A pensioner has died of his injuries after bursting into flames in unexplained circumstances in a London street.
Police are appealing for information on the blaze that killed 70-year-old John Nolan, a retired construction worker originally from Ireland.
Emergency services were called to reports of a “man ablaze” near his home in Haringey on 17 September.
[...]
The London Fire Brigade investigated the cause of the fire but found no evidence of an “accelerant” that would have spread the flames.
Police have now taken charge of the investigation but have made no arrests, with Mr Nolan’s death being treated as unexplained.
The investigating officer, PC Damien Ait-Amer, said: “We have spoken with a number of witnesses who saw Mr Nolan ablaze, but we have yet to establish how the fire started.
“Mr Nolan was a well-liked member of the community and none of our enquiries so far have indicated that he had been involved in a dispute of any sort.
“Nor does any account given by witnesses suggest that he had been in contact with another person at the time of the fire.”
Whoops, wrong person
He must have told one to many lies and his pants ignited.
God was showing off
Spontaneous Combustion strikes again.
Spontaneous human combustion perhaps?
phone/cigarette lighter going off probably
Police are looking for a suspect armed with the Ignite toolgun.

feel like the fire brigade and police department would have put that forwards as an explanation far before "unexplainable" had that been the case

OR bad cellphone battery. Them note 7's are still floating about out there.
um. this happened in september. the article didn't even provide any updates.
I didn't know they were filming season 5 of Sherlock already

so they're reusing incidents that happened in the 2009 sherlock holmes movie? how uninspired
You know, several, you know, dozens of people spontaneously combust each year. It's just not really widely reported.
What a horrible and painful way to die.
I wouldn't wish anyone such death.

the update is the guy has finally succumbed to his injuries

That's my issue. Even if it were a cell phone battery...I just have a hard time believing he'd suddenly go up in flames like that without an accelerant, which wasn't found. I mean if he was wearing cotton clothing or something I could see him rapidly catching on fire, but it's still unlikely.
These types of cases are rare but not unheard of. Could he have been stuck by lightning?

I wonder if he was an alcoholic. For some reason it supposedly tends to happen to alcoholics, no idea why. (It is technically flammable. Maybe he drank alot or some was spilt on his clothing and the vapors were ignited somehow?)
I mean he was literally walking down the street when he caught fire. Something like him stepping on a downed power line would have been discovered already. (Autopsy would show signs of electrocution, utility company would have reported a downed line around the same time as the death, etc.)

Yes the article says he was Irish

But what if they right-clicked?
