The upcoming 20th Pokémon movie, I Choose You, is a reimagining of the anime’s first season — but don’t expect everything to be the same. Among the biggest changes are new takes on classic moments and, for whatever reason, the replacement of Ash Ketchum’s best friends, Brock and Misty.
Brock and Misty left their posts as gym leaders early on in the anime to accompany Ash on his journey to becoming a Pokémon master. (He’s a charmer, that kid.) I Choose You forfeits these characters in favor of two new fellow trainers. There’s Souji, whose partner is a Lucario — a fourth-gen Pokémon, and thus another retcon — and Makoto, who buddies up with a Piplup.
WHY? That was the good one…
lucario is a worn out whore and needs to go away
Way too many people getting riled up over this movie for nothing. It's just a non canon "what if" re-imagining of the first season with a few twists and some of the newer Pokemon thrown in.
Yeah sure it kinda sucks that Brock and Misty aren't returning, but I don't feel the movie deserves to be bashed so hard because of it. I think it's a neat concept and I'm rather looking forward to it actually.
Why give Makoto a Piplup if Dawn is already known for her Piplup? When I saw it before the new trainers were introduced, I thought they were shoving Dawn back in.
Also it's good to see Haku is getting work

To be fair, that was kind of baffling in the show, even when I was a kid.
He beats these two gym leaders and they just randomly decide to abandon their gyms and go with him? Bwuh?

No, man, you don't get it
The first season is the childhood of literally everyone in the 90s. The Ash/Brock/Misty trio might as well be family for some people. They are just that iconic
You can't switch them for no good reason. You can't replace them, period. You see all the pretty visuals, all the most memorable scenes done bigger and better, but they don't feel the same. It's all looks and no soul

It's been a while, but I do remember that Brock's father was the original gym leader, and that Brock was simply in charge because they didn't know where he was. And Misty has her older sisters, and wanted to prove her own skill outside of the gym
I'll just think of it as an Alternate Universe
Why does it need a re-imagining though? Alternate universe for the sake of an alternate universe is just stupid.
I think it's pretty interesting and could be fun to watch. But it'd definitely be much cooler if they just retold Ash's story and kept it mostly canon. Seeing Brock and Misty back in this style would've been neat.
Retcon the whole thing at this point and get a main character that doesn't lose every time.
Almost did it when they made that red/blue mini series.
The movies have never been canon to the show. Shame it took a while for websites to catch up, we knew this back in April.

The first few could easily be slotted in between episodes. They just started to jump the shark in recent decades.

Switching out Brock and Misty isn't anywhere near as dumb as shoehorning in newer and more merchandisable Pokemon into the original 151, IMO.

Problem here is this isn't meant to cater to older fans. I've met many kids who don't even know the original 151 outside of Pikachu and Charizard, maybe.
There's an opposite problem with Pokemon GO being popular where kids who are just getting into Pokemon think there's only ~243 of them, but the Pokemon company doesn't care about GO.
It's probably an alternate universe situation. The games have started getting into that idea of multiple universes a lot recently. I haven't seen the show in years but I wouldn't be surprised if they did something similar.
What in the fuck.
They have been annual movies since the first one in 1998.

The only time the films had a running canon was in the fourth generation movies (Darkrai's, Shaymin's and Arceus'), the rest are all non-canon from the next and just have the main characters be the same.
Not to mention [sp]all the companions from Kanto to Kalos are in a montage at the end of this film[/sp]
The series ended with XYZ. Sun and Moon anime is somewhat funny but 90% filler garbage with a terrible art style to go with it.
It's like the directors of the show were sick of it being decent
Losing Misty and Brock actually don't bother me as much as shoehorning Lucario in. Because they at least could have actually kept things gen one.
[sp]I can't believe that satoshi fucking dies[/sp]

I'm not sure I agree. Sun and Moon's artstyle makes a lot of the pokemon incredibly expressive, far more then they ever were in the old style, leading to lots of great moments.
Who cares much though. generally any Pokemon movie might tear apart the fanbase. ranging either from deceptively portraying the Genesect Mewtwo as if it was the Original Mewtwo* or that the Hoopa Movie's main source of conflict of various legends fighting never really did much. that and supposedly they excised most of the credits+the stinger from the France Japan Expo airing. people tends to go crazy for stingers, since that's how we found out about Zygarde Core (Red) and Trevenant from Japanese movie viewings.
MOVIE SPOILERS: [sp]Marshadow is supposedly purifying the Rainbow Wing. but Cross stealing it off of Ash corrupted it, which in turn caused Marshadow to go out of control, causing it to possess lots of wild Pokemon. Ash takes a hit, mirroring the Spearow scene and outright disintegrates. but Ash somehow comes back to life after finding Pikachu speaking human language in what appears to be a Pokemonless world, think Pikachu let off a 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt...but they never even had a Z-crystal, which would've been interesting if they actually created one in a seemingly Megaless continuity, he also used it in the Manga adaption. apparently they never stated if Bonji was a time-displaced Red as a Faller. his appearance to Red seems coincidental[/sp].
MOVIE/GAME SPOILERS+theory [sp]I wonder if Ho-Oh is able to alter states of energy, so that it's similar to wormhole energy. or if the various renditions of a universe can theoretically be straddled? alternately the material that composes of a Rainbow Wing is much more receptive to emotional energy of people, similar to Mega Stones, the Inital Meteorite that Rayquaza came on that the Dragonid prayed to, and indirectly the Meteorite Shard in ORAS which enabled it to Mega Evolve again. one thing to also consider is that Rayquaza's organ supposedly functions similarly to a Mega Stone when infused with a sizable amount of energy, from Meteorites....which somehow rarely has the composition of what eventually turns into a Deoxys. the Deoxys in both FRLG/E and ORAS both fly in a AZOTH pattern. either as a nod to AZ's weapon or it's a bio-chemical identifyer?[/sp] also considering that Pokemon Duel shown off some sort of purple crystal and isn't talking about it until the 18th, that could be some world premiere news for Marshadow itself? i mean afterall, when Corocoro had their large issue with (Red core) Zygarde, Zygarde Cells, Zydog, Zygarde Complete and Ash!Greninja, the official site reported about it. (isn't it weird that the design of Complete has Red/Blue w/White as a neutral color...when Blue Core/Z2 was revealed in the anime later on. or that the Zygarde in Sun/Moon is made from FIVE cores?, hello alternate universe!)
* Seriously, in one Japanese trailer, Mewtwo blocks an attack and Ash outright mentions Mewtwo's name. but within the context of the movie itself, Ash never called it by name, at least not during that period in time. usually Pokemon movies would give off fake footage like Zygarde Complete appearing in the Magearna movie, or that fake-future trailer for the 1st movie. But Ash had precedence to actually state Mewtwo's name, since he was one of the few people who didn't get mindwiped after meeting him the 2nd time during an anime special. traditionally the movies are non-canon, except for the ones that run off a theme like the Time-space trio (and Shaymin) and Arceus. but one time in the Anime, Ash actually used the aura powers from the Lucario movie. granted, said episode was shilling the Ranger spinoff at the time. but thenagain, within the movies themselves, sometimes you see previous protagonists/antagonists in a "where are they now" sorta thing in the credits of later movies. for an anime that has a loose sense of negative continuity, it's weird for them to reference past movie-only characters like that.
EDIT: Can i have a minute and say that the movies breaks the rules on thei game's own mechanics? Mewtwo Mega Evolves in the Genesect movie without any Mega Stones...though this was the BW generation and Megas wasn't formally revealed. but Diancie was able to create a Diancite, again, there was no key stone involved and just used it an an emotional deus ex machina. but Pikachu using a Z-move without a Z-crystal? just what are they smoking? they already heavily promoted unique super moves for specific Pokemon if you have their Z-crystals, also the fact that preordering tickets for the movie itself in Japan gives a Hat Pikachu with Pikashunium-Z.
They're taking out Misty? They're retconning my childhood crush?
Shame on you, The Pokemon Company. Shame on you.
I like Lucario and think people who get irrationally angry at it are kinda dumb but man, this is the first time I kinda agree that it needs to get the boot.
This is really fucking dumb. Like I don't watch the shows or the movies so it's not like they lost a customer or anything but it just makes me shake my head
People are complaining about retconning in a non-canon movie in a series rebooted multiple times with almost two dozen non-canon films involving a character that somehow can travel for years on end and end up younger than when they started, based off of a game series that has multiple continuities literally determined by if a deathlaser was fired in the past or not.

did this have a point
did this have a point
While it's silly and unnecessary for them to shoehorn Lucario into this, people are looking too much into how they went with new travelling partners for a one-off stint that emphasizes that it's in a different timeline so much that they went out of their way to give him a new cap in this.
Both the original and the new design options are available as [sp]promos involving Ash's Pikachu in the Gen 7 games[/sp], so they clearly intend for them to be interpreted separately.
Honestly what bothers me the most is that Pokemon execs never had the balls to actually move things forward and we just ended up doing dumb shit like this.
Why didn't they replace Ash too then?
