An annual comic convention in Portland, Oregon, just banned Nazi cosplay. The Rose City Comic Con — which drew more than 36,000 attendees in 2016 — announced new costume guidelines Thursday. Part of the new policy says: "Hateful symbols aren't welcome. ... Historical costumes can be great, but reminders of unspeakable atrocities are not appropriate." And violators of this rule won't just be banned this year — they'll be banned for life. Organizers said they made the decision after allowing cosplayers to wear SS gear at earlier conventions. The organization tweeted: "We first thought it was offensive, but permissible. That was wrong & we won't allow it again." Nazi-linked characters include members of Marvel's Hydra, like Red Skull. Both entities gained mass attention when they used Captain America as a sleeper agent during the controversial "Secret Empire" story arc. The arc received heavy criticism, given the fact that two Jewish artists originally created the Captain America character to fight Nazis. By the end of the "Secret Empire" series, writers revealed Hydra leaders altered Captain America's past. The true superhero was hidden in a separate dimension.
http://www.nbc26.com/newsy/this-comic-book-convention-has-had-enough-with-nazi-cosplay
Just dress up as Stormfront from The Boys. Secret Nazi dress-up. This one... [t]https://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/6/67602/3281117-stormfront%273.jpg[/t] Not this one... [t]https://img.purch.com/o/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5uZXdzYXJhbWEuY29tL2ltYWdlcy9pLzAwMC8wNTkvOTI5L2kwMi9Cb3lzNDMtZmYuanBn[/t]
Part of me thinks this is a real shame, but on the other hand I can understand how being surrounded by people walking around in Nazi uniforms might make members of certain groups uncomfortable, especially in the current political climate. Ultimately I think it's fair to ask people to leave their Red Skull costume at home to make the event a more welcoming environment for non-white people and LGBT folk, but yeah, still a shame they felt the need to do this.
From the policy itself
Hateful symbols aren’t welcome at Rose City Comic Con. Historical costumes can be great, but reminders of unspeakable atrocities are not appropriate – this goes for Old School Hydra and Red Skull or any other Nazis from entertainment properties. Those figures, while comic-related, are still very much Nazis. As a result, they are 100% banned, always. This includes any sort of “ironic” or satirical costumes that re-appropriate Nazi paraphernalia or gear.
That's how they fixed that?
=This includes any sort of “ironic” or satirical costumes that re-appropriate Nazi paraphernalia or gear.
Someone needs to send this guy to Portland to test the waters. Portland was wrapped up in the skinhead movement in the eighties/ninties and it's still a sore spot. the waters have already been tested, we're good, tia

responding more to the insinuating remark than anything else
Wait, really? That's how they fixed that?
I had considered making one last thread with the story's closing but didn't see the point with the writer Nick Spencer being entirely misleading during the entire event and the event ending with the Earth being cosmically put back into line by the Cosmic Cube manifested as a girl (which he explicitly said wouldn't happen, but then saying he was technically correct because he left two characters "dead" and the entire city of Las Vegas destroyed) and one of the editors Tom Brevoort doing a post-event interview on ABC with him saying "We angered the right people", which is pretty clear with statements in the past he's talking about upsetting long time fans and is more interested in fishing for outrage sales and grabbing headlines than writing a compelling event.
responding more to the insinuating remark than anything else
pretty poor retort when were talking about a pretty iconic villain
Was this ever even a problem for comic con, or are they just going for the easy pr?
He is wearing a WW1-era German uniform.
You can tell that he's meant to be from an alternate sci-fi past because he has goggles on. Everybody wears goggles in the retro-futuristic and/or steampunk past.
I don't recall red skull featuring prominently in any of my history classes I wonder if this slippery slope will continue to helghast and eventually stormtroopers
I don't recall red skull featuring prominently in any of my history classes I wonder if this slippery slope will continue to helghast and eventually stormtroopers
Too late on that one if I remember right, it's already happened.
Too late on that one if I remember right, it's already happened.
I know I've heard of at least a couple occasions of Stormtroopers being banned because of supposed association with Nazi Germany.
I know I've heard of at least a couple occasions of Stormtroopers being banned because of supposed association with Nazi Germany.
The sad part is that it is more of a WW1 thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stormtrooper
The sad part is that it is more of a WW1 thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stormtrooper
Doesn't matter. The name is associated with WWII in some capacity so anything and everything having to do with it should be banned from view because a small minority could become uncomfortable.
banning hydra stuff is really fucking stupid
I think the way they've presented this is reactionary and silly but frankly it might as well be for their protection at this point considering how gung ho people are about beating the shit outta suspected nazis in public these days. It would be a shame if it were to cause a misunderstanding.

Wannabe vigilante chucklefucks beating people up is not a comicons issue, and really, anyone who goes after a guy in a Stormtrooper cosplay or Red Skull cosplay is a fucking idiot.
Jeez this is fucking retarded.
You should be allowed to wear Nazi cosplay but ONLY if you get beaten up and 'defeated' by Captain America at the end of the con
Makes me wonder, will this affect historical reenactments in the future? After, all 1 side represent the bad guys/opposing force/nazis
Makes me wonder, will this affect historical reenactments in the future? After, all 1 side represent the bad guys/opposing force/nazis
Do you really not see the difference between a war reenactment and a comic con
Do you really not see the difference between a war reenactment and a comic con
Of course, what I'm saying if they are going to ban something like this, is there a possibility it might affect other areas where people dress up as nazis?

Quick, someone go as Charlie Chaplin in a brown suit and then get on the news when they kick you out over misunderstanding your costume then say something about FP on national television so they look up the forums and present us as a new neo-nazi hub.
Makes me wonder, will this affect historical reenactments in the future? After, all 1 side represent the bad guys/opposing force/nazis
It wouldn't surprise me if in the near future reenactment groups sterilize themselves like video games and movies have; everyone still wears the uniforms, only the swastika is replaced with the Iron Cross or just removed.
