[t]https://electrek.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/id_buzz_concept_7400.jpg[/t]
Volkswagen CEO Dr Herbert Diess said in Pebble Beach today:
After the presentations at the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, we received a large number of letters and emails from customers who said, ‘please build this car. The Microbus has long been part of the California lifestyle. Now we’re bringing it back by reinventing it as an electric vehicle.
The CEO says that the vehicle will be available at US dealership in 2022 and a version for cargo will also follow. ... The most high-end will feature an all-wheel drive system with a total output of 369 horsepower powered by a massive 111 kWh battery pack. Surprisingly, especially after their recent range comparisons, VW also offered the estimated range based on the U.S. driving cycle, which the company claims will be 270 miles. God damn that's ugly, they should keep the old hippiebus look for it :v:
I like the idea behind it but the front end is fuckugly [t]https://electrek.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/id_buzz_concept_7401.jpg?quality=82&strip=all[/t] Rear isn't great either but it's way better than the front atleast the interior looks absolute horrid aswell [t]https://electrek.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/id_buzz_concept_7405.jpg?quality=82&strip=all&w=1200&h=[/t]
if you're gonna go retro, please go full retro and not half-ass it with stuff like the lights
Yeah there's been some recent retro-revival designs that worked really well, such as the Fiat 500, the Mini Cooper and the Vespa LX series, but this one does not work. It'd be better off trying it's own thing, really. Hell, the only semblance of retro it has is the two-tone paintjob and the oversized VW logo doing a callback to the original, the rest is all suppository-pill-shaped and bland.
I'm all about the bus revival
I don't think it looks that bad.
It would probably look better if they used a different color scheme for the exterior.
They can't exactly keep the old shape because of the drag coefficient.
It would probably look better if they used a different color scheme for the exterior.
That was my first reaction to the images, I don't actually mind the design all that much, but the colour isn't great
They can't exactly keep the old shape because of the drag coefficient.
Overall shape isn't necessarily related to drag coefficient if the designers know what they're doing. I.e. Dodge Ram is very aerodynamic for a truck (Cd 0.36, other trucks go up to 0.6) despite looking like, well, a truck [t]https://www.cstatic-images.com/stock/900x600/259329.jpg[/t] And my favorite example of this, Eagle Premier [t]https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--RCQuXbqk--/c_scale,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/v71h8v6uqw3vvtn6x1pu.jpg[/t] Cd 0.31, about the same as Chevrolet Bolt
The original camper van had a drag coefficient of 0.51 which would be terrible for an EV, I really don't see your point here.
My point is they could keep the shape while making it aerodynamic as well.
Why do all car companies who's name doesn't start with T think step 1 of making an electric car is designing an ultra-futuristic turd? I just don't understand it. Make electric cars look like regular old cars and people might buy them.

[editline]20th August 2017[/editline] i fixed the front

It's alright for hybrids but whenever they do another redesign of the Golf they will probably consider the space for batteries along the bottom.
I like it
They can't exactly keep the old shape because of the drag coefficient.
I thought it was a safety matter, since the old buses place the driver and passenger in the immediate front of the vehicle. It's a really weird feeling being in one, because you can get a lot closer behind other cars than your instincts tell you is safe
My point is they could keep the shape while making it aerodynamic as well.
They did
They're obviously not aiming at the market that owned one of these back in the day. I'm sure hipsters will flood over this.
It looks like ass, reminds me of the BMW i3. The aggressive headlights just make it look more like a child's toy paired with the bulbous body and obnoxiously "futuristic" ornamentation. How could they botch this so badly?
God damn that's ugly, they should keep the old hippiebus look for it :v:
Absolutely agreed. This is New Beetle 2.0.
Absolutely agreed. This is New Beetle 2.0.
The design is probably subject to change in the production period.
I like it. Sufficiently reminiscent of the old hippie bus, but with a modern take. Wonder if they are going to remake the camper version of with with the raisable roof.
I think it looks nifty, like a big dumb sci-fi car.
They can't exactly keep the old shape because of the drag coefficient.
mostly crash problems, the driver had no protection whatsoever. in this, i imagine they'll take a cue from Smart and make some kind of full frontal crumple zone that meets crash standards
mostly crash problems, the driver had no protection whatsoever. in this, i imagine they'll take a cue from Smart and make some kind of full frontal crumple zone that meets crash standards
Can confirm as a fairly frequent driver of a '79 Westfalia that if I get into a front end crash I'm probably dead. [editline]20th August 2017[/editline] Maybe Nader can kill this thing too and have them redesign it into something that looks good
Jfc I know some car guys might mock Tesla for being a electric appliance but this looks closer to that than anything else. They had one job.
