Body Blitz Spa in Toronto denies transgender woman service due to 'male genitalia' policy
A popular women’s-only downtown spa is in hot water after a transgender customer claims she was denied service due to its policy prohibiting “male genitalia” after her spouse tried to make her a surprise booking last week.
“My wife tried to book me a surprise appointment at Body Blitz Spa but they won’t allow ‘male genitalia’ at the spa and told us not to come,” Jia Qing Wilson-Yang wrote on Twitter, Friday.
Wilson-Yang is a Toronto-based author known for her transgender narrative novel “Small Beauty,” which was awarded the Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ emerging writers last year.
CTV News Toronto tried to contact Jia Qing Wilson-Yang for comment Monday without success.
Her post incited a barrage of feedback on Body Blitz Spa’s social media accounts, many saying they plan to boycott the business due to its “transphobic policy”.
Thats totally reasonable, I dont see any problem with that.

God forbid someone decides to keep a part of their body.

Really? I'm not sure how different this is to the issue of transgender people using the toilet of their choice. Gender/sex-segregated facilities are silly anyway, except in cases where health and safety is threatened (e.g. shelters, clinics, women's-only public spaces in societies where harassment from men is widespread).

Yeah, fuck her for being born that way.

I'm not too keen into these kinds of subjects (due to how sensitive they are) but in the article it states that the spa is a "bathing suit optional environment" and they want to "ensure all clients are comfortable in an environment with nudity, including minors".
I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to keep a comfortable environment for their clients.
god forbid people are uncomfortable with something they're not used to.
It sucks for her of course but I understand why they didn't allow her.

Are they allowed to cater only to white people so that their clientele don't get creeped out by the presence of black people? Are they allowed to exclude old people so that younger spa-goers don't get grossed out by saggy old women's boobs? Are they allowed to bar entry to obese women because some people might find that disgusting?

there's a qualitative difference between an ugly person and somebody with a penis going into a place which is meant to be women-only

You know, it's nonsensical comments like these that remind me why I stay away from commenting on sensitive subjects. Really hard to try and make a statement or opinion, when people like you lash out with jargon.
I mean, what if people don't want to see a penis? Who they identify as should not matter in this case I think.
its great to not feel like a person when you're trans
this is seriously fucking horrible and gives me anxiety from just reading
like i deserve being prevented from doing things normal women do because im stuck waiting ages for srs yeah fun
This has nothing do to with transgenders lmao they have a no dick policy and she had a dick, that's it
unfortunate situation but it's not the spa's fault, they have a policy in place and they're not going to break it just because you are a woman, if you still have a penis despite that, they won't let you in
This has nothing do to with transgenders lmao they have a no dick policy and she had a dick, that's it

That's like saying oh we serve african americans, but not the dark skinned ones.
That's like saying oh we serve african americans, but not the dark skinned ones.
it's not, it seems like you can't even face the issue at hand without going away from the actual subject to find arguments against this
This has nothing do to with transgenders lmao they have a no dick policy and she had a dick, that's it
you know women go to these places
some women seem to have dicks
these women cant go because they have dicks
so uhh it kind of is discriminatory against trans people who havent yet had or will not undergo srs
there's a qualitative difference between an ugly person and somebody with a penis going into a place which is meant to be women-only
First, the spa's policy appears to be 'no penises allowed', not 'women-only'. Secondly, the reason why sex segregation exists is because of Western societal notions of privacy and modesty. Plenty of societies practice mixed-sex nudity without any issue whatsoever. If you accept that transgender people exist and should be treated as equals, then there is no logical difference between being grossed out by a woman with a dick, and being grossed out by a women with fat rolls.
It's the best decision for the spa, they are a women only and no penis allowed spa, if you are a woman but have a penis, you won't go in, big whoop, go somewhere else just like any other person with a dick, don't make it some sort of bullshit transphobic situation which isn't at all, that's all I have to say.
It's the best decision for the spa, they are a women only and no penis allowed spa, if you are a woman but have a penis, you won't go in
but why? seriously
i mean gee this totally wouldnt traumatize me anymore after living a lie for 18 years and you have a really good cis friend and you're just 2 girls together and you wanna have fun at this spa but then they just tell you "fuck off you got a dick lol". like that totally wouldnt make my already depressed to hell ass go into suicide mode
like WHY would someones genitalia matter?
how do you feel about trans women in women's prisons? just wondering

and this is a spa which exists in a western society practicing western societal notions
Hot take: for the same reason you shouldn't be allowed to only offer services to certain races, businesses should not be allowed to discriminate based on sex.

What you're saying is equivalent to saying "this spa is only for cis-women, trans-women are not allowed in and should go somewhere else". Don't you see how this could be just a little discriminatory?
somebody with a penis going into a place which is meant to be women-only
are you saying that you think if you have a dick you can absolutely simply not be a woman and that trans women are just men?
because it comes off like that
and this is a spa which exists in a western society practicing western societal notions
Then those notions discriminate against transgendered people and should be knocked down.
Some women are uncomfortable around exposed male genitalia.
Seeing as the spa is supposed to keep the clients comfortable, then I can see why they would prohibit it.
Some women are uncomfortable around exposed male genitalia.

yeah well im sure a lot of women who have dicks are uncomfortable with them too
thats kinda why they want srs
It's women's with a vagina exclusive policy spa, that's actually pretty specific, it's not about transgenders, it's unfair to call it discriminatory when it's the responsibility of the husband and wife to learn about the business' policies and not wondering whether or not she would be rejected for having a penis.
Their clients visit the spa knowing the place will be dick-free and as a business with established rules, it is entirely reasonable for them to reject the entry of someone with a penis, even if that person does identify as a women.
yeah well im sure a lot of women who have dicks are uncomfortable with them too

And? What point is this?
It's okay for everyone else to be uncomfortable if you're uncomfortable?
Some women are uncomfortable around exposed male genitalia.

Some women are uncomfortable with seeing fat, ugly women too. Conversely, some are uncomfortable with seeing thin, fit women. How do we accommodate those groups?
Then those notions discriminate against transgendered people and should be knocked down.
so should it be illegal for this spa (which markets itself as catering to women) to exclude people if they have a penis
It's women's with a vagina exclusive policy spa, that's actually pretty specific, it's not about transgenders, it's unfair to call it discriminatory when it's the responsibility of the husband and wife to learn about the business' policies and not wondering whether or not she would be rejected for having a penis.

It is not reasonable for them to deny entry to pre-SRS transwomen because that is discriminatory. If a business has "established rules" that exclude a certain minority then those rules have to go.
