Inside what look like oversized ziplock bags strewn with tubes of blood and fluid, eight fetal lambs continued to develop — much like they would have inside their mothers. Over four weeks, their lungs and brains grew, they sprouted wool, opened their eyes, wriggled around, and learned to swallow, according to a new study that takes the first step toward an artificial womb. One day, this device could help to bring premature human babies to term outside the uterus — but right now, it has only been tested on sheep.
It’s appealing to imagine a world where artificial wombs grow babies, eliminating the health risk of pregnancy. But it’s important not to get ahead of the data, says Alan Flake, fetal surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and lead author of today’s study. “It’s complete science fiction to think that you can take an embryo and get it through the early developmental process and put it on our machine without the mother being the critical element there,” he says.
Instead, the point of developing an external womb — which his team calls the Biobag — is to give infants born months too early a more natural, uterus-like environment to continue developing in, Flake says.
Human babies when? This can go a long way for those born very pre-maturely.
Looks rather morbid, but this development could potentially be a big help for babies that suffer from premature birth.
Excited to see where this may go.

That is the end goal of the project, according to the article they're expecting to trial it on human infants in about 3 years.
Also here's a couple videos that were also released that further elaborates on the research.

There are fields - endless fields - where human beings are no longer born, we are grown. For the longest time I wouldn't believe it, and then I saw the fields with my own eyes.
New human black market when?
Does this mean we will soon be technically able to grow a human without needing other humans? (aside from the 'seed and egg')

You need some blood too.

This is primarily meant for premature babies, not growth from conception. It could lead to that further in the future, but not yet.
If IVF babies are called test tube babies, what the hell do we call these?
If IVF babies are called test tube babies, what the hell do we call these?
Grocery bag babies.
A future where we can have robot wives with proper human reproduction systems. The patriarchy is looking bright boys.

Ziploc Babies.

Remind me as to why this is not getting enough funding already?

Instant Babies: Just Add Continuous Fluid Exchange

More signs of biotechnological revolution in risen.

I always imagined that an artificial uterus would be a big tube of glass, like we saw on all those sci-fi stories. But here we are, growing lambs in plastic bags.
While it's still not full-term gestation like we can do with chicken eggs (that's actually a real thing if you remember), the next iteration on the technology could potentially let us pull that off. If you don't believe the egg thing, feast your eyes on THIS. (music might be a little annoying tho)

Porta Potty Babies
This is looking FAR too much like "The Island" for my liking.
However sci-fi fears aside this is actually pretty neat.

Imagine being the child of a 3d anime waifu robot. :disgust:

Now you say it like that, it does make me think of a vast bank of bag-grown lambs in a warehouse somewhere, waiting to "ripen" and be sold to customers around the world.
Weird as it sounds, give it a decade. We might just see such a business crop up somewhere in the world.
I hope technophobia doesn't stop this from happening.
Shake-n-bake babies

Yea but I rather call Bioluddism or Biotechnophobia for sound make sense.
