly reminded me of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
And story may have been cliche as hell along with characters which had grating voices but I still enjoyed it for what it was.

Oh wow I didn't even know this thread exist.
I'm eagerly waiting for them to announce this year's anniversary game. Are they aiming towards classic Sonic this time around?
