High school is tough; especially when people are out to get you.
Life is Strange is a new game published by Square Enix and is being developed by Dontnod Entertainment. You might know of their other game, Remember Me
So long story short Life is Strange is a five-part episodic game in the similar vein to Telltale's The Walking Dead and other games. It's very hands-ony and has a lot of choices and outcomes for those choices. It's also got an amazing story, and the animation, the acting and the writing are all incredibly high quality.
You also have the ability to "rewind" the game with your teenybopper time traveling abilities in case you make a decision and didn't like the outcome. Maybe it's easy mode; that's up for you to decide.
I'd tell you guys about the story but trust me, it's fucking GOOD. All you have to do is look further below and figure it out for yourself. I already got massive chills and the beginning credits haven't even rolled in yet

When the trailer mentioned similarities to Gone Home, I was like "UGHGGGGH", but after I saw some crazy shit happening later on in the trailer, it seemed pretty promising. I might check this out.

The Trailer is the one thing that stopped me buying this actually.
A niche anime game is in the Steam top sellers while this is nowhere to be found, I think it's safe to say that this is Gone Home all over again with reviewers praising it hardcore while everyone else dislikes it.
Except that no reviewers have said anything about it yet and neither have many other people?
Do the quotes in the trailer from different games journalism outlets mean anything to you?
But they're not from reviews
But the people from those outlets who look at games to write about them are reviewers. I never explicitly said that the reviews themselves would be full of praise.
Yeah but what they said about it from previews has nothing to say about what they're gonna say about it in reviews. There's been plenty of games that had good things said about them in previews but then got shit reviews.
The game's about a shy teenage girl going to college fated with the best superpower a young adult can ask for. Some may like it some may not with the whole tryhard modern youngster shit so whatever.
What really sets this apart from your conventional Telltale game is that you can literally explore and exhaust ALL AVAILABLE OPTIONS/CHOICES and take the "best" route in a single playthru thanks to the rewind mechanic which they obviously salvaged from Remember Me which is also a game they made (which I think ends up not selling well. Sad, because that game's got some fucking amazing sci-fi atmosphere)
This game suffers from horrible lip-sync, if that bothers you a fuckload then you best avoid this game. Otherwise it is a better than decent supernatural story that dwell semi-well into young women's life.
I also don't even know when's episode 2 is coming so it is a little difficult for me to stomach the wait, I REALLY hope it doesn't end up like Broken Age Act 2.
evidently the second episode is slated for some time in march. honestly i'm pretty stoked
the lip syncing is pretty weird on account that everything else is mocap quality. and that voice acting, hnngg.
in light of the discussion at hand, though, you can't really trust if a game is good or not based on how many people have bought it on steam. the amount of positive feedback from the user reviews should speak for themselves. you have to remember steam's main userbase play CSGO and football manager 2013, not adventure games
I wouldn't really call the acting and writing "high quality"... There are just too many forced lines in there for me.
I watched some 10 minutes of gameplay, and it's all a touch too cliché for my taste:

They are an art class of 5 or 6 girls, and they pick on each other as if they were a large group? From my personal experience of school, this doesn't happen. If there are 5 people in this class, it means the class is most likely being taught because they're all enthusiasts and went to great lengths to convince someone to find room in the school's lesson plan for a class of just 5. These girls would definitely stick together.
The teacher's speech is so refined at times that I have a hard time believing that this is someone talking off the top of their head. And then at other times, he drops his language level by about 3 notches.
Max hopes she didn't embarrass that other girl with her answer? Why? Is that other girl her mother, or her tutor or something?
Max wants to hide in the bathroom because of her "meltdown"? Where was the meltdown? I didn't see a meltdown. I saw an everyday situation of not paying attention and getting caught not knowing stuff.
And don't even get me started on the restroom scene. How convoluted was that?
Also, the teacher's lip movements weren't in synch with what he was saying when he was up close in the picture. It looked like out of an early 2000's game. So much for the "high quality" animation.

great. embedding that video through the "advanced" editor didn't work, and now I can't edit my post anymore.
The first 10 minutes you watched actually has their reasons.
The player who is playing the game skipped a crapton of intractable stuff which sort of explains the back story, factions and shit that has been going around the school. Besides, there's only one bitch in the class.
Yeah whatever with the teacher, he's supposed to be one of the best international photographer who came to lecture or something.
Max is a freshman (2nd week?), she's shy as fuck and stuff, amateur artist/photographer problem etc. I think Max is Kate's only friend, actually idk why she said that either.
I can already see that this game isn't for the masses, judging from the amount of people (from the video) disliking it. I guess only those who liked Adventure Puzzle games picked this up, even then the extremely poor lip-sync is totally bringing the quality down. (I know they aren't a primarily English speaking company, but come on, fix this shit) The graphics isn't complete crap tho, it just looks like it has way lower budget than usual.
The first episode is like the first episode to a TV show: you get introduced to the cast of characters and/or get a chance to learn their intentions and their relationship to the protagonist. the only truly annoying thing is the poorly acted inner monologue you have. that's the only forced acting that's really in the game
tbh i'm pretty hyped for the second episode. the first one kind of drags on because nothing too exciting happens until towards the end, and then by the time it's over you're really wanting to see what happens

Thanks for pointing all that out. All in all, I'm still intrigued.

but a little put off by the fact that it took Max longer than me to figure out that she could just give her teacher the right answer, and that only then we can actually choose the obviously correct course of action. I wonder if there's less handholding during the rest of the game and if so, how they managed to give the player more freedom for his own thoughts.

Nah..I don't know. After watching for a while longer...too few choices for me. When she talks to the principal or whoever that is, there is no option for telling the whole truth, as in mentioning that the dude with the gun threatened girl who was trying to blackmail him (and maybe even that Max rang the alarm to save her) Why not? It doesn't make much sense to hide that part.
I, surprisingly, enjoyed it. Actually kind of irritated I have to wait til March for the second episode. I'm curious where all this is going and if there's going to be an underwear scene.
I enjoyed it too... game has nice tone, we'll see where episode 2 takes us
also PS4 version comes with pretty nice theme

only played about 20 minutes so far, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. only thing I've found so far that pisses me off is the character's lips when they're talking.
The first episode leaves great impression with world setup and character development. The painting-like graphics, UI, and beautiful music create relaxing experience for me.
As people said, there are few mistakes like lip-sync issue for most characters and some awkward dialogue.
I'm looking forward to next episode and can't wait for outcome of my choices.
I assume she has a reason for using a Polaroid camera aside from the fact that she's just a hipster?
I assume she has a reason for using a Polaroid camera aside from the fact that she's just a hipster?
I rated you disagree, but then I found an answer:
With a polaroid camera, the result is not as easily discardable as with a digital camera because polaroid films cost shittons of money and you can't just go ahead and take 20 pictures and throw 19 away, and it's not repeatable either because those things take a minute to develop, and by the time you find out if your photo is good, the situation has most likely changed.
I do like the idea. It's not a hipster thing, it's more like going back to a time when there was a "risk" involved in photography.
Also because she's studying photography. And there's really nothing hipster about her.
There's nothing wrong with someone in photography class who prefers something older. It makes their photos seems more genuine. Not really a hipster thing. Thinking about replaying it with different choices. My first play through I stuck with just the one choice and didn't rewind.

wow, that's probably the most obscure movie reference in a video game. I thoroughly enjoyed it when I was a kid though, probably because I had never heard of Final Fantasy at the time and didn't really have any expectations when I watched it. I was just like "OOOOH DA GRAPHICS" even though it was just a movie.
I bought this on a whim and I was really surprised by how good the first episode was, I haven't felt this intrigued by a game in a long time.
I bought and finished the first episode in around ~3 hours. I was surprised to see that I missed a ton of choices/actions.
Wow, I was really caught off guard by how good the game was. The story seems interesting, and the dialouge was really well written. I'll admit that the voice acting + lip syncing could be really shabby at times, but other than that its a really great game.
This game was not what I thought it would be. I came in expecting a shitty gone home-type story with Telltale gameplay. I am glad that I was wrong.
Also, that "journalist" comparing Gone Home to this game is a fucking idiot. That's not an honor, and I am glad that it's nothing like GH.
There's a lot of final fantasy/anime/square enix product placement in this game because it's a square enix game. if you play murdered: soul suspect all of the desktops at the police station are all running deus ex human revolution (because every cop wants to be a cyberpunk detective)
also in regards to the polaroid camera, you can't really say anything to contradict why she doesn't have a digital camera because it's modern day: everyone has laptops, flash drives and the teacher and the rich bitch victoria all have digital cameras. it's never explained why you use a polaroid camera other than it looks better in a frame in the game than just "digital still image" or a 35mm slide

This is why i wait until the entire thing is out. Don't have to wait and i get the entire story at once.

I bought Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within both on DVD and Blu-Ray when they first came out. Both have a "This plays in a PlayStation 2/3 sticker."
Not really a classic though.
Not my type of game so I'm not playing it, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the soundtrack. It's got some great artists, like Jose Gonzalez and Alt-J.

I love it so far. Someone on my steam acted like it was the disease because the game is apparently for "homosexuals and hipsters" after reading a rock paper shotgun review
I got some comments by someone like that too, needless to say that person is no longer on my steam friends list.
