As a biology professor for 15 years at Olympia’s The Evergreen State College, Bret Weinstein has seen his share of protests, but he’s never been afraid of being on campus until this week.
“I have been told by the Chief of Police it’s not safe for me to be on campus,” said Weinstein, who held his Thursday class in a downtown Olympia park.

An administrator confirmed the police department advised Weinstein it “might be best to stay off campus for a day or so.”
Demonstrations involving as many as 200 students filled classrooms and the President’s office on campus on Tuesday and Wednesday. Protesters are upset over what they believe are racist policies at the college, and some called for Weinstein to resign.
Earlier this school year Weinstein raised concerns about proposed policy changes, including one that would have race play a larger role in the hiring process.

Weinstein, who is white, said opposing that idea does not make him a racist.
“When one opposes these proposals, what happens is one is stigmatized as ‘anti-equity’ and because I am light-skinned the narrative suggests I'm a person who has benefited from privilege and that I'm trying to preserve that privilege in the face of a legitimate challenge,” said Weinstein.
Nearly 20 of his students attended his Thursday class in the park.
They said they do not consider him a racist.
Over the last 72 hours, students have taken over a small liberal arts college in Washington state, and only one adult has tried to stop them.
Students at Evergreen State College in Olympia, who filmed their exploits and posted the videos on social media, have occupied and barricaded the library, shouting down anyone who disagrees with them or shows insufficient passion for racial justice.
Biology professor Bret Weinstein was berated by dozens of students outside of his classroom Tuesday morning for refusing to participate in an event in which white people were invited to leave campus for a day. Now, he says police have told him to hold his classes off campus due to safety concerns.
Things are “out of control at Evergreen,” he said.
“Police told me protesters stopped cars yesterday, demanding information about occupants,” Mr. Weinstein told The Washington Times. “They believe I was being sought. It appears that the campus has been under the effective control of protesters since 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Police are on lockdown, hamstrung by the college administration. Students, staff and faculty are not safe.”

Mr. Weinstein was confronted outside of his classroom Tuesday morning by dozens of students who demanded he apologize or resign for writing an allegedly racist email.
His email took issue with a “Day of Absence & Day of Presence” demonstration, for which white students, faculty and staff were asked to leave campus for one day.
He wrote: “On a college campus, one’s right to speak — or to be — should never be based on skin color.”
A video of the confrontation, captured by Mr. Vincent, shows Mr. Weinstein attempting to reason with dozens of students who routinely shout him down, curse at him and demand his resignation.
When the professor tells the students he will listen to them if they listen to him, one student responds, “We don’t care what terms you want to speak on. This is not about you. We are not speaking on terms — on terms of white privilege. This is not a discussion. You have lost that one.”
Another protester asks the professor whether he believes “black students in sciences are targeted.”
After asking for a clarification, Mr. Weinstein says, “I do not believe that anybody on our faculty, with intent, specially targets students of color.”
That remark prompts shrieks of outrage.
Eric Weinstein, the professor’s brother, called the exchange ironic due to his brother’s “center-left” political views and staunch anti-racism.
“If you had asked me who is one of racism’s most powerful foes, I would have said Bret Weinstein,” Eric Weinstein told The Times. “There’s something sort of ‘Twilight Zone’ about one of the most thoughtful commentators on race, at one of the most progressive schools in the country, getting called a racist.”

Mr. Bridges promised, per the demands, to institute a new student conduct code, to improve the quality of faculty evaluations and to enact an annual sensitivity training for all faculty, staff and police that emphasizes the eradication of anti-black racism.
Securing these programs was the original purpose of the protests, Mr. Vincent said. As for the confrontation with Mr. Weinstein: “We were trying to make an example out of him.”
Despite the fulfillment of the demands, Mr. Vincent said there’s no timetable for ending the demonstrations.
“In fact,” he said, “there have been and will be more walk-ins into different faculty’s classrooms.”

If they have "taken over the facilities" and employees and students are "not safe there any longer" due to this, then they are by no means protesters in any sense of the word.
good on him for standing his ground. he seems like a level headed and intelligent man.
This is utterly disgusting. Students attacking people for not having the same worldview as them is completely disgusting and bigoted. Fuck them.
People will say again and again that "SJWs" don't exist outside of the internet, but occurrences like this are becoming ever more common, and just as idiotic as the people they're fighting against.
This is actually terrifying. Imagine being a white student and not being able to leave your dorm room for days. This is has gone too fucking far.
Fucking segregators. Eat shit and read a history book.
I'm sorry for the language.
Seems to be a repeated theme now that professors are standing up to bullshit.
Let's see if this guy becomes the next Jordan Peterson.

Fuck, I don't fucking think any-fucking-body fucking cares. Say whatever the fuck you want, we're all fucking mature enough.
Fuck.

They arent attacking this prof for having different worldview, they are attacking this professor for being white and refusing to segregate himself. They do plenty of attacking people for their worldview, but in this instant they might as well don pointy hats and start burning crosses.
Hahaha, I first read the title as "Students debate professor". What am I fuckin nuts?
At this point, you need riot police or, worst comes to it, the Guard.

Mobilizing the national guard for one little college is severe overkill and a waste. The students are threatening, but not armed. Riot police would be the most appropriate response, with at best SWAT on standby.

I don't think you understand
History is like Math, Science, Philosophy, and milk.
It's pure western white supremacy.

Oh hey this is my school
I've been ignoring all of this by working and studying and such
Ain't got time for all that

Except this is directly affecting all that.
it was really in the last few years that identity politics became this inflamed, right? I dont recall these types of things happening in years past

I think it's gone up, as well as people wanting to grab every event and put it on the internet making it more popular. The classic "is the world getting more violent or does the news just report violence" conundrum.

Should go ask the professor how he is doing.. Might make his day.

I dont want to start a discussion about the topic itself (because it will devolve into 30 pages of bickering), but I really noticed it picking up at around the time of gamergate
I hate to say this, but what are these SJWs going to do when/if they get out of college? Start Civil War 2?
how daft do you have to be to segregate as a solution to racism
In this day and age, Daft enough to be labeled an SJW.

Call it grandpa's senile rant on millennials but be damned if an uncomfortably large group of them are too stupid to know where the limit is.

Cry that all that they can find are low wage jobs, complain about the 1% again and totally dodge the fact they graduated on some of the shittiest degrees you can get to qualify as a graduate. (ye ol' Bachelor of Arts degree)
That or develop untreated drug, alcohol and mental problems.

if you asked me this a year or so ago, I would have told you that people so extreme will probably remain on the fringes of society.
but considering what I saw in the last 12 months, with who is in office today, I am too scared to think about it
Speak of the devil;
Yale University awarded two members of its 2017 graduating class — Alexandra Zina Barlowe and Abdul-Razak Zachariah — its annual Nakanishi Prize for showing “exemplary leadership in enhancing race and/or ethnic relations.” However, the pair played a role in an infamous 2015 controversy that led to two professors ending or diminishing their roles at the Ivy League school.
The two professors — Erika and Nicholas Christakis — were hounded by student protesters after the former sent an e-mail responding to a call from a university official for students to not dress in “culturally insensitive” Halloween costumes. Erika Christakis bluntly wondered, “Whose business is it to control the forms of costumes of young people?”
This apparently was too much for many student activists at Yale, who called for her resignation. Her husband took a public stand to defend her, but the same undergraduates shouted him down and berated him, as detailed in a Friday item from the conservative Heat Street website.
...
The professor ultimately left the Ivy League institution at the end of 2015. A year later, she wrote an op-ed piece for The Washington Post, where she spotlighted the “dizzying irrationality of some supposedly liberal discourse in academia these days.” Her husband is still a professor at the university, but resigned from his leadership role at Silliman College.

I wonder if the Evergreen protesters are just trying to outdo their Yale counterparts.
This reeks of Red Guard
All students involved should be kicked out of university. None of these utter morons are going to learn if they keep getting away with this shit and just encourages others to do the same.
Can't these students get expelled or something? IMO putting staff in danger and threatening professors is not an acceptable behaviour in any place of the world, or is the college funded by such students?
Also isn't the college private grounds therefore they can be kicked out?
