• Pokémon GO to discontinue support on Apple devices that are not capable of upgrading to iOS 11

Figured this needed a proper news thread
In an upcoming update to Pokémon GO, we will end support for Apple devices not capable of upgrading to iOS 11, such as iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c models. This change is a result of improvements to Pokémon GO that push the application beyond the capabilities of the operating systems on such devices. This change will take effect on 02/28/2018. After that date, Trainers using affected devices may no longer be able to access their Pokémon GO accounts from that device, or use their PokéCoins or other items in their Bags. They will need to switch to a supported device to continue playing Pokémon GO.
official news release
I don't remember it running particularly well on my friend's 5c but really?
That's ridiculous. The graphics aren't anywhere close to that good. Even outside of that, graceful degradation is pretty much standard for commercial products. If they can't do that, then they have some seriously mediocre programmers and/or designers on their team.

I used the AR stuff precisely once when it launched, then i turned it off because it sucks your battery down
Is Pokemon Go still a big thing, do people still play it on large?
I don't remember it running particularly well on my friend's 5c but really?
I have an iPhone 5C - oddly enough, the pseudo-cracked version I got (because the fuckers didn't launch it in India, apparently Nintendo doesn't really care about launching any of its devices in India at all  ) ran better than the official one when it finally dropped. Not to mention the app just straight up annihilated my battery. Kind of put me off playing it completely.
They already discontinued iOS 8 devices a few months ago, and nobody made a big deal about that. The game has never run well on the 2013 iOS devices that they're discontinuing here, so I don't know why people are making a big deal out of this one. It's your perogative if you want to keep using a five-year-old phone, and you always should've known that it would stop being supported by most apps at some point. But most important is the reason why they're doing this. The discontinuation of support is going to come alongside a major update in late February, which will likely carry either a huge overhaul of the game or an integral new feature. They appear to be targeting 64-bit processors, not iOS 11, despite the weird wording they chose. They don't say that upgrading to iOS 11 is required, just that the device is able to. If they're switching to a 64-bit setup or a major new feature needs the power, then it seems totally reasonable to me to discontinue support for 5-year-old phones.
[...] They appear to be targeting 64-bit processors, not iOS 11, [...]
That's weird too. What could they be doing that doesn't work on 32 bit with a simple compiler switch (aside from being utter memory hogs and doing floating point maths in far higher precision than necessary)?
People still play pokemon go? [editline]11th January 2018[/editline] woops sorry didnt notice someone basically made this same post already
Pokemon go had so much potential instead it became mobile trash
I still play it every day cuz I made a hobby out of actually trying to catch them all but it's become so fuckin difficult because Niantic is such a shit company. Just pedals microtransactions and cares so little about its playerbase. It''s so exhausting
I used the AR stuff precisely once when it launched, then i turned it off because it sucks your battery down
Made it harder to effectively aim your throw too
It looks like they're moving to 64bit related code only instead of the current x86-64 we have at the moment. Maybe the move to 64bit is because of the bad RAM management Go has, so moving to devices with more RAM will hide the numerous memory leaks.
