DO NOT POST UNBLACKED SPOILERS, THIS MEANS CLASS STORY, COMPANION STORY AND FLASHPOINTS
Welcome to the official SW:TOR thread!
Looking to start a character, but don't know where to play? Want to add your name to our player list? Here's our current list of players:

WHAT IS STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC?
Star Wars: The Old Republic is a story-driven MMO set in the Star Wars galaxy. The game takes place 300 years after the events of the Knights of the Old Republic series, but still approximately 3,600 years before the films. The galaxy is on the brink of war, and its fruition has only been stopped temporarily by the Treaty of Coruscant. In the game, you create your own hero based on the classic Star Wars roles, including Jedi Knights, Sith Lords, Bounty Hunters, Smugglers, and more. The involvement of your hero in this struggle will gradually unfold as you play, while you simultaneously take part in your hero's personal quest line. Your decisions will determine your path down the light or dark side of the Force, and ultimately how your story will end. Whether you play with your friends or people you meet for the first time in-game, you choose how your destiny unfolds.
WHO/WHAT/WHERE CAN I PLAY?
When making a character, you have two faction choices: Empire and Republic.
Republic

Factions share planets and world quests, and each class has a unique "Class Quest", which is essentially a single player story arc for your character. However, the four classes for each faction "mirror" the other, in abilities. For example, the Sith Inquisitor is a "mirror" of the Jedi Consular, as their advanced classes and abilities are the same, just with different visuals. Class Quests are not mirrored.
Features
Star Wars: The Old Republic has a number of things in common with WoW and other MMOs, mostly for convenience, quality of life, or to help new players adjust. The biggest change SW:TOR brings to the field is story and personal character progression:
- It's the first MMO ever with fully voiced, fully animated cutscenes. Every conversation is voiced (including unimportant NPCs) and almost every conversation is a cutscene (excluding unimportant NPCs). This may seem like a gimmick at first, but it's definitely a change of pace from other MMOs. Instead of clicking through quest boxes, you're immersed in what's going on, and there's hardly ever a moment where you're completely clueless as to what's going on. Some characters you'll come to love, while others you'll detest. When it came to MMOs, none of that had ever really been a factor before. It's a huge selling point, and it makes rolling new characters much more enjoyable.
- SW:TOR has a conversation wheel, which allows you to control the progression of a conversation. Your decision might lead to a black and white outcome, but often times there's more nuance than that. Every choice is voiced by your character, unlike the silent protagonists from KOTOR. If you're in a group, each player rolls for a conversation choice. The highest roll is the one who speaks.
- Each class has a unique story, which progresses as you explore and level up. They're all designed to be completed alone, so you'll never need a group for your personal quest. Your personal quest may mingle what's happening around you (like the war) but for the most part, it's a story of its own.
- Expansion/Closure for the KOTOR story arc. If you liked the original KOTOR games, and you were hoping for KOTOR 3, you might want to play this. Almost all of the loose ends from KOTOR are tied up in SW:TOR, across both factions. Some characters return, while others live on through their ancestors. For example, Satele Shan, the current Grand Master of the Jedi Order, is a descendant of Bastila Shan from the original KOTOR.
HOW MUCH DOES THE GAME COST?
SWTOR is Free-2-Play, however with the downside of a -25% exp reduction from level 10, you can offset this by using exp boosts from either the Cartel Market, or, From the Galactic Trade Network. Alternatively you can subscribe.

Oh wait untill the final decision regarding him, you'll absolutely love it. I felt like the SW had better bosses than the SI in the story

I really don't like the hotkey click combat, how is the gameplay? Is this worth downloading? How is it since it went F2P? Are the restrictions on F2P game altering (Do i have to subscribe to be able to do end game content successfully)

I find it isn't worth sticking to F2P the whole time. use it as a trial, and if you like it, then consider springing for a month or to, or subscribe.
The gameplay is what you make of it, its hotkey based, but it does it well enough. The story is done really well, and depending on your class is engaging enough to keep you playing.

If i'm reading this correctly, the double XP to the base XP and the double to the consumable boosts would bring you up to 250% XP..
You'd be looking at a near 300% xp with all possible buffs I think
Just a few more hours until the double XP weekend starts
These double xp weekends are probably just a ploy to get people to max out their character slots so when they add the cathar race you'll have to buy that and another character slot for it
ok
Or because you know, the free-to-play players wont get shafted, will buy makeb and powerlevel.
resubbing in april to level with a friend
wow just can't hold my interest anymore. why has this subpar mmo captivated me so
Because it's good?

YAY
fuck, guys.
i logged back into my juggernaut after a month or two of inactivity, and i'm so sad at what i saw. my 300+ player guild is completely dead. no one's logged in in the last month. I grew that fucking guild with my bare hands and three friends. I knew everyone in it, and now they're all gone. without even a goodbye.
except for one guy. one guy has logged in every day since. i asked him why and he told me that someone had to. as long as he keeps playing, the guild won't die. i almost broke down right there. ;-;
i'm leaving my juggernaut there as a sign of respect, but I can't play it anymore. Too sad. I need to reroll on another server, start fresh.
i'm so sad now
Why would you need to roll on a new server? :v: they'll mostly be back for the expansion i would think
I think it's silly that subscribers have to even pay for the expansion.
The GM got locked out of his account and decided to just leave, so we're stuck with a GM that can't do anything. I'm an Officer but that doesn't help much. I already tried contacting Support, they can't remove him as GM.
Most of them left for good, I think. It sucks, I knew a ton of them really well. But I guess that's how this shit works. Can't let it affect me too much. :(
God, I can't even imagine how this would feel if it was like a 3+ year old wow guild. That'd be even worse.

I joined a guild in WoW back in 2005. Was in that same guild with loads of the same people a year ago. There were like 20 people in there I knew as well as my friends who I had known for 10 years.
We had stopped hardcore raiding about 2 years ago and last year the GM decided to call it quits with WoW in general. I myself had been thinking of doing the same and quite some other officers did aswell. Long story short; we looked for new guilds for the members who didn't want to quit. When the day came the GM was about to disband the guild for good most of us were on Ventrilo listening to his last speech.
Was quite hard to deal with and quite some men and women cried that day. Still think I know most of the speech by heart to this day.
Quite off-topic but whatever.

Just out of interest what was the general jist of the speech?
Also on-topic, is this game worth subscribing to again? Played the beta and for a little while after release but just ended up giving up. Are there a lot of players still on?

Yeah the game is pretty populated with some-odd 500+ people on the fleet during prime time and still something like 100 on at like 4am server time. At least of Pot5. Though if your a PvPer I'd suggest maybe holding off until 2.0 goes live or they announce the finalize patch notes for 2.0. Though if you play a knight/warrior your pretty much good. Commando is still shit, VG/PT is getting nerfed.

Well, he gathered the people who had been with him for a long time. About 10 of us had been with the guild since the very beginning and there were about 20-30 people who had been with the guild for years aswell. He started talking about the things we had accomplished (server first or seconds on all bosses since Molten Core up to Icecrown Citadel). He also touched on the good things that happend in the guild (2 people got married because of it and another couple got engaged) and all the bad things (some girl was diagnosed with leukemia and died ~3 years ago). Some of us (around 15) also had a couple words before the GM finished off with a good luck to us all. In the end he thanked us all. Before this point a couple people could be heard sniffing and some cried out loud. During his thank-you's we could just hear him start to break down. He kept thanking us over and over again whilest barely holding back his tears.
So what was planned to be a 10 minute goodbye speech ended up being a 4 hour talk about everything.
So, not quite a jist but whatever.

Uh customer support can in fact remove a GM if they quit. I've seen it done before.
eh. it's fine. he's rerolling with me on Shadowlands.
i forgot how much i liked tanking. this game makes it so fun. i hear stuff like "that was the easiest time i've ever had in this place" all the time, I love it.
