Played Mobil 1 Rally Championship (aka Rally Championship 2000) this past month. Haven't played a racing game in 8 years. I first played this one around 2001, but never finished it, it was too hard for me back then, maybe because I was playing on a keyboard. I've realized just how relaxing racing games can be and had a ton of fun, but also some very frustrating moments in the arcade mode(the streets are very narrow in this game and the AI are annoying sons of bitches that don't want to move !!!). I've read modern rally games don't have 30-40km long tracks anymore, so that's a shame.
Probably nobody cares, but I finally managed to auction off my Dino!

I like DIRT4 so far. I don't really care about physics and cars feeling more grippy (but RWDs are less prone to spin, Lancia 037 now seems to be really tame). What I really like is some sense of progression with these career events and especially Pro Tour, before that I had to take a part in unofficial Dirt Rally championship to even have a reason to play.
I stopped playing Dirt Rally again some months ago though, because I was frustrated at the mistakes and crashes I had. Compared to RBR, it always felt like it wasn't my fault. In DIRT4 all mistakes I do seem to be natural, unless we count the situations when co-driver notes are too late.
Random events on offline rallies are 10/10, it's been awhile since someone implemented random crashed cars staying on the road (I can only think of WRC Rally Evolved). I also had a helicopter staying too low and obstructing the view with dust.
Stage generator is cool idea, but people bitch at repeating sections which, as you might see on loading screens, consist of tiles snapped together. I only noticed a couple of particular hairpins in USA that occur really often.
Also, how many of you picked the female co-driver? I can't stand Nicky Grist, he's not engaging and his tone is weird sometimes just like I remember from the first Colin McRae Rally [sp]FAAIFFF[/sp]
AT 1PM GMT, we might try DIRT4 FP multiplayer sesion, come join at Discord channel
The OP would look a bit better if you stated which group is simulator and which group is arcade, sure we know, but it's a QoL addition for newcomers

It absolutely baffles me people are saying the tough AI is too easy. Every stage with the BMW has been like this.

It kind of is. When I dropped in on tough, I got straight 1s and 2s for most races, even if I had some minor fuck ups. Maybe it's different in other classes.
As a thread starter I have a dirt rally key from the humblemonthly if anyone wants it, don't ask if you already have it or arnt going to play it please
If you have more than one car in your garage how do you change the car you see when in the branding menu?

You unlock "brutal" AI later on.

Yo if you like AG racers like FZero or Wipeout, check out Redout. IDK if this is the right crowd, but the game is tight.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/517710/Redout_Enhanced_Edition/
Check out BallisticNG too. It's almost an exact copy of the PS1 wipeout games. Even has some optional PS1 shader effects. http://store.steampowered.com/app/473770/BallisticNG/
Oh and it's also free.

I'd love it if you've still got it.
Also, I finally unlocked Endurance races on GT4. Hopefully my B-Spec driver won't fuck them up too badly.

It's like a Hot Wheels themed hot rod. Has a huge skull for a grille.

I got the Wipeout Omega Collection for PS4 the other day, and I have to ask people here, why is Wiepout popular? Sure, the graphics are great, but so are the graphics in many racing games. The music is repetitive, the tracks feel extremely claustrophobic for such vehicles, and the actual gameplay is incredibly boring.
Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I used to play Quantum Redshift when I was a kid, and that was actually fun compared to this.
This comes as more of a question, instead of a contribution to the thread, so apologies for that.
But, recently I picked up DiRT Showdown from the humble bundle, would you say it's worth buying an actual steering wheel for gaming or just use the odd console controller I have laying around?
Showdown is an arcade racer, you're more than fine using a controller with it.

I actually never played Wipeout, and I don't really like the series, but I still think Redout is pretty cool. I played a lot of FZero when I was younger though.

TBH I'd only consider getting a wheel if I were a hobbyist and played some of the more-hardcore games like RaceRoom and Asetto Corsa. Using gamepads can still be both satisfying and effective for most racing games.

Actually, Redout looks like the best parts of Wipeout, without the worst parts. The vehicles actually seem fast, and the tracks do not feel claustrophobic. It's actually irritating me now, because it looks like so much more fun than Wipeout.
Redout is great fun, easy to get into but incredibly difficult to master.
The speed difference between someone who knows how to brake and strafe properly vs someone who doesn't is insane, even if they're both good at the game.
can you force dirt 4 into vr mode like you could with rally before they added official support?
Got a Thrustmaster T-500 a couple days ago, still have to get used to it trying to dislocate my arm when shit gets hectic in Dirt 4. Great wheel though, so much more quieter than my old T-150. Sadly it has the same shit desk mounting system as the T-150.

Be careful with the force feedback. If whatever games your playing let you see how much FFB is being applied, make sure the wheel isn't clipping. Not only does it cause to you lose information in your FFB, but it can also damage the wheel because it's trying to put out max force and you'll be fighting the wheel. This video is a bit long winded, but it explains everything there is about force feedback clipping.

Question: What do you guys think would be the best way to handle visiblity issues with a top down racer?
I want to make something semi-realistic, but the problem is I have to either zoom out to extreme distances, or keep the camera close enough to look decent, but then players can't see the apex of the upcoming turn to prepare properly.
Would racing line overlay be the best way to go, or just try to use visual cues like brake marks on the track.
Every example I've found, even games that tout themselves as realistic has had extremely tight turning, where braking was rarely necessary at all.

Centered locked camera with decent distance to see the corners. I think moving camera as you drive may disorient the player.

I don't know what to tell you, really. I find Wipeout to have fantastic feeling of speed and challenge in cornering. I'm pretty sure BallisticNG wouldn't be popular if it hadn't been so well-made to clone the driving mechanics.
