• Writers Guild of America Reach Deal With Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers
It went beyond the deadline but the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers came to terms on a new contract early Tuesday, defusing the threat of a strike crippling the film and television industry. The sides shook hands 90 minutes after the previous contract expiration deadline passed. The WGA had vowed to strike Tuesday if a deal was not in place. The guild's instant "pencils down" policy had meant that shows that work on a quick-turnaround — notably day-time soap operas and late-night talk programs like "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" — would be out of topical material immediately. If ratified by its members, the tentative deal will cover its television and film writers for three years. It addresses health care issues, parental leave and overtime payment among other sticking points.
NBC News
No cancelled shows and fucked up scripts this time?
Glad to hear that they were successful. Writers get the extremely short end of the stick and seem to be taken for granted and overlooked right up until they go on strike.
Glad they got this sorted out in time, there were concerned among Westworld fans about them not being able to finish the script due to the strike before filming begins.
I'm glad they figured something out. The last thing we need is this falling through and ruining the TV return of Star Trek.
Apparently Season 1 (or was it 2) of TNG happened during a writers strike.
Probably season 1 since such treasures as "the black people planet" with Code of Honor were allowed. If I remember correctly, that episode was officially taken out of the canon.
No cancelled shows and fucked up scripts this time?
Hopefully it still needs to be ratified, but I am hopeful this time it won't happen. Still I am glad the writers managed to bargain a deal so quickly I thought it was going to be another futile strike incoming. But alas seems it was solved quickly.
no dr. horrible sing along 2 but no killed shows either so meh?
If I remember correctly, that episode was officially taken out of the canon.
Nothing has ever been removed from Canon except via retcons. Fans would like some things to be removed, but nothing has. Hell, Gene Roddenberry once said one of the TOS movies wasn't canon but it is still canon. Don't recall which movie, I think it may have been 6. Also the same writer of Code of Honor went on to write a Stargate SG-1 episode, but except instead of using Black people, they were Mongolians. [editline]2nd May 2017[/editline] Correction, the Animated Series was removed from Canon at one point, but it was brought back in the early 2000s. But that is the only thing that has ever been 'officially' removed.
No cancelled shows and fucked up scripts this time?
Nope. Three year reprieve; they will be back to the table though, since not everything got solved amicably.
This is a pretty bad thing for indie filmmakers though, some studios actually started looking at independent film writers during the last strike.
