German court: Ancient forest can be cleared for coal mine
A court in western Germany says an ancient forest near the Belgian border can be chopped down to make way for a coal strip mine.
Cologne's administrative court ruled Friday against a legal complaint brought by the environmental group BUND that wanted to halt the clearance of much of the Hambach forest.
The group said it would appeal the decision and seek an injunction to prevent energy company RWE from clearing the trees in the meantime.
right, forgot germany likes to hide their rediculous coal usage
This should be ridiculed and stopped asap

Iirc they suckle a lot of nuclear power out of France or something, could be wrong
Look at how green we are!
Thanks Merkel, the Greens and the overreactionary German population
Western Europe should be savoring every last bit of forest they have left. Because they pretty much have none. What makes me sad is that signs of extensive deforestation are also starting to appear in my own country, which is the most forested nation in the EU I believe.

We do, but in terms of net power we produce a little bit more than we use.
For whatever reason coal, especially brown coal, is incredibly cheap here.
That means there's unfortunately next to no economic incentive against phasing it out for renewable energy right now.

Our forest percentage over here is mostly stable and has been going up before that, but I think a lot of that are agricultural forests for wood product with mostly only one kind of tree. They aren't all that nice places.
The Hambach forest seems extremely pleasant from the photos I just found. I really hope it's preserved, but I'm not counting on the courts here.
If there's a chance, then most likely through publicity work and pressuring politicians into protecting the area.
Shouldn't have lost Silesia.
What a ridiculous and unacceptable decision.Didn't know we were stuck in the XX century.
Germany's solution to their ill thought out nuclear phaseout: burn more coal :downs:

You have cheap coal because you have huge quantities of it that's easily accessible.
But why are you getting rid of diesels if you're just gonna put out a shitload of SHIT again?

What, you think they built this thing for shits and giggles?

at least you're not pretending this will be good for the enviroment or make thousands of jobs like coal guys here are
this is the embodiment of automation killing jobs

I voted green and am consuming 100% eco power and driving a very low intake petrol, who are you talking to?

Because RWE is in bed with politicians and at this point is basically subsidies farming

That explains a bunch. I'd be surprised if accessibility and automation alone would drop the price below half of what it costs in the US (considering how much work is added by relocating small cities in the path and fixing the landscape after the excavators are done).
For context, here's a recent-ish cost overview.
this is blatant corruption
Shut down your nuclear power plants, build more coal plants, yet claim you're going green, amazing.
It's pretty well reported that they have to burn coal since solar/wind doesn't provide a consistent amount of energy during some days; So they have to keep coal factories on standby. Germany's coal emissions are slowly rising again for the last two years actually because of this issue (they did sharply decline them before though).
MIT report on this.

Problem is they are also refusing to ever use nuclear which would really help in this situation.
