AMD today released Radeon Software Crimson ReLive 17.4.4, its fourth release for April. These drivers come with optimization for "Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III," with up to 7 percent performance improvement seen on a machine powered by a Radeon RX 580. It also fixes display corruption seen on some machines with HDMI scaling, incorrect HDR colors on "Mass Effect: Andromeda," DirectX 11 mode stuttering on CrossFire machines in "Battlefield 1," a hang noted on Radeon RX 550 machines that haven't been rebooted for a long time, and some UI improvements with Radeon Settings. The drivers also add a curious looking shortcut to your desktop
Edit: In case you are wondering where that Quake Champions Beta shortcut on your desktop comes from, AMD's 17.4.4 driver installation stealth-adds that to your desktop, with a bit.ly tracking link, instead of directly to the official page. Looks like AMD is making some $$ from it, a referral id is included in the final URL destination, too.
That's pretty awful. Considering that goodwill is probably AMD's greatest resource, this is a really dumb move.
wtf AMD are you fucking drunk right now? like pls, Nvidia was the king of shitty commercialization and promoting their own tech (without supporting it very well imo), but this is not going to help AMDs case in the slightest and may be sensationalist enough to dethrone Nvidia.
Oh no how dare a company try and make a bit of cash.
It's for a free game
Crimson's had adverts in it for paid games for quite some time.

Why does this sound more like something a programmer threw in last second instead of a corporate thing, I mean a bit.ly link? Seriously?
Either way I don't exactly see it being that bad, its a shortcut, its not like its installing the game.
Believe nVidia has some something similar in the past to this.
NVIDiA has been running ads in their driver updates for a while now, im sure AMD has been as well.
First time I seen anything outside of any driver update though. its not a move I appreciate and I hope AMD removes this, and never tries it again
why is this bad???
Oh no how dare a company try and make a bit of cash.
I thought AMD was a hardware company, not an advertising company.
Oh no how dare a company try and make a bit of cash.
Why are people always trying to excuse the shitty things companies do with this bullshit
Like okay fine, they exist to make money. Well done, you have figured out the principle goal of all business, but making money and not being shitty have zero reason to be mutually exclusive
We're already drowning in advertising basically everywhere. It's virtually impossible to go anywhere on or offline without somebody trying to advertise at you
How about the reverse
'Oh no how dare people object to having ads shoved in their face on their own personal computer'
I'd say this is the digital equivalent of a door to door salesman but it's actually about six times more invasive 'cause you can at least choose not to answer the door, and the door doesn't come with a salesman
Apparently a web shortcut placed on your desktop is now considered an ad. I was thinking like Windows notifications ads, not something that is fixed in a mere second.
why is this bad???
I like keeping my desktop clean and rather not have ads pop on it.
I dont want AMD crucified over this or anything, but they need to know that this is not OK and that we wont take it.
If people do nothing about it and do nothing about it, im sure other companies will take note and start doing the same
I don't see anything wrong with running ads while the installer is doing it's thing.
You can choose to minimize it if it's so intrusive.
The quake icon is a bit link. Not a whole game. just move to trash and move on with life.
I thought AMD was a hardware company, not an advertising company.
I'm not implying that AMD are the latter, I'm just saying that it's okay for companies to do multiple things.

It's literally just a desktop icon that you can delete in one second
This is the equivalent of looking through the peep hole and then not answering the salesman.
It's a non-issue.
I like AMD, but they should keep their ads in their shitty program and not modify my desktop in ways unrelated to it's purpose.

it's still a pain in the ass because its not immediately apparent that it's just a link.

How about just not add the link to my desktop in the first place???
Just because it ban be fixed within 2 seconds doesn't mean I should be okay with the pointless inconvinience.

What else should we call it? It's an ad.

If I have a "no soliciting" sign on my door am I not within my rights to get pissed that some asshole is soliciting me?
Here's an archive from 1998 with someone talking about the same issue. AMD should not be doing this.

At least they don't stealth things into your desktop
I wish people would fuck right off with "Well the only other supplier available does that too so it's okay!"
I guess my only remaining option is to just stick to playing with my genitals, then?

It's not them trying to make money that people are angry about, it's the underhanded tactics they're using to make it.

This is the exact same issue that made Microsoft some negative publicity a while back https://forums.xbox.com/ko-KR/thread/57932200-A01C-4EAC-980C-73A7B48E1A59

as small as the situation is, a program shouldn't be silently modifying the desktop environment / folder without permission (unless UAC is basically that permission these days) which is why installers ask if you want to put a desktop icon in your desktop folder. I mean, sure, you can easily remove the icon and say "haha, what the hell", but it's a quite sleazy thing to do.
It's not the same as the program it's self displaying ads on it's own interface, that program isn't your desktop environment, it already has space for it's own ads. And frankly, I do believe actions like these can slip into worse ideas.

Plenty of adware back in the wild-west days of this garbage did that, it wasn't cool back then, it isn't cool now.
This isn't enough to put them lower than NVIDIA on my books, but certainly lost quite a few points in with me. Not cool in the slightest.
this would immediately give me the knee-jerk reaction of "Oh fuck I have a virus"
Man, I just updated my AMD drivers today. I haven't noticed any ads though
The tiny amount of revenue this earns them is nothing compared to how soiled their name becomes doing shit like this. what the fuck are they thinking
why is this bad???
If this was Nvidia doing this you guys would be shitting all over them.

It kind of reminds me of when MMOs start failing or losing subscribers and the go too answer to recover lost income is to creep micro-transactions in, which in turn drives away more people.
Not that I am saying AMD is about to go under, but after the whole Ryzen situation went over it just seems like one stumble after another.
Well that sure killed any desire I had to consider AMD in future, this is the kind of thing I expect from shitty software companies not a major hardware producer, yeah nvidia might have ads in the installer but at least it fucks off when it's done.
