Kodansha and Production I.G announced on Friday that a new anime based on Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell manga has been green-lit. Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) are co-directing the anime. The format and release date have not yet been announced.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2017-04-06/ghost-in-the-shell-gets-new-anime-from-kenji-kamiyama-shinji-aramaki/.114481
I hope it's good as SAC
Besides fans being divided on Arise, now's as good a time as any to strike out and show people just why Ghost in the Shell is good again.
aw fuck yessssssss
The movie hasn't bombed though. Sure, it was panned by critics, but all the financiers care about is it selling tickets which it has. It should have been longer but I found the stories to be original and interesting.
kewl
Neat. However i hope it's good.

The show already established an awesome set of backstories for the team and Arise shit all over it
I'm super hyped if the SAC folks are leading the charge. Personally, I'd like to see a post-innocence story.

Id only say that if the new show not only went its own direction, but was also poorly written. Hell, it could be shit even if it adhered to every story told previously but was still poorly written. But then again I didnt watch it so I cant speak to it's quality.
The movie hasn't bombed though.
On the first week: Box Office - $73.7m US - $23m Worldwide - $50.6m against a Budget of $110m With a loss of $60m i'd believe this bombed for them, pretty much.
I hope it's good as SAC
I need more scenes like this in my life.

This is one of the best news I've read in a long time. I'm having great hopes for this, I think it's gonna be great. I already forgot about the pain of the live action movie, this announcement saved the day!

If they had just gone a little bit further from the story and changed the title, they probably would've done very well, pulling in GitS fans due to its obvious inspirations as well as the general sci-fi audience.
I remember Kenji Kamiyama being asked about doing a new GITS or SAC 3 on twitter and him saying to look forward to something soon, so its cool to see it wasnt actually a translation error and he really was working on a new one.
The stories being original is why a lot of fans didnt like them. Hell her story wasn't even told from Motoko explaining it but some old woman in a shop.

The new backstories Arise made sucked; they didnt have nearly the impact that the original stories had.

SAC is easy to fall back upon because that's what everyone's used to, and it got 2 seasons to expand upon the characters and back stories. So sure, if you find yourself in SAC you're going to think Arise sucked, but Arise was supposed to be different.
Shinji Aramaki
I hope you guys like 3DCG
I hope you guys like 3DCG
the original GITS:SAC had 3dcg too and it looked great plus shinji's got quite a few good works under his belt, it's not as bad as knights of sidonia
I hope Mary Elizabeth McGlynn voices the Major again in the english dub
Yeah I wish they would just build off SAC and keep going with that timeline, its basically a setting where they can have multiple plots and arcs and tell whatever story they want. As for the movie it wasn't exactly a generic Hollywood action revenge flick like I expected it to be (retro 80-90's art direction was pretty cool), but the writing and acting still made it fairly boring.
I think their demise was ultimately their dependence on the GitS label.
I think it was knowledge that the GitS label is pretty 'niche' for Hollywood standards (I feel like that's the case for most anime adaptions in America), given that they pushed for a Scarlett Johansson role in the movie. They very much managed to lose a good amount of the GitS audience during the whole Scarlett Johansson casting situation, at that point the only people I imagined that'd buy a ticket are the few GitS fans interested in a live action GitS movie no matter what and Scarlett Johansson fans. The whole film and it's development process really just felt like strong attempts to make an anime adaption accessible to an American cinema audience but yet again like a number of other adaptions here, it just ended up slipping on multiple banana peels.

Them rebooting it and doing it differently is fine and great as GitS is a pretty dynamic series and a lot can be done with it, but Arise just wasnt good.
Reminds me of when DB:Evolution bombed and we got Battle of Gods five years later.
I hope Mary Elizabeth McGlynn voices the Major again in the english dub
shes probably my favorite female VA, her singing on the Silent Hill OSTs is amazing

When. The first lines of the movie shove "memory" and "ghost" (without stating what that is, which can be confusing to non-fans) it definitely felt forced, and that forced part is what ruined the first half of the movie for me.
I hope Mary Elizabeth McGlynn voices the Major again in the english dub
I hope everyone from SAC comes back. At least Richard Epcar as Batou and William Knight as Aramaki alongside McGlynn.
