You can make your own unique avatar, make your own unique objects for any purpose, and generally just go nuts with creativity. There are thousands of places to check out in SL and an entire community of people to meet. Beware though, because the game has a rather infamous community that is often documented but rarely understood. There is a variety of things, including but not limited to: -Socializing with friends -Building objects/vehicles/houses/etc., which can be sold on the marketplace to make real life $$$ -Going to video game arcade spots -Finding dance clubs in order to listen to live DJs -Exploring the world in search of new and weird places -Joining a Second Life Military Community and fight others -Griefing and generally poking at the uptight and infamous community -Doing lewd things (pretty much a given considering the nature of SL) Not really. You are able to do whatever you want in SL without spending a cent if you know where to look or what to do. There are tons of freebies you can pick up and some places can give away free Lindens (L$, for short. the game's currency.) You can also learn how to make things in the game to sell for L$. L$ can also be converted to real money via Paypal, which means you can earn real currency from Second Life. If you want to buy or sell things in Second Life without going to/using an in-world store, go to https://marketplace.secondlife.com/ Make an account at http://www.secondlife.com , then download a “Viewer” to run Second Life on. A viewer is basically the executable that you run in order to log onto Second Life. There is a first-party viewer that can be downloaded off of the SL website, but there are many third-party viewers that people prefer over the basic SL viewer. These include: Firestorm Viewer: by far the most popular third-party viewer. It is essentially the first-party viewer with a ton of new features and bug fixes added in - http://www.firestormviewer.org/downloads/ Alchemy Viewer: less features than Firestorm, but has a nice UI - https://alchemyviewer.org/pages/downloads.html CTRL+ALT+Studio: A viewer based off a older version of Firestorm which has support for Oculus VR, Microsoft Kinect, and Xbox 360 controllers - http://ctrlaltstudio.com/viewer Black Dragon: Do you love your graphiks? Black dragon is the viewer for you. Make everything look fancy and beautiful - https://bitbucket.org/NiranV/black-dragon-viewer/downloads Other third party viewers can be found on the Second Life wiki, located here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_Viewer_Directory The Facepunch clubhouse is the main hub for FP SL endeavors. We have recently had a complete overhaul of moderation at the clubhouse along with a new ruleset that most Facepunchers will probably like. Clubhouse here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Philudoria/88/196/52 Outside of the clubhouse, Second Life has a destinations guide, which will allow you to see what Linden Labs considers premium quality stuff along with live events and popular places: http://secondlife.com/destinations You can also use the search function to look for anything you want within SL. Considering the length of time Second Life has been online, you’ll probably find whatever you need to. A common trend ever since the beginning of Second Life has been observing and prodding the infamous community. It is hard to explain the levels of terrible it is, so here are several Youtubers who have done it: charliezzz/Esteban Winsmore - probably one of the more famous Youtubers who has documented the community, highly recommended viewing Vinny (Vinesauce) - occasionally goes on SL, playing the character of ‘Ralph Bluetawn’, a hideously deformed blue goblin man. Vinny actually has experience with Facepunch, specifically the clubhouse, and several Facepunchers appeared in his video because of this. His SL playlist is here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHmR7c8zbVZTS_DuekJeWwWZ4BknInJ6X DanielfromSL- Daniel’s adventures through Second Life often exhibit a deadpan sense of humour, provoking the community with as little as physically possible Scandinavian Prince - takes a more hands-on approach in his videos, but often uses misinformation and mind games to his advantage BedBananas - plays a baby version of Ryan Gosling’s character from the movie Drive, driving a pumpkin instead of an actual car: Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RJUpQ6ltWk Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKjU6CTujgU There's also some very cringeworthy documentaries people made of Second Life, one of which is made by the Oprah Winfrey Network. Great for a cheap laugh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUwD7u7wwcY If you want to help support Facepunchers who make products in Second Life, this is the section for you! If you create stuff in Second Life and you want your store to be listed, please let us know via PM or in SL. The easiest way to get listed in the OP is if you PM us with the following template:
Name of store Short description of what kind of products the store sells Link to in-world and/or SL Marketplace store
Creators: Name: [QAUS] Description: Mostly materials. I also provide custom material work done for anything/everything (not diffuse textures). L$100 for first texture + L$20 for each additional texture upload. I'll even teach you few tricks you can use on any object. Contact me directly (Steam, SL, FP) with inquiries. Link: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/153388 Name: VGK Creations Description: I sell pretty much whatever I feel like selling, but I aim to sell more playable games in the future. I specialize specifically in scripting, but I do have some small skill with texturing and modeling. If I'm available for such, I can also provide custom scripting work. 100 L$/hour for scripts intended for non-commercial purposes (freebies, personal use) and 750 L$/hour for commercial purposed scripts. To get an idea of what that means, the more complicated and bigger your project is, the longer it will take for me to get it done. Contact me in SL for estimates on what you have in mind. rates are subject to change, and these listed rates may or may not be accurate in the future. Ask me in-world to confirm upon this. Wow, we actually made it to v2? I'm... not sure how I feel about this.
Wow, we actually made it to v2? I'm... not sure how I feel about this.
manual reboot, not a 5000 post reboot. main reason being 2013 OP is super outdated. you can go back to your regularly scheduled Program, "why does kemono suck or rock: episode 17"
I'm not too interested in furry porn or ERP, but you know what really gets my dick hard? Managing my own trade empire. I can model, texture, and script. But I hear it costs money to upload your own models and textures, maybe sounds too. I know you can model using basic primitives, and I was able to make a physics-affected american flag that shouts, "GOD BLESS THE USA!!" when you click on it, but I doubt there is a shortage of american flags when its one of the only basic textures given to you. Whats the exchange rate for uploading content? I need to know how much starting capital to pool into my little business venture.

That's fairly cheap. I wonder, you know how you can drive cars in SL? Would it be possible to put a functional store on a car and drive it around? I need to know how feasible it would be to drive a taco van that players can actually buy from.

Then I'll sell taco vans for those who want to make a quick buck but cannot model or texture, and they will spread far across the land, like a plague.
Then I'll sell taco vans for those who want to make a quick buck but cannot model or texture, and they will spread far across the land, like a plague.
Good luck with that honestly, because there is plenty of competition out there for one. Additionally, there's also trying to get your product to be known. If you don't have land to sell your products (which is expensive compared to simply uploading images, sounds and mesh models), you can pretty much use the marketplace to sell your things. The marketplace will take 5% of the profit, however. Nowadays that's pretty much how small businesses in SL get their feet off the ground otherwise. You got to be good at what you do. That means knowing the scripting language (which is trash on so many levels; as a scripter I can personally confirm this.) and knowing exactly how SL handles meshes and textures. Be sure to experiment before you actually get into business, and you can see if making dosh in SL is for you.
For some reason, I've always found SL to be one of those games which are pretty hard to get into. I might give it another in the future though.
Then I'll sell taco vans for those who want to make a quick buck but cannot model or texture, and they will spread far across the land, like a plague.
Tacovans that you can buy that also function as affiliate vendors for you would be a pretty good idea, actually. There's loads upon loads of pyramid schemes in SL like this, and the worst part is that they work fucking flawlessly.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/15xfB7z.jpg[/t]
It varies.
thats $2.50 without the transaction fee if you wanted to get L$ spending only $2.50 (which is the minimum amount of money you have to spend to get L$), you get 546
By the way, the part about simhops will include this Friday. Future simhops will usually have notification from the Steam group as well as this thread, complimenting the notices from the SL group itself. Simhops are usually when the clubhouse is at full traffic, so don't miss out.
It varies.
Don't be stupid, use limit buy/sell.
the kawaii vip club saga continues the wolf texture was attached to the group notice
Oh cool I can go back to the clubhouse again.
I got a list of a few recommended places that new members of SL should check out for exploration/sandbox purposes. The OP is free to add this, and I suggest doing so. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/New Script/204/53/28 (sandbox) New Script - A general-rated, Japanese sandbox that's 1/4th of this sim. For the most part, it's a quiet sandbox. Gets a lot of brazillian visitors... I'll make this clear right now, usually brazillian Second Lifers are so uptight they'll start rezzing griefing objects on you if you merely bump into them, but as long as you leave them be, it should be a good place to learn the ropes of SL building. The other 3/4ths of the sim are otherwise neat places to check out. North of the sandbox contains a bunch of various interactive objects that are basically simple script demonstrations. You can otherwise walk around and learn partially of Japanese SL culture. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/kowloon/144/13/24 (shop) Kowloon - A Japanese build that was established around sometime 2007 and has hardly changed since then, so most of the build is made out of prims and older scripts, with a few occasional mesh things that have been added at some later time, but it's still a very nice looking relic for its time. It functions as a shopping district most of all, but there are a few neat things you can check out if you take the time to brush through it all. There's also a small sandbox and fast teleport systems you can access if you join the group. There may be a few things here that are difficult to grasp given the language barrier. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Avaria Tor/133/135/302 (shop) Grendel's Children - Sim that sells primarily monster and animal avatars and otherwise all sorts of interesting avatars for usually very cheap prices. There's a lot of freebie avatars you can make use of too while you're here, so it's a good place to shed free of your default starting avatar if you so desire to be some walking toaster or something. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Torley/126/128/22 (ARTE) Torley Island - The artsy island of Torley, one of the Lindens of Second Life. He puts a lot of emphasis in creativity. The guy also has a bunch of tutorial videos for SL that he'll always start off with his famous "Friendly Greetings". Check out this island though, it's an experience of exploration unlike any other. There's also a few freebie textures you are able to grab while you're here. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Chouchou/180/163/21 (ARTE) Chouchou - Artsy sim. Enable media and turn on the music for the full experience. Explore and look around. Not much to be said. I got a few other places in mind, but I'll be going back to homework before I bother gathering all the locations.

The torso proportions look strange... Maybe it's just the screenshot.
It's the screenshot notto disu shitto agen

Rena and I have discussed body proportions before to great length. Trust me, he knows full well it's not the picture. Rena likes yaoi hands.
longrena is long
Nice op. even having a place to list creators instead of saying you can just steal stuff. :v:

I've been looking around SL, trying to find empty rp sims I've noticed evidence in tons of these locations that the sims have been empty for year(s) with very low traffic. They're being paid for but not used. You'll find like, event pictures and stuff online from years ago but the place has <1000 or less traffic, maybe <2000 if you're lucky, which is pretty low. Note: A full primed sim costs an upwards of 300USD a month. It's always super amusing to see sims that are being paid for but never used Some great looking locations http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Incantre/131/127/1675 the most interesting one by far I've seen IMHO http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Glanmire/188/187/1413 http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Sea/128/128/25 http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Infinity%20Island/234/242/21 (this ones a bit active though) heres a cool ?italian? city http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Yumix%20Prada/116/87/30 with interesting neighboring sims. Pretty active too. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/TSO%20Restoration/162/180/21 not a rp sim but still interesting http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Serenol/196/176/43 Not sure what this is, but it's cool to chill here. No rezzing though.
