Mad Max is a third person open world action adventure game with a focus on vehicular and melee combat, developed by Avalance Studios (Just Cause series, Renegade Ops, The Hunter) and published by Warner Bros. Interactive (Arkham series, Mortal Kombat, The Witcher)

You take the role of Max Rockatansky, an ex-cop who's family was run down by a gang of ruthless bikers. Doomed to wander the post-apocalyptic wasteland, Max is on an endless search for peace and solace from the past that haunts him. The wasteland is a savage place, however, and the only way to survive it is with a set of wheels.

You begin the game with Max's iconic Interceptor stolen, and Max left for dead. You meet a hunchbacked mechanic named Chumbucket, who views cars and motors as his religion. He sees Max as a divine saint, sent to him to help him complete the ultimate wasteland vehicle: his Magnum Opus.
From there on, its up to Max and Chum to get back what was stolen from him, and to do that he must get past the wasteland warlord, Scabrous Scrotus, who holds terrifying rule over the area.

On foot, Max is a capable fighter. Melee combat is similar to the Arkham melee system. Max has a light attack, heavy attack, and counter move, as well as the ability to pick up weapons like clubs and axes, or shivs to perform deadly finishers on stunned opponents. Chaining together attacks will cause Max to enter Fury Mode, where his attack power is greatly increased and he is able to perform brutal new finishing moves. Max also has his trusty shotgun at his hip, which can be pulled out at any time during combat. Though the shotgun should be used conservatively, as ammunition is scarce in the wasteland.
To keep his health in check, Max will need to find food and water, both of which are in short supply. Max keeps a canteen on him that he can fill up at any water source. Drinking water will refill your health, though taking a drink leaves you vulnerable to attack. Food can also be found around the wasteland, either in the form of a can of dog food, or even by eating the maggots off a rotting corpse.

The real meat of the game, however, is in your car. The Magnum Opus has several offensive capabilities, the most standard of which is simply running into other cars. You can boost forward to add extra punch to a ram attack, as well as do quick side rams at the push of a button. Chumbucket rides in the back of your car manning a harpoon gun. The harpoon has several uses, from tearing armor from enemy cars, to yanking off tires, to even pulling the driver out of the windshield. The harpoon can also be loaded with explosive tips, dubbed Thunderpoons, turning it into a powerful rocket launcher. Other upgrades include side mounted flamethrowers called Sideburners, that you can use to roast any broadside enemies. And of course, Max can still use his shotgun from the driver's seat, in order to blow up gas tanks, or blast an enemy who's hopped onto your car. If your car ends up taking too much damage, slow down and let Chum hop to the front and make some repairs.

The Magnum Opus has a robust customization system, allowing you to purchase upgrades to mold it into whatever kind of vehicle you want. There is a plethora of options at your disposal: tires, engines, exhaust, suspensions, body, paint, weapons, and so on. Upgrades come with buffs and debuffs however. If you want a ramming grill, it's going to make your car more front-heavy, and detract from your top speed and handling. If you want speedy tires that can grip the asphalt, you're going to sacrifice offroading capabilities. There is no "perfect" Magnum Opus, meaning that you'll have to change it up to suit your situation. Luckily, making changes to the Magnum Opus can be done on the fly, by simply opening the customization menu and swapping whatever parts you want. The changes are applied instantly with no need to visit a garage.
The customization system extends to Max as well, allowing you to change his abilities and appearance.

As you explore the wasteland, you'll meet all kinds of bizarre characters. You'll need to interact with stronghold leaders in order to gain the resources you need to take down Scrotus, though they'll usually need something in return. Strongholds will be where you get most of your missions, as you help the people bolster their defenses against Scrotus and his Warboys. Out in the wastes there are plenty of side activities as well. Raid outposts to find valuable scrap and reduce the threat of Scrotus. Attack roving convoys to unlock unique upgrades for the Magnum Opus. Or find a hot-air balloon to get a birds-eye view of the wasteland and scout out points of interest with your binoculars.
However, bandits aren't the only threat in the wasteland. Environmental effects can prove to be just as deadly. Swirling dust-devils may fling your car through the air, or a toxic sandstorm may whip up, forcing you to avoid deadly debris and devastating bolts of lightning. Foolhardy players may even attempt to venture past the boundaries of the map and into the "Big Nothing", where the deadly storms will make short work of you and your car, but with enough skill, you may find rare parts for your opus.
Mad Max releases Sept. 1st 2015 for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC

F.A.Q.
Q. Does this have anything to do with Fury Road?
A. Not really. While there are some nods, such familiar imagery like War Boys and Gas Town, or Scrotus being one of Immortan Joe's sons, it is not a direct movie tie in, and features unique characters and a unique story. That also means no Furiosa, sorry.
Q. Is Max voiced by an Austrailian?
A. Yes.
Q. Did George Miller have any input on the game?
A. Yes. Early on the studio worked a lot with Miller, and they had access to Fury Road as it was being developed.
Q. How much of the game is going to be on foot, and how much in a car?
A. According to Avalanche, it's about a 40/60 split between on foot/in vehicle.
Q. How is the car handling?
A. According to most people who've played it, very good!
Q. Who is doing the PC port?
A. Avalanche is. Considering how well all their PC games run there shouldn't be any worry of another Arkham Knight happening.

Q. How big is the map?
A. There aren't any specific numbers yet, but it looks immense. Considering it's a game made by Avalanche studios this shouldn't be much of a surprise.
Q. Multiplayer?
A. Nope. Though seeing as Avalanche's engine is mod friendly, who's to say there might not be a Mad Max multiplayer mod in the future like JC2?

Q. September 1st? Isn't that the same day-
A. Yes, yes, it's the same day Phantom Pain comes out and we all know how it's going to kill the sales for Mad Max. This is a Mad Max thread, not a Metal Gear one, so let's keep the discussion like that.

It looks ok.
it's going to get overshadowed completely due to having the same release date as metal gear so it's already going to bomb pretty hard. how is anyone going to compete with that
it also doesn't really have that much to offer in terms of a game. i'm sure it'll be awesome but it'll definitely be one of those games that'll form a loyal community for a couple weeks before becoming obscure. definitely because of the release date and generally bad marketing. does anyone even know/care that this is coming out?
[editline]16th August 2015[/editline]
I really want to get it but I can't justify regular retail price for it, especially if it does end up being one of those games you forget about in a couple weeks like watchdogs and far cry 4
Yeah. While the car customization is cool.. it just doesn't have that much to really offer.
It doesn't help that it's a post-apocalyptic open world game being released a few months before THE post-apocalyptic open world game.

That's all a possibility, though it feels like it also has a chance of becoming a sleeper hit like Just Cause 2 or Shadow of Mordor.
If you compare the situation: Metal Gear is a well established franchise with a large fanbase and has been getting boatloads of marketing (especially with the recent Konami situation). However, it doesn't have the same mass market appeal as something like Far Cry or Watchdogs. Stealth games are an inherently niche genre, and Metal Gear has such a bizarre and complex story that may put off newcomers to the series.
Mad Max is a new franchise that combines familiar elements (popularity of open world games, Arkham combat) while also resurrecting the neglected genre of vehicular combat games. It's also riding on the tail of Fury Road, which was a massive hit and brought the franchise back into the public eye, though there is still the stigma against movie tie-in games. Avalanche has also been getting some coverage lately due to Just Cause 3, and people excited for that will probably be aware of Mad Max's existence as well. There may even be a modding community, due to Avalanche's engine being fairly modder friendly in JC2.
Right now it's still up in the air. Whether Mad Max turns out to be a run of the mill Ubisoft-style open world game or a refreshing take on the genre like Shadow of Morder. Nobody's saying it's going to compete with MGSV but that doesn't mean it's dead in the water.
This is like a way more face paced fallout + cars and a larger map to match.
Unfortunately I like the slow pace fallout has sometimes. I probably won't buy it as it releases unless there are some crazy good reviews.

The only thing similar to Mad Max and Fallout is the setting.
Fallout is a FPS/RPG
Mad Max is a vehicular combat/third person fighting game.
I actually want a multiplayer deathrace gamemode.
imo it would have been wiser to give the game another release date. Even a week ahead would have been wiser. that's all it takes from being an overshadowed cult classic or a smashing success that earns enough to become a franchise on its own. i'm really hoping it does well though since i've been following it since I first heard about it

I'm curious who came up with the date. I'm assuming WB since that seems more like a publisher's job, but it's a real wonder as to why.
they probably had the release date set long before konami revealed metal gears'
Wasn't MGS5 announced back in 2012?
I'm about 100% sure the mgsv september 1 release date was just revealed at e3 or something really recent
Sometime back in march according to a gamespot article. Most likely PAX or GDC.
they probably had the release date set long before konami revealed metal gears'
I doubt it, considering that Mad Max was originally slated to come out 2014.
Looking at old news sites it seems like both games announced their release dates at virtually the same time in the first couple days of March.
I'm keeping my eye on this game, if nothing else than for something to play to break up the marathon sessions of Fallout and MGSV in the upcoming months. The success of the film is also going to play a pretty good role (no pun intended) of popularizing this game. People loved the movie, think 'why not' and then pick up the game.
This is definitely gonna be a steam sale pick up if nothing else.
I'm excited because for one, I used to love vehicular combat games as a kid, and there aren't nearly enough good ones.
And for two, I love the Mad Max series and the world George Miller created, and I feel like the game is really doing it justice. For instance, there are two warring factions who are at odds because one believes in sacred death by blade, while the other believes in sacred death by fire. I love that shit.
I think I remember hearing that this has the nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor
If thats the case, that'll be fucking sweet. The mad max universe is perfect for it, having all these different guys trying to dynamicly fight for power over the wasteland

I don't think it does. None of the official media has made any mention of it.
a nemisis system would be cool. I'm at least hoping that there'll always be strongholds to capture or do whatever it is you do in them; mordor was great because there was always an enemy presence and not just you wiping out the entire area
I'll have to read up on how that whole thing works. I'm sure there'll always be baddies in the dunes but it'd be kind of lame if you just clear out bunkers or whatever and they're never a threat again. a constantly populated world with big threats is always great. mordor did it all really well: my biggest problem with mordor was that it was too easy once you got all of the health buffs and combo kill stuff. you could just drop an army without any kind of danger at all since each kill pretty much regenerated all of your health and nobody could damage you. even bosses weren't a threat. I don't think max has all of the RPG element stuff mordor did but my biggest worry is that the mobs might generally be too easy later in the game
then again avalanche has never disappointed. I remember JA2 starting off extremely easy and then some areas were completely abysmal because of the military presence so they probably have it all figured out
a nemisis system would be cool. I'm at least hoping that there'll always be strongholds to capture or do whatever it is you do in them; mordor was great because there was always an enemy presence and not just you wiping out the entire area
Here's how the game plays out, from what I understand: there are primary strongholds where you meet the stronghold leaders and form alliances with them. They give you missions, and completing the missions gives them the ability to upgrade the stronghold and offer you more resources or give you special parts for your car.
Out in the wasteland you've got outposts. Outposts will need you to take out the perimeter defenses with your car, which can range from sniper towers to mortar emplacements to just big metal gates. Different outposts are taken down in different ways, for instance, a gas transfer outpost needs to have all it's gas storage tanks destroyed in order to conquer it. Other outposts may have bosses in them called Top Dogs, who need to be killed to complete it. Outposts are usually full of scrap to find, as well as project parts that can be used to upgrade your stronghold.
Then there are also convoys that roam around the map. To take out a convoy you need to destroy the lead vehicle, but it is heavily armored and well defended by other vehicles. If you destroy the convoy you're rewarded with a hood ornament that can add different kinds of buffs to your car.
In each region of the map there is a threat level posed by Scrotus. The higher the threat level the more of Scrotus' patrols will be roaming the area. Taking over outposts, destroying convoys, ripping down scarecrows and killing snipers will lower the threat level.
Though Scrotus isn't the only enemy faction from what I've seen. There are Roadkill, who are basic raiders who don't pose too much of a threat. Buzzards (like in fury road) drive more advanced vehicles and are a bit more hardy (they also only seem to come out at night, though I could be wrong about that) then there are Redeyes, who I haven't heard much about. They seem to be underground dwellers.
I've seen some pictures of the map and the number of outposts, convoys, etc, is immense. I think it's a safe bet that there's always gonna be something to do.
bought a preorder key off of g2play for $30. you don't get the pre-order bonuses as far as I'm aware (the ripper preorder car) since third party sellers don't usually get all of the bonuses, but for half price it's a steal. you can get mgsv and mad max both for the price of one game at full retail. i buy all of my preorders from g2 and i've never been ripped off. if you're willing to try it, it's a pretty good deal

yeah, i just watched that 20 minute video you linked and they kind of summarized all you can do in it. the map really does look bigger in the perspective in the video. definitely pretty stoked now
I have the game preordered along with Fury Road. September 1st is going to be Mad Max day...for a few of us anyway.
personally i can't wait for the game, it just seems like they've kept showing us the same stuff over and over though in the gameplay videos.

The hour long stream the devs did revealed a lot of interesting new stuff. One thing that surprised me was the variety in vehicular enemies. There was a car called the Drop Kicker that would run ahead of your car and drops small bombs in front of you. There are also quite a few things I've noticed in videos that they haven't talked about at all, like minefields in the map, or the dog companion.
might be worth noting that WB recently also put out Arkham Knight and the PC port is a stutterfest and still not patched, be wary of this game
