The 80s took a horrible toll on the native ninja populations. Sad to see such an elegant species going extinct due to over-hunting. I thought we were past that!

To me the obvious answer are robot ninjas.
Automatons modelled after assassins, armed with bladed weaponry and built for agility and acrobatics.

There actually are a ton of ninjas. They're just so skilled at not being seen that people [i]think[/i] there is a shortage.
I wonder if there is some ancient order of assassins in Japan, or if they just use freelance contemporary hitmen. I really doubt there is any point to having actual ninjas any more.

Yakuza still exist, but they have far less reach and relevance as a criminal operation than they did even a decade ago.
